Fights At Soul Do's

Went to Denton on Friday last with a couple of mates....excellent....but cos one of the guys said he'd always wanted to go to the Twisted Wheel (new to the scene) we left Denton around midnight.

Anyway the Wheel was packed. Great atmosphere and some great (if not same as last time) tunes.

Right at the death me and me mate are on the dance floor to the Wheel's regular ender Soothe Me. I'd told him about the clapping bit in the middle and how it would have the place 'fizzing' and so on.

I'm dancing right next to this 'man mountian' of a fella when just before that clapping bit this guy really forceably pushes this other bloke to the floor!!!!!

Don't know what the second guy had done but the big fella was fuming and ready to follow in!

Full of drink and 'dutch courage' I (along with a few other punters) put myself infront of said 'mountain' telling him it wasn't worth it, don't spoil your night etc.

Anyway luckily he left it and even more luckily he didn't belt me!!!

F**king spoiled a belting 'ender' for me though!!

Can't remember the last time I saw a fight at a soul do.

Anyone else seen any trouble at their do lately?

KTF.

Hi Drew .....

Not seen any trouble lately , but " During the War " ......

This ties in with a thread from several days ago , regarding Mexborough .

I ran a monthly friday night in 1979 at the now closed Civic Hall in the said town . It was a good night ( usually 150 - 200 in ) Usually , the night went off without any problems ..... until one memorable night .

The time was 11.15 PM , and we were later than usual closing the doors ( 11 PM ) . In came two peed up locals , who wished to join in the revellry . When they were told that they could not come in , they decided to re-enact a scene from a western film , by grabbing and throwing the chairs that were near to the door into the dancing masses .

Chaos reigned for a couple of minutes until they were evicted - e.g. they had the s**t kicked out of them by several of the people inside . After the melee had subsided , dancing resumed as if nothing happened .....

One of the worst fights I err was around was at THE MECCA in the early 70's when a load of piss heads kicked off and a mate of mine knifed a guy in the neck.......very vicious but some consolation was that my mate only used a 1inch blade......still very very naughty......

I would be barred from here if I was to reveal any more things

 err Rod......dont be telling everyone mate....

Forgot about this one ....

When we went to The Mecca , we usually took a break from the HR , and went downstairs to partake in a jotty and do a bit of normal watching .

One notable saturday while down there , a fight broke out at the bar we were near , and glasses went flying in all directions .

One of them - a dimpled pint mug ( still the only way in my opinion to savour a beverage ) came hurtling at speed ( no pun intended ) towards me , and thankfully ( thankfully ? ) fell several feet short , but bounced on the carpet , hitting me under my right kneecap , polaxing me to the floor in a sh***y heap .......

I still maintain that this is the reason why I now suffer from arthritis in the sodding thing .

I remember coming off the Southport train and all the piss heads waiting 4 us going to the casino

anyway

I happened to be in some very handy company and many a time they were well smacked and on one occasion without thinking I reacted by throwing a smack at someone forgetting I had hold of my uk rare sales box in my hand and just as I was about to connect this Lady ahum with us screamed out and grabbed my records in time.

Also one night again the piss heads were there loads of them, there was only 3 of us at the time anyway we had a go but had to leg it and I will never ever forget it when as we got to the casino a load of North Wales finest that we knew ran over to do the buisness.......

most of these piss-heads, town gooks etc, used to take on all-nighter goers under the impression that they were dealing with jessies 'cos we danced 'alone' and wore trousers that looked like long skirts from a distance. I have to say that some of the shadiest characters I've met in my life came from our own ranks. the wholesome picture of cosy brotherhood that is sometimes painted these days is laughable. me & my mate used to drive over to nottingham & pick up the coach to wigan from the brit. I remember one night certain people quaking at the talk of 'shooters' being on board. how heavy can you get? the towns gooks were pussycats alongside this lot.

having said that, I don't recall any major incidents at all-nighters in all the years I went, save the 79-81 period when revivalist skins came on board. that was a dark period for me. I began to question the whole thing.

This is something I feel strongly about as it has always been my proud boast to "non-soul fans" that I NEVER saw a fight, or even a scuffle, at a Soul do in all my years on the scene (there must have been SOME, I dare say, but I never encountered any personally). That's what made the Soul scene so particularly special in my eyes. Remember many times seeing chaps accidently career into bystanders or other dancers during a particularly daring dancefloor maneuver, only to appologise and everyone shake hands with no hard feelings. (Let's keep it that way!) Very impressive compared to your run-of-the mill pop disco, where drunken fights were (and probably still are) very much the the norm. As for scrapping with divs and other undesirables in self defence, that's another matter entirely! (I actually got "glassed" at one local pop disco back in '74, and still made it up to Wigan two days later...but that's another story...):wicked:

I don't remember that much trouble but I do recall a fight just outside the record bar at Wigan around 1974 when one slighty older guy knocked seven bells out of two younger guys in bowling shirts. He was shouting something about "don't ever rip me off again" or words to that effect leaving the younger guys to crawl slowly away under the nearest table. Records or drugs? We'll never know, but I did get the feeling that the young guys thought they were hotshots and maybe picked on the wrong person.

