Scotts On Swingers - How Rare

Hi All,

There’s been a number of threads recently about how JM’s auction records are not that rare, but coming up is Edwin Start’s Scott’s On Swingers 

I’ve checked previous posts on here about the track, but most have been sales & added to that Mr Jeffries sold one recently for around £800 & a well known DJ has one for sale on Discogs at £1k, so I have an idea of price.

My point is: surely this must be mega rare? It was effectively an extended jingle for Scot Regan so you’d imagine that other DJs wouldn’t play it meaning it had a very small target market & hence a small production run.

Does anyone know if this is the case or am I way off the mark?

It's rare. That is certain. But not that rare IME. All Ric-Tic promos are not 'evenly' rare. Never worth £400+ IMO. A nice collector's piece all the same. But the nowadays "northern soul" prices are another subject or debate if you wlll. More than ever before I mean. FWIW I've seen more Edwin's Scotts than Rose Batiste promo for example.

As for the music in it it's only a less punchier version of 'stop her on sight' with private joke lyrics. The collector's demand would be rather limited with Detroit completists (most must own it by now) and the few Edwin Starr's fans (?!). And few northern soul collectors evidently. But is it also a new "entry" in the TOP 500 to proudly splash one's money on ?

It's an odd one ... you would have thought that as this was done specifically for Scott Regan the number they pressed would have been really low ... you wouldn't imagine that other Radio DJs would play a song promoting another DJ or Radio Station ... but I recall seeing it a lot in the late 70s for less than £10

Makes you wonder why Ric Tic didn't just cut a few acetates for Scott for his own personal play

Totally agree Andy. Plenty for sale at the Casino,  infact I vaguely remember buying one for about £ 6 or £7 in 77 / 78 .

When the 200 copies are desired by the 2000 collectors...so to speak, up goes the value.

Not rare at Cleethorpes WG record bar, and often seen as a tongue in cheek tune.

Dennis Dell, Spookie and Sue, type of thing.

No different to sooooullll in the sun in my opinion Tommy Hunt.

On the other hand Stop her on sight is superb, if overplayed.

It's a track I'd like have, it'd be good to have a track (S.O.S.) that I remember from Saturday mornings at the Top Rank that doesn't offend the ears of the people in the know, but at £1k I couldn't justify it & losing at recent JM auctions the Discogs offering could be a bargain by comparison

I think I purchased mine at a St Ives niter ... maybe 78 for about £6 ... put it up for sale about 10 years ago, via a dealer, for  around £80 but nobody was interested ... he also didn't have any takers for my George Hobson or Delegates Of Soul so they are still here ........... thankfully

Would like it . Den always plsys in Man Cave when i visit . Though its not a Grand Record . Would imagine 500 Tops . Paying 500 for Billy Hambric . One rate higher . All down personal preference . Though getting back to rareity . I don't believe it is . Though would be rare for someone pay grand for it .

As previously mentioned, it seemed there were a few about in 77/8 and was offered a copy for £8 at Yate, but didn't take up the offer......Alas as a Ric-Tic completist, picked a copy up around 10 years ago.....for a bit more than £8, and a lot less than "mega-bucks" !

There was a very small run of single sided white dj copies and they are very scarce.

Yes and the Single Sided were a Radio Competition give away or something of that nature if memory serves. 

The Single Sided also with Stamped Matrix and as far as I recall only 50 made.

I have the Double Sided Promo bought in the 70's from Soul Bowl.

I have had  3 of these in the past,all in mint- condition as mentioned previously a tongue in cheek tune and usually clears the floor,all sold around 15 years ago at 300,the last one was signed by the great man himself at his performance at the ritz in manchester which i sold as mentioned for 300 then edwin passes away a week later only to see it shoot up to 400-450 which in today's obscene market i would value at between 500-600 never a grand its a rare tune but there are more rarer tunes out there going for the same money and fill a floor just my own personal opinion........

signed mint demo here , wouldn,t sell it for anywhere near 500/600...there again i have his uk polydor red and white demo signed by the man,  as well as his awesome agent double o soul signed,,,some things really are holy grail to us collectors.

No idea Col,he appeared from nowhere just as my mate was taking the photo. It was back in 2001,JJ Barnes was on the same night in Birmingham.

Can confirm there were quite a few around in the 70s , At that point in time I had a complete run of the Ric Tic label and didnt consider  Scotts on Swingers  to be by any means the rarest , I got mine from Chris Savory( who had several mint copies ) for around 5 or 6 quid , also, at the same time  from him Fantastic 4   Cant stop looking for my baby for £15.00, which was a lot at the time , but not many copies seemed to be about at that time .

Steve.... George  ( Stanley  ) is both and actually very good at both . If you didn't know already.
