Holly St James has featured on several Northern Soul LP’s and CD’s over the last three decades so that qualifies it as Northern Soul in my book. At venues I’ve attended in the last year, it’s gone down well with the dancers and packed the floor, especially with the younger crowd coming onto the scene.

The younger fans have brought an ‘up for anything’ attitude with them so dance to funkier stuff, crossover and RnB, you name it, they want to listen to it, dance to it and who knows, maybe buy it in some form or other. This can only be good for scene in the long run as us old fogeys stuck in a rut, shuffle from the dancefloor to the doctors’ waiting rooms...

I like to see folk in the venues making an effort to dress up for the occasion. I like to see youngsters carrying holdalls of clothes to change into - no objection to patches either... if it was good enough for us in the 70’s, it’s certainly OK in the ‘anything goes Teenies decade’ whether we’re talking about sons and daughters of Stafford goers, the grandchildren of Wheel/Torch/Catacombs attenders or anyone just dropping in for a look.

The scene continues to evolve so there’s no point in hankering after the golden days...the best times are right now and it’s up to soulies of all ages to make the most of them. The scene is becoming increasingly youthful, not just in Britain but across several continents, so the omens are good for the continued appreciation of the 57 varieties soulful music.

That's just my point BBAML, its actually quite gentile and polite at the moment, even though there are several contributors with diametrically opposed, and  strongly held, views. If I were to inject some of my thoughts, trust me, things would almost certainly escalate rather swiftly. Your original post was most definitely intriguing enough for me to initially want to put in my two pennorth, but I could see where it was going to end up even before it went there! Plus, the ORIGINAL point of the thread now appears to have been lost in the interminable debate surrounding what was played at Wigan. 

Besides, if I WERE to comment, where on earth would I even begin? Pop versus Soul? Good Pop versus shite Pop? White versus Black? White artists who had more soul in the little fingers than some black artists? Oldies and newies? Soul snobs versus those who just want to have a dance? Newcomers versus us old guard? Here is a couple of records, let's compare their relative merits/lack of. One is unarguably a 'proper' soul record by an ethnic ensemble, the other does not fall into that category. Both are huge records in the canon. Both are huge favourites of mine.

 

Joey Heatherton along with Bobby diamond from the same period are two Truly Fantastic 'proper' Northern Soul Tracks  that prove a record doesn't have to be 'Soul' or even Soulfull  to deserve a place on the Scene.

Tracks like Today's People or Babe Ruth, or VERY left-field stuff like the Crow or that Itchy & Scratchy Travis Wammack thing.  Again, whatever you think about any of these tracks and whatever genre you think they should be in. they have all deserved to be part of our VERY eclectic scene.

Case in point, my lass recently posted 'Autumn of your tomorrow' on one of the fb Northern soul groups, to be told she was 'an insult to the site'.

In fact that and other similar occurrences prompted me to make this thread!

It isn't the law that you have to like it, that is down to that subjective thing we call 'taste' or the lack of, but a couple of questions if you'll indulge me? Purely in the interests of research.

1) Why you need to tell us,

The guy in question actually owns the record, made me laugh! I've hated it since I first heard it in 1980 at Derby assembly rooms, that warbling vocal does my effing head in.

Just to add I've been a regular on the niter scene since 1978, always pretty much kept myself to myself. I travel 1000's of miles in the UK and Europe to support niters and weekenders. Not blowing my trumpet but it's been and still is a big part of my life. Pretty much been dismissive of the pop stomper sound (what ever you want to call it) since I got into the music in 1976. In a way it's a blessing that there are 2 (at least) scenes, one for the revivalists and another for those of us who prefer a more "grown up" environment. I'm not a snob but can't stand how some parts of the scene have been watered down...

I have said this before, but i will say it again. There is no way that all of us are going to like (or dislike)  the same records but it is the difference that keeps us going, the soul scene (with all it's records) is massive and as a wise man once said "you can please some of the people some of the time but you can't please all of the people all of the time".

Personally i love Peggy March (copy in my box), Babe Ruth (both U.S. and U.K. copies are in my boxes), The Crow (U.K. copy in my box), The Carstairs (in my box), Holly St. James (oh how i wish that i had a copy),Blanche Carter (bootleg only). But each to their own, there are some records that i'm not keen on but i don't moan about it, you buy what you like, you dance to what you like, but you should always respect what other people like.

Just my opinion of course, if your's is different that is fine with me. Respect.

Don't understand the 2 scene thing haven't any personal sense of a grown up scene and one for those of us who like these so called inferior records. The difference is I live and let live. Going Blackpool tower Friday all types played there and love st Ives and Newquay which are billed by soul on wax as rarer played soul. If this forum is a courtroom the dance floor is the judge and no amount of contempt by anybody will change that.

