Diggin Dave 45s List - March 2019

Finally managed to complete a sales list after a couple of months of intense twin antics. As always it's an across the board list with some sought after records paired with some obscure, unknown stuff.

SHIPPING is €8 to anywhere in the world for any number of records from the list. Int'l signed for shipping is €14.

Full list with sound and photos can be found here: https://mailchi.mp/fc0e1254867d/1nc6s8682q-2290121

Johnny Guitar Watson – Wait a minute baby / So fine – Anchor 501

Popcorn R&B anthem that’s very sought after on the Highland label, but this first label press really is rare as hen’s teeth. A lot of collectors might not even be aware of its existence. Some marks on surface but plays strong.

Visual grade: VG

€600

Billy “Country Boy” Young – I’m in love Pt I/II – Joy-Ja 248

A late highlight from a career spanning from the doo-wop era to the disco times. Cool modern mover that has become very sought after lately.

Visual grade: VG+

€250

Vera Longus – Love looks so good on you / Again – Dery 2002

Completely unknown private synthy oddball disco stepper (or whatever you want to call it). In any case this has some hypnotic power that keeps drawing me back to playing it again.

Visual grade: Strong VG

€250

Jimmy Barnes – If by any chance / Maybe never – Sue 771

Super soulful mid-tempo popcorn. Nice clean copy.

Visual grade: EX

€250

Lela Martin – You can’t have your cake / Shy guy – Melatone 401

Sixties northern stomper in excellent condition.

Visual grade: EX

€250

Reunion – When the well runs dry / A brighter day – Reunion 8103-18A-2744

Funky modern dancer that’s still widely unknown although an alternate, slower version was comped by Tramp a couple of years ago. A really nice one to play out. Only letting this go cause it’s a spare.

Visual grade: EX

€250

James Reed – I wanna know / Tin pan alley – Rhythm 1775

Extremely rare 50s Bay Area blues 45. Never released on 78 rpm format

Visual grade: M-

€200

Lula Reed – Puddentane / I got a notion – Federal 45-12416

Classic R&B dancer. Very clean copy.

Visual grade: EX to M-

€160

The Singing Principal – Woman’s lib / Thank you baby – Flick 0050

Pre-#metoo funk 45 that was immortalized in Shadow and Cut Chemist’s Brainfreeze mix. Sweet soul flip plays with a bit of background noise.

Visual grade: VG+

€150

The Marvelows – Your little sister/ The shim sham – ABC-Paramount 45-10708

A staple on both the soul and popcorn scene and a record I’ve always had a soft spot for. Super clean copy.

Visual grade: M-

€150

The Avengers – Strange faces / Softly (I say to you) – American 101

Last release from this short-lived Bakersfield, CA outfit. Really cool psych influenced sound, moving away from the rawer garage stuff from earlier releases.

Visual grade: VG to VG+, warp NAP

€120

Alan Bruce – I feel better / Where do we go from here – Gait 1443

New York mid-tempo soul 45 on this rare pre-Garrison first press.

Visual grade: VG+

€100

Frank William’s Rocketeers – You got to be a man / The Spanish fly – Bra 2369

1967 Miami funk 45. A small quantity was pressed by Deep City on the Bra label to supply to the Islands market. Very few copies have surfaced since.

Visual grade: VG

€100

Quiet Fire – Lost (Without your love) / Your kind of love – Hit Machine 3977

Sweet 70s soul. Has a small but short warp which is slightly audible in the horn section during into. Plays perfectly after that.

Visual grade: Strong VG+, short warp

€80

Spencer Jackson Family – Bring back peace to the world Pt I/II – Scarab 002

Spiritual gospel mover with a great a cappella intro. Pristine copy.

Visual grade: M-

€80

Delores Ware – Strange / Falling in love – Sharon 501 DJ Copy

Often overlooked but cool New Breed R&B dancer. Some surface marks but a very strong pressing and plays well.

Visual grade: VG

€70

Joe Fossett – I remember / Happy birthday mama – Jar-Val 7801

Rare silky modern soul ballad. One of the more overlooked ones on the label.

Visual grade: EX

€70

Rhetta Hughes – You’re doing with her when it should be me / Gimme some of yours I’ll give you some of mine – Tetragrammaton 1505

Crossover monster with the trademark Mike Terry production.

Sweet cali ballad backed up with a mid-tempo popcorn mover.

Visual grade: M-

Maxine Harris – It’s a lonesome old town / Now or never – Major 101

True mid-tempo Belgian popcorn style back beat topped with a moody big voice. Beautiful record on the rare local release before R-Dell

Visual grade: VG-

€50

The Versitiles – Love me / Don’t go – Amaker 417

Nice one from 1962, stands on the crossroads between doo wop and deep soul. Not the cleanest copy but priced accordingly.
