honky
Hello, all - thought I'd provide a little "post game report" from my gig over the weekend, as several folks were interested in the scene in ReykjavÂk. It's been well over a year since since the last time I played there, and since then I gather that the main clubs in town have trended even further into techno / electro / italo / house, "all electronic beats all the time" territory. There is, as far as I know, no soul scene there at all, but I've found people are very enthusiastic about hearing new things. The club where I played, Sirkus, is probably my favorite club in the world - it's a very small place, probably about 150-200 capacity. It's a local place, a hangout for artists and musicians, and no matter what's going on there, there's always a positive energy that's tough to describe. I played from a bit before midnight until 3:15 or so when my friend Jon Atli took over - it was really great seeing people dancing to stuff that I know had never been played in Iceland before. My set was definitely not pure soul - Sirkus is usually very electronic-music-oriented, so I tried to change it up a bit, and did wander into funk, Bollywood, ska, mod, and a little Icelandic garage. Lots of people came up to tell me how pleased they were to hear something totally different... I'm hoping to set up a more regular "soul plus" night there, and will let folks know how it turns out. If you're curious, I've attached my setlist below.
