Historical amnesia....

Posted

I only got as far as the Wigans Ovation review, or was it David Bowie's cover of "Knock on wood"? I've forgotten already. And yes the internet is awash with mis-information and people re-writing history. Way too late to do anything about it now.....it is not going to change and will only get worse as the myths get perpetuated. For me it's about this. A real shame that far more people seem interested in some of these 'talking heads' (not all in the article fall into this category but some do), than are interested in the people who actually made the music in the first place.

I could not agree more, which is why since joining this site I have asked (and received so much help) in identifying artists and credits, labels etc. which is so much more important than "who played it first", unless someone, it seems, is maybe just trying to push their now ego to get false recognition.

It might be about tne music but it is also about a music scene. The scene has a history and one that shouldn’t be forgotten.  Those who have had an influence should receive some credit.  Lets be honest, if not for this scene, the crate diggers, dealers, the Djs and the dancers, much of the music would have been lost or forgotten.   I see very little pushing of an ego by those who have something to shout about.

Not to differ; to acknowledge someone else's credit is evidently important. I couldn't agree more.

But when Caesar crowned himself 'Emperor' ! Or Trump compliments himself a lot...

These are extremes but my point and others I believe lies there. But the OP started on 'historical amnesia'.

And a shout about as to have either a point, share one's enthusiasm for a record or to tell a tell tale around it; YES !

It is certainly true that many people who have "had an influence" don't have an overactive ego gland, but others are almost professionals at self publicity.

Again, they and it should, but only if it's true Karl, the scene only exists because of the music and there are still too many people asking "who played it first" or "what's it worth" as you know yourself. I was just pointing out the number one important thing is to credit the artist etc and then all the other fun and games can come after that as in "the order of things"

But the artist is credited and many I have corresponded with are eternally grateful as they rarely knew that their music was appreciated.  Johnathon Capree has had the recognition but this topic was highlighting inaccuracies in the fun and games that came after.

I can remember Mik Parry did a spot at the 100 Club and played it. Must be a good 12 years.

First heard Hamilton Movement at Kempton Rovers soul night - probably even earlier.
