theres an article and listing in the March 83 edition of Record Collector......dunno how complete it is.......let me know if you want a scan........ smile.gif

Thanks Sean and Jim,

I'd really appreciate a list or a scan of the article (please send to info@millbrand.com)

It's nothing urgent, I just wondered how many 45s they issued. It's difficult because Mojo and other Polydor labels shared a group catalogue numbering system.

I have about eighty Mojo 45s and I can think of a further twenty or so. No doubt there are more.

Best regards,

Paul Mooney

It seems they issued 105 singles on Mojo, lots of great soul and funk. I'm about 20 singles missing so if anyone has any unwanted or duplicate Mojo 45s please let me know.

Couple of corrections that may help.

2011-083 :

Chee Chee & Peppy - I Know I'm In Love / My Love Will Never Fade Away

this was issued in 1971 on UK BUDDAH # 2011-083 1 not Mojo

and according to my old data

2001115 : JBs - These Are The JBs (Part 1) / (Part 2) was issued on Polydor not Mojo

this maybe wrong, if anyone has a Mojo copy on # 2001115 could I get a scan.

I have it in stock on the Mojo 2001155

Mojo series 2092 #s -043 - 051 - 061 I think were unissued

Hope this helps

Thanks a lot, John.

That accounts for two I wasn't sure about.

The Freddie North single was issued, I have a copy on 2092-043.

Great Record too (I Did The Woman Wrong). A Southern beater... just how I like 'em!

Blinding label, Mojo, with quite a few hidden and underplayed Gems on there.

Jean Battle, Joe Simon "Let Me Be The One", Millie Jackson "Ask Me What You Want" etc.

Yes, lots of gems there, Sean.

I was fifteen when most of the Mojo singles were issued ...so it was a label bought with school dinner tickets!

It's very easy to take these things for granted and even easier to forget that these singles are now thirty-five years old.

I recently replaced quite a few worn copies.

Presumably they just slotted it direct into the Polydor numbering system instead of giving the series it's own.

Bad marketing and the lazy option i.m.h.o.

Thanks for that, looking at the scans, I picked these up from Rotherham Market in the 70's alongside various other DEMO's.

Mojo_2092-055a.jpgMojo_2092-056a.jpg

Polydor didn't issue many Custom DEMO's, I guess this is also as far as they got regarding a Mojo DEMO.

They could have made a lot more of this brilliant label and given us more to collect, White DEMO etc shades.gif

Hi Roger,

When was that then?

I ran the Record stall on Rotherham Market, in the 70's.... from 74 until 78.

Prior to that, the guy who had the plot had all his Soul stuff (UK & US) priced at 35p.

I soon put that straight though. So if you paid more than 35p they will have come from me!

Hi Sean

It was the early 70's, trying to remember.

I bought "Seven Days Too Long" on Big T & Competition Ain't Nothing" on Action - from a Stall in the Market, they also had a shop in the town.

What I can remember is I arrived at the old Rotherham Station, and walked into town.

Can't be far I remember thinking, WRONG

Our paths will have crossed I'm sure, I used to go through to Rotherham, Sheffield (Violet Mays) etc

That was it Roger.

The stall (and Shop) were "The Sound Of Music" (cute huh!).

Dread to think of all that stuff that went through my fingers for 50p! :P .

Hence, I had my famous standing order for virtually every UK Soul release at that time.

Left me broke... but happy!

Violet Mays... now that was some place too.

I bought almost the entire Action collection off the old gal... for less than ten bob each... and loads of other luvverly British.

Picked up Johnny Baker "Shy Guy" for 20p long before it got played (mecca) out of Violets too!

Mate, they wouldn't believe you if you told 'em!

Where you from then? Donny?

Be a Boylans lad as well then, I'll wager?

Hi Sean

Yes, I am from Donny. I used to go to Boylans in the early days

I was there quite a few times in a week.

Used to travel through to Conisborough on my Lambretta, Happy Days. :shades:

Violet Mays, you're right about the stuff they had in that shop, Amazing.

I used to play records at "The Drum" in Bentley.

