how do you value them? I can see what mine could be worth on discogs, is that a valid yardstick for insurance?

Mine are insured with Hiscox - they do specialist record collection cover in bands, up to 25K, 25 to 50K etc. Pretty reasonable but don't cover if you take them out of the house, might have to look at Newmoon next time around.

This is a particularly delicate issue. Does your regular home insurance cover record collections? Much depends on how valuable the collection is. If you are planning on taking records out of your house to DJ, there is a risk involved and this can be insured against. Ultimately, your best bet may be to burglar-proof and fireproof their storage.

Sad to say, the biggest risk to your record collection is allowing a fellow record collector to have access to your treasures.

Useful thread though, and thanks for the contact details above as I have had considerable difficulty sorting out insurance in the past.

I covered mine with 'home & legacy' as part of the home contents cover and it wasn't really any more expensive than my previous home contents (which wouldn't include the value of my records outside the house). I would say it is worth asking up front (before you have a loss!) as to what proof they would ask for as 'Home and legacy' suggested at least a complete log with all details and values (I do mine on excel) and ideally a photo of each record. Takes a lot of  time to do and then keep up to date but insurance companies are good at not paying out.

It would be interesting to know of anyone has any experience of actually making a claim for loss of records?

I've looked at the Newmoon website and their policy on vinyl insurance and they say quite specifically that the policy is not designed for DJs.