I guess I can be labelled as a returnee, I left the scene in late 76 when I joined the Army, though returned to a few local nights around the Peterborough area until 78 when visiting my parents.  I left the UK in 80 for two years in Japan and sought out vinyl where I could there, then onto New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, Hawaii, California (again collecting vinyl), Minnesota and finally Toronto (both collecting more vinyl) where I started a fairly regular commute to the 100 Club allnighters.  I have no dress sense, don't want one, I like what I like and I dance to what I like, even if it's not the way other people dance.  I used to have a beard down to my navel, which along with my full sleeves of tattoos doesn't fit the soulie image, but did I give a toss, did I Billy O, though the beard has been severely shortened for some years now.  I have an eclectic taste when it comes to soul, recalling some of the Wigan sounds in question, and must say I enjoy them once in a while as it brings back memories of mischief, but there are many, many (Commandant Eric Lassard) tracks out there, so I'm happy to hear them played out as long as it's just one or two in the course of several hours of soul music, though while I may not dance to them I'll happily have a pint of Guinness or go and take a potty break.

Hope this is in the spirit of the first post in terms of being approached by someone new to the scene , I remember being at an alldayer maybe 10 years ago on the South Coast. I’ve never been a “communal clapper “ when dancing but occasionally do that clap ( noiseless) behind the back that Soul folks used to do back in the day , picked up from groups like the Temps.

And I dress in a normal contemporary style so probably don’t fit the profile of what younger people think is a Soul fan.

Anyway a young woman came up to me and very seriously explained that I wasn’t clapping properly and then proceeded to show me how clapping should be done , I asked her to show me again , and then again. Priceless and the best laugh I’d had on the scene for quite some time , god bless her.

As someone who stopped listening to northern soul in 77, I have some sympathy with returners and loads of sympathy for those who've just discovered Soul Music, though I'm absotively, posilutely jealous of their age.

There's a big difference between someone who abandoned northern (or felt abandoned by it) for NYD, Funk and Jazz-Funk, which maybe led to Deep Soul, Real Jazz, Blues, Reggae and arriving on the Weekender Modern Scene with far better grounding than anybody who'd stuck around northern; and someone who got into punk-rock, two-tone, career, marriage, mortgage, kids, pop music and bringing their mid-life crisis back with them.

However, as someone who chooses to play some Northern Soul in amongst the rest, I'm routinely accused of putting on northern nights, which I roundly deny. As somebody who doesn't worship vinyls played by superstar Djs at 'legendary' venues, it's always difficult to persuade northern people that there's plenty there for them, and Soul Folk that it isn't about obscure vinyls.  

I understand there's some slippage as oldies disappear, and it's great that young'uns are turning up, but is it necessary to go back to the Twisted Wheel playlist, and do we think they'll still be around by the time we get up to Trafalgar, Fleetwood, Morecambe and Southport?

Jumped onto this topic late but having read through the posts I am now spitting feathers !!

As a regular attendee at various venues  (The Wheel , Brighouse etc etc) in Yorks and Lancs for many years I am growing increasingly fed up with what I call the 60s and 70s crowd looking down their noses at the younger Soulies (and by the way I am from the 60s and 70s era !).

I personally don't want to see the younger people driven out of venues by the constant playing of the top 500 usual suspects.

Bring on the modern soul and new stompers for me and lets Keep the Faith long into the future.

Without the younger generation the scene will be confined to history under the same chapter as the Dodo !

The young crowd are a very welcome addition and they are hugely passionate about the music.

Any issues are around people of any age/background saying negative stuff about other folks personal preferences.

I wouldnt slag off anybodys taste in music many of these lowest common denominator sounds are the entry point for a lot of  people and I hope they have as much fun with them as I did 40 odd years ago . 

Tastes evolve over the years allthough I love some of these sounds and the memories associated with them I really dont want to hear them when I go out .

What’s the problem if a DJ plays Frank Wilson rather than some obscure under played tune which almost always ‘empties the floor’

Why does it really matter if people who have plenty to say about records and scooters etc, actually have no idea what they are talking about.

However, if I was 17 I might disagree with the above.

These days I just get out on the floor and let the others get on with it.

However, telling someone else that their taste in music is 'shite-end of!' isn't something that I'm gonna ever do. If someone loves one I don't particularly get I just say 'Yeah man, it's a classic!'... I'm sticking with that approach.

It was something specific which prompted me to post about it, but I'll leave that buried now where it belongs.

The folks who try to BS me about going to WC etc, I leave the door wide open for them because I'm open about the fact that I never went there at all. My Mrs did though, hardly ever missed one in six years I've known her to tell people 'You went you Wigan, you stood in this spot and with so and so.'

Dean Carr plays it regular, St Ives, Newquay weekenders, probably plays it elsewhere too.

One of my faves, but then always been very in touch with my feminine side so I love this type of sound, it's why I get slated sometimes but I love every one of them!
