Gerry Marsden, singer of You'll Never Walk Alone, dies aged 78.

Shame tomorrow’s game is not at home and in front of a full house to give him the sending off he deserves.

RIP Gerry , for not just that anthem for LFC but for all the happy times you gave to many ... he always had time to give and a smile on his face .

RIP Gerry. By the sounds of it, died after a very short illness.  Although him and his band made several records, ALONE will always be synonymous with them. It certainly has some history..

RIP Gerry you left us with a host of memories.

Saw him many times at a host of local supper clubs, we would move across from the adjacent disco to watch Gerry and everyone in the club ended up standing on chairs and tables singing YNWA at the show finale.

Was also privileged to be in the Ataturk stadium at the champions league final 2005 to participate in the loudest and most moving rendition of YNWA ever at halftime and boy did it work!!!

"You'll Never Walk Alone" is a show tune from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel. In the second act of the musical, Nettie Fowler, the cousin of the protagonist Julie Jordan, sings "You'll Never Walk Alone" to comfort and encourage Julie when her husband, Billy Bigelow, the male lead, falls on his knife and dies after a failed robbery attempt. It is reprised in the final scene to encourage a graduation class of which Louise (Billy and Julie's daughter) is a member. The now invisible Billy, who has been granted the chance to return to Earth for one day in order to redeem himself, watches the ceremony and is able to silently motivate the unhappy Louise to join in the song.

And one of my favourites ... good shout.

And written by him and his brother and famously covered by  José Feliciano (1968) and then again by Rickie Lee Jones (1989)

Great tune

Great tune

And there is a great version by Louise Cordet on Decca too, released in 1964,before Gerry released it himself..

I heard an alternative version of NEVER at Old Trafford a few times....something about signing on...

All publicity etc.

It must have been incredible in the 60s with all those beat bands in the charts. No wonder they were swinging.
