Blues and Soul Mag - Wigan 7th Annv

Recommended Posts

Did Blues and soul magazine ever do a feature on the casino’s 7th anniversary ?

I know they did for all the others in the various anniversary issues between 74 and 79 but can’t find any mention of the 7th in 1980

Or was it deemed as all over and they didn’t bother !

Any ideas

Reading B&S in 1980 it would seem that Jazz Funk had taken over the Soul scene. Frank Elson's column was about the only feature to focus on Northern Soul and that was about to be split in two to highlight Jazz Funk events in the Midlands and North. The only reference to the Casino's 7th Anniversary comes as an after event review (of sorts) titled Wigan Casino - The Last Anniversary in Frank Elson's column in B&S 315. Even the club adverts are all promoting Jazz Funk events, even in Manchester.

Tempest - I had to add this

so you have Russ knocking out pressings being advertised - and RS asking for it to be curtailed in the same article 😂😂 - well it made me smile

Well spotted. A valid observation and criticism. Perhaps Russ was pushing for a more organised distribution system with Soussan at the source? Alternatively, the scourge of emidiscs was problematical enough to warrant criticism as DJ exclusives were being exposed. At the time though, most of us collectors didn’t mind as it was fine to have the best sounds in any format ie UK issue, US import, Soussan latest release etc. Maybe Russ was concerned that DJ’s were being deceived by some bootlegs and spinning them instead of originals?

I was more concerned that King Richard described the Casino as a Disco Venue...
