i know a lot is attributed to WC that never was...but has/did anyone hear the Bee Gee's Jive Talkin' played in 1975 at WC -as an acetate?

(probably unknown as The Bee Gee's)

Winstanley / Richard and Roberts are still alive - am sure with a bit of perseverance they could be contacted and asked - do you remember 🤔

don't forget after their late 60's success The Bee Gee's had been in the doldrums (almost untouchable by the Record Co's). So although we immediately think Night Fever now, it didn't exist then.

Nobody would have been running around saying 'that's the Bee Gee's' isn't it.

Therefore you may hardly have give it a notice, put 2+2 together, thought twice, missed it, if it did get a debut in 1975...even for a moment.

maybe the way the demo was released played a part?

'Upon its release to radio stations, the single was delivered in a plain white cover, with no immediate indication of what the song's name was or who sang it.'

I remember Makes You Blind along with I'm on Fire both being played at our local disco and treating them as ok to dance to, but I don't think I heard either at Wigan. Mind you with Joe 90 getting air time I'd fully expect those two to have done as well, even if only briefly before everyone moved on.

I'm on fire instrumental was definitely played briefly until it hit the charts.

Damn , I wanted to be the first, but Nev (RIP) was my hero when I was young, so that is brilliant, thanks for making me smile and bringing a tear as well

I guess any scene has moments when it just steps out to have some fun and laugh at itself. Not sure that was fun but they seemed to be enjoying it....

a good friend sent me this.

Now then...unless you heard it, and knew who it was (at the time) then it doesn't prove it was spun, BUT it does prove it was thought about.

If you were the DJ, would you put your hand up to playing it?

Hi Ken

I would be on top of Big Ben  shouting not guilty it was the Snake that made me do it.

I heard it was Robert Stigwood who came to Wigan , liked what he saw (working class kids living for the weekend) but decided to give it a stateside setting. Makes more sense as Stigwood was a U.K resident.

Wrt Jive Talkin’, Not sure I get this? Jive Talkin’ was 1975, and Saturday Night Fever was 1978. It may well be Stig visited WC (although I doubt it).

the below gives a different take 😉

(memory says there's a fair few more detailed articles on this origin story and the author online  )

Source material

Norman Wexler's screenplay was adapted from a 1976 New York magazine article by British writer Nik Cohn, "Tribal Rites of the New Saturday Night". Although presented as an account of factual reporting, Cohn acknowledged in the mid-1990s that he fabricated most of the article.

A newcomer to the United States and a stranger to the disco lifestyle, Cohn was unable to make any sense of the subculture he had been assigned to write about; instead, the character who became Tony Manero was based on an English mod acquaintance of Cohn.

I'm still sure I heard talk of it being played. Not sure if it was just a bullshite whisper that got blown up to a passed around story in the way that can happen. It doesn't need to have been at one of the nighters either.....I think the casino also had those mid-week things as well....although I never got to one.

Just fake news. Somebody alleging they’ve done something, then linking that to a load of utter tosh as there never was any demand for Bee Gees songs on the northern soul scene, let alone at The Casino. Totally laughable. Just who was the faker who wrote this garbage?

you may be correct. I agree the Bee Gee's songs prior to Jive Talkin' were not in demand anywhere really between 1971'ish-1975. But can you be sure 'as an acetate of an unknown group' this didn't get played?

Don't forget...anything goes now at across the board nights...can we really criticise any "went" back in the day?