All the best

I've seen 1 fight in about 20 years. It was at a nighter in Coventry in about 1989. There was a rave going on upstairs and a stream of weirdo's in day glo underpants and glo sticks walking past the entrance. The dancefloor was concrete and then some bloke laid into another bloke. Worst nighter I have been to and we turned round and went home.

In the big room at Wigan one night - wasn't that busy if I remember, might have been a saturday after an oldies - I saw a bloke get beat up by two lads out side the gents toilets, he got up, grabbed a chair and threw it after them, almost in slow motion it bounced, headed in a different direction and went straight into the head of some poor girl who was sitting at a table at the edge of the dancefloor.

Also after Brownie from Blackburn died, the lad who was involved somehow was carried out of the Casino on a stretcher, though he knew that was going to happen to him so he was brave to turn up in the first place.

Seen a few offs outside nighters but none inside, hope it stays that way

I went to that nighter, it was at the Eclipse club. Upstairs was an Amnesia House promotion with downstairs the likes of Butch Djing (I could be wrong). Funny as F%4k as I posted last year, a gurning goon wobbling / skipping across the dancefloor with Kel Osbourne playing in the back ground.

I remember Kerso, myself and a few others spent half the night in the rave shades.gifwicked.gif

Missed the brawl though

I was there too mate and it was a weird one. Concrete dancefloor and booming bass from upstairs. A few of them dropped in though and were quite interested. Wonder if any of them converted?

Seen a few scraps outside 'nighters, a couple at Wigan I remember getting off the train after a Wigan Vs Warrington rugby match - mayhem.

The worst I remember was outside the 100 Club when bouncers piled in to some guy for no apparent reason. One of them drew a flick knife but thought better of it and put it away. Heaven knows what that was about.

Thankfully it's rare and I've never known it to happen inside.

Another time when at the Casino in the early 70's

I was sat with 2 chicks from manchester that I knew and both were ex-wheel goers

we were sat by the Ladies toilets upstairs when one of them followed someone into the toilets.......

I asked her mate what was going on as just before the girl walked in the toilet she opened her handbag to reveal a small knife inside.....

The other one told me that she had followed 2 drug squad officers in........

Now I dont know what happened in there and still dont to this day but we went straight downstairs on her way out of the toilets........

I've seen a couple of people 'escorted' out of the Marrs Bar and at the Dome there was always some tension when a few civilians turned up and danced with drinks but the only real fight i've seen was at Samanthas a while back between two women, pulling hair, the lot, on the dancefloor... ohmy.gif After they'd been separated they still managed to find each other for round two.

At Wigan we usually had to run up Station Road chased by skinheads before reaching the sanctuary of the queue.

I don't like fights at soul dos, but i'm proud to hear of accounts where soulies 'defend the dancefloor' against the locals. thumbsup.gif

Remember run-ins outside Fleet P'boro early '80's. In particular a beer barrel getting launched at the queue once?

Also have memories of post-niter ambush in Loughborough one Sunday afternoon early '80s. A few of us were meandering back to the flat after a post Niter lunchtime session in the pub - when a car pulled up and a gang of lads jumped out with pool cues... We all legged it but think a couple of our group got caught...This was all due to love interest in one of our Niter lasses by a local meathead.

Others I remember hyperventilating after safe exit were Jamie Saul (Rip), Ady Connolly, Rob Tipper (all Derby), Gary Baker/Lowey (Stoke)

Somewhere on tape I have a record of a scuffle at Wigan in 74. A guy can be heard saying "right then". You here a kerfuffle and then he says "now f... off before I really start". I didn't actually see it as I was looking through the boxes, but apparently he was a bit handy!

Also at the Mecca from 72 to 74, the Burnley - Blackpool football rivalry used to surface at times. We had one mega punch up just outside the Highland Room with some yobs from downstairs. Bez (Steve Berry) knocked one of 'em out with one punch.

Happy days spent defending the faith!

i remember on the train from manchester to wigan....some biker boys started and a fight broke out , went on for a bit then the comms cord was pulled as the bikers were getting a slapping, they escaped off the train and began to throw bricks at the train windows breaking some ! the train pulled off and waiting at wigan station the police with dogs etc (searched yet again smile.gif )

could never understand 4 or 5 punks wanting to kick off against a huge mass of soulies outside wigan ???

and Mexbrough was the scene of many fights, sad to say me included...was jumped by two after we decided to leave early cos we could see what was coming, both fueled on beer they were easy to sort but the month after someone got an eye damaged with a glass....mexbrough was the place of highest unemployment in the country at the time, not an excuse to be honest!
