What are the best modern soul tracks

Recommended Posts

Posted

I’ve been dipping my toe into the modern soul pond a bit more recently and would be interested in hearing what others consider to be the cream of the crop.

I know it is quite a broad description but in general I’ve been listening to late 70’s early 80’s releases, although as with everything there are always exceptions

Album tracks also seem to be much more of feature

I’ll be looking forward to listening to any recommendations

Cheers, Andy

I recently did two sets for the Bury Virtual Nighter of 70s and 80s and most won't cost the earth. Mainly from Lps too. Bobby Thurston - The Very Last Drop Michael Wycoff - Looking Up To Y

Very cheap & not played out to the best of my knowledge

Just a few random ones from me digging through my YT music playlist....  I will start with my favourite Randy Brown track while we are on that theme....  My no1 all time

Hopefully Mark will compile a list of the most sought after 'modern' tracks to go alongside the list he published the other day ...

I will add though that I was hoping for suggestions which might be more within my grasp price wise. Can’t imagi the wife would be too on board with me lashing out thousands of pounds at a time

Here's 5 to start that won't break the bank -

True Image - Different Kind Of Love

Love Committee - I Made A Mistake

Barrett Strong - Love Is You

Margie Evans - You Are To Me

Liquid Blue - Take It Anyway You Want To

No need to spend big sums, just enjoy!!

Cheers, Steve

Goldmine / Soul Supply did a great modern soul series back in the 90s. 6 CDs full of classics. Either get the CDs or go through the listings and see if they are on Youtube for reference. As a collection i think these are the best compilations in this genre.

Hi Stephen

A couple there I didn't know, I like the spinners, I'll get myself one of those I think.

As for the Lenny Williams, not heard that before but its not dissimilar to a lot of the early house stuff I like so a nice connection there

cheers, Andy

Black Nasty - I Have No Choice

Barbara Mason - The World Is In Crisis

Impressions - Potent Love

Best of Both Worlds - Lost In A Shuffle Of Love

Betty Wright - Keep Feeling

Again, nothing too costly but quality all the way (in my opinion!!)

Isn’t it! Not sure if it was meant to appeal to patriotic young Americans at the tail end of the Vietnam war. Obviously didn’t work as I suspect they didn’t sell many!

Here we go then, it’s like antiques roadshow, I haven’t cheated, I’ve not even asked Fiona Bruce what she thinks but I’m guessing the following

Cheapest - Sidney Joe Qualls

Middle - Marcia Hines

Most Expensive - Harry Deal

Regardless of price, from the 3 I would pick Marcia Hines all day long
