Deliberately pitching gigs to clash with other local gig

That old chestnut is back - this time at Tamworth - Progressive club getting established with good mix of sounds and better than average attendances so other local promoters / DJ's see opportunity to ride on the back of a growing client base - when will they learn that the usual end result is both suffer when identical dates are planned and it's not as though the protaganist's don't know each other. Interesting to see how this one plays out.

It’s been going on for the last 45 years friend it’s a disgrace it’s worse now because their are a lot of watered down cheap sake Soul nights everywhere, the scene today is becoming a parody of what it used to be, It’s bad enough for seasoned Soulies but what chance would new people on the scene have to progress they wouldn’t have a clue what was the way forward unless they are the type which aren’t looking for the real thing and it seems like there are a good few of them.

It's a ' free for all' now Steve - Pretty much gone are the days when promoters respectfully called up one other to discuss booking dates so not to encroach on each other's events, which was done for the obvious reasons you give (everyone suffers), and for the general health of the scene.

Clashes did happen, but these were kept to the absolute minimum, and usually because of for want of trying, no one fell out over it happening every so often.

Good luck to all promoters - You need a bit of that nowadays

My 2 cents; the world has change (wrong word (since no revolution have occurred) but it's the lingual formula for 'evolve' in such phrase/context) and the number of venues capable to host such (cheap) events are on every street corner. Where some decades ago it took an organization to host, finance, promote and get the 'DJ's' with the (right) records, mind and body to bring and entertain the crowd. All that is not required by some (cheapskates) anymore.  Everything now is only few 'clicks' away...

My 1 cent; to tell appart: there use to be the scenes before the splits/schisms between the trendies (mods, skinheads, scooterists, rockers and what have youZ) and the records chasers. For the trendies, music was only one of the many artifact to own for (wanna) being what they were/are. For the records chasers music matters on it's own. Understandingly the trendies from today shan't shy to step on anybody's toe daring to have at least an arrogant stand compensating for all the rest they're evidently lacking.

Hi Steve unfortunately this is what's wrong with the scene now. Too many wannabee dj's playing boots of overplayed oldies, and little respect for promoters who have served their time, and invest money trying to keep it fresh. Just look at Notts more venues that you can wave a stick at. Only two I'd attend  probably same as you.
