This is a happy one - pity he turned out to be even more of an evil bastard than David Ruffin...

I recently did two sets for the Bury Virtual Nighter of 70s and 80s and most won't cost the earth. Mainly from Lps too. Bobby Thurston - The Very Last Drop Michael Wycoff - Looking Up To Y

Very cheap & not played out to the best of my knowledge

Just a few random ones from me digging through my YT music playlist....  I will start with my favourite Randy Brown track while we are on that theme....  My no1 all time

The Randy Brown song is an amazing uplifting track. Those opening bars give a perfect hint of what follows.

The randy brown LP is fantastic was listening to that last week.

without referring a single track I’ve got some soul cellar shows on CD which is an old radio show by Paul collins from solar radio.  So many great modern tracks feature on those shows and I learnt a lot listening to them.

Some of my favs here, especially  Prince Phillip and Willie Hutch, though I'd always considered the latter as a top Jazz/Funk tune rather than Modern.  Either way I love it.

Here we go then, it’s like antiques roadshow, I haven’t cheated, I’ve not even asked Fiona Bruce what she thinks but I’m guessing the following

Cheapest - Sidney Joe Qualls

Middle - Marcia Hines

Most Expensive - Harry Deal

Regardless of price, from the 3 I would pick Marcia Hines all day long

Have I missed something, Harry deal modern?😳

My abiding memory of you Russ is you playing, ' going through the motions' at Bidds, not know for it's modern😁 but everyone was dancing, including you behind the decks. That's the kind of modern that will get me on the floor everytime.

Back in the day (80s), we used to categorise 'generally' into Northern, Modern and most newer stuff all bundled together as jazz-Funk.

Seems much more categorised nowadays and I think Willie Hutch would be classified as 'Boogie'? Jazz Funk now seems to be a more specific genre (eg Expansions)

But I may be wrong....been away from the scene for a long time!

Im not too bothered about genre..... Just like what I like.

👍

Great thread, couple of favorites form me that should be in contention:

West Wing - I'm Gonna Love You (Just a Little More Baby) Barry white Brilliance:_)
Al Johnson - baby I'm back for More, Love / have all versions of this this song, but recently into Al Johnson's.
JJ barnes - Cant See myself Leaving You - the whole Lp really 🙂
Mike James Kirkland - Doin it Right and Where's the Soul of a Man from separate LP's, he is something else!
and I'm a massive fan of Dianne Reeves, especially 'Welcome to my Love'..