Great thread btw, I'm fortunate to have most of the releases. As the roots omy soul 45's collection are all on UK releases.I also collect UK labels. The MOJO label was /is collectable and was A&R'd at the time by John Abbey, the founder of Blues & Soul. John also went on to start another UK Black label Contempo.

Hello Bob,

Let's declare next week CONTEMPO WEEK. I've probably had more 45s on Contempo than any other UK label. They were very prolific and often very brave.

And it takes me back to my teenage years. Maybe that's why those records are extra special.

P.S. Does anyone know any record dealers who accept school dinner tickets???

On the Subject of DEMO's, around the same time I picked this one up.

M-G-M_Promo_A.jpgM-G-M_Promo_B.jpg

There isn't a release number on this one, It appears to be promoting her Album "Never Can Say Goodbye",

However, I figure If this exists, were any other Phonogram Soul releases treated to the same Luxury as a DEMO.

Yes I'd like to see a Mojo album listing too .I've found it difficult to find many Mojo albums , the " Workin " compilation was my introduction to Soul music , great set with Northern and Funk side by side , took me ages to find a clean copy .Best ,Eddie

The 'Workin' compilation was my introduction to the wonderful "Maybe" from the 3 Degrees, Eddie!

A superbly compiled album.

Agree a Mojo LP list would be useful!

It's a bit better than just placing a sticker on the label.

I've got this as a promo:

JAMES, ETTACHESS9DJOUT ON THE STREETS AGAIN / COME A LITTLE CLOSER

and there were 2 Janus and 2 4 track Polydor promos too:

VARIOUSPHONOGRAM1DJSYMPATHY - DIANE DAVIDSON / GRITS AIN'T GROCERIES - LITTLE MILTON / DO ME RIGHT - DENISE LASALLEVARIOUSPHONOGRAM6DJSUZIE Q - DALE HAWKINS / MONEY - DON COVAY / LONG LIVE THE KING - DETROIT EMERALDS / DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH MYSELF - CISSY HOUSTONVARIOUSPOLYDOR2DJMORE HUNKS OF FUNK EP - Gloria Gaynor/Irene Chanter/Millie Jackson/Esther PhillipsVARIOUSPOLYDOR2816011DJ4 HUNKS OF FUNK E.P. Sorry don't have the tracks to hand for this one.

Yes you're right about that, in fact I only recently got a good copy of the "Workin" compilation myself, a few months ago! (I didn't buy it new, as I had many of the tracks on 45 at the time). It's hard to find them in good condition these days.

Incidently, I also found a nice Ike & Tina Turner/Ikettes compilation on Mojo ("Peaches") on a local market which I'd also missed. Includes many of their hits plus "Peaches And Cream", "I'm So Thankful" etc. from the Ikettes.

The Mojo and Jay Boy labels have tremendous nostalgia appeal to "our generation" don't they? - even if we were somewhat complacent about them back then. It's just nice to have 'em I reckon! Great looking label of course...

As an accompaniment to this theme, you all might want to read this article on the 'MOJO' in Wikipedia. (Cheaper than viagra, huh!?) laugh.gif

One of my favourite double siders on Mojo is Art Gentry - Wonderful Dream / Breakthrough , the top side is a great version of a superb George [ Bart ] Jackson song on Decca , whilst Breakthrough is a wonderful crossover styled outing .Best ,Eddie

I'm particulary fond of Jean Battle - "When A Woman Loves A Man" (great Sam Dees) and Oscar Weathers' "You Wants To Play" which both have prime places in my 'Fave Ballads Box'!

Dennis Hay posted this scan to Facebook, It has the same cat number as the Mojo Release, 2092 001. We've ruled it out as an Irish pressing as it doesn't have the Polydor numbering used for the rest of their Irish catalogue, And South Africa which released it as ATS 552.  Was it a UK released which was pulled when John Abbot and Contempo suggested Mojo as a dedicated soul label. Or is from another country which was pressing 4 prong centres?

Frank,

This looks to me like an East or West African release (eg, Kenya, Nigeria, Rhodesia etc).
