The True 'rarest Of The Rare'

Recommended Posts

Thios is a spin-off from the frank Wilson topic... I'm just curious of what the real rare records are?? I'll start off with a few I know, maybe you folks can elaborate

The Inspirations on Breakthrough - 1 copy to my knowlege

The CODs on Kellmac (She's fire) - 1 copy

Blue Sharks "These things will keep me loving you" - Only 1 copy known in the past 20 years, one turned up on eBay a while back, whether or not it was the same one I don't know.

Frank Beverly on Rouser - 2 copies

Milton James "My lonely feeling" - 2 copies

Kell Osborne "Law agains a heartbreaker" - 2 copies

Mello Souls - 3 copies

Richard Lackey "Love shopping" - 3 according to Manship

Don Gardner "Cheating kind" - 3 copies

+ other super-rare stuff, sure there are only a handful of stuff like William Powell, Inticers, Eric mercury, JD Bryant, Don Gardner, etc. etc., and I'm sure the list goes on and on, but I'm going to stop now.

Can anyone help populate the list? :sleep3:

Think you will find there are more than 3 copies of "Cheatin' Kind". William Powell only 3(?) known copies.

Adey Pierce told me that he remembers John Anderson having

a 25X box of Don Gardner "Cheatin' Kind" in the early 80s. Def.

more than "3 known copies" around.

Cheers,

I thought this was a nearer 25 count than 3, asked Andy and he said the same. Know of 4 or 5 with mates alone.

I'm sure there are only two known copies of "The Hurting Is Over" by Arthur Willis & The Soulful Dynamics on Mars La Tour (remember I raved about this a few months ago!!).

They're believed to be in the hands of Butch and Andy Rix. Also add to the list (please correct me if I'm wrong):

The Limelites: Don't Leave Me Baby (Uncle) - 2/3 copies?

Royal Five: My Baby Cares For Me (Cobra) - 2 copies (I think)

Rodd Keith: Like The Lord Said (Preview) - 3 copies?

Kenny Gamble: Chains Of Love (Arctic) - 1 copy?

Thought of a few more...

Margaret Little - Love finds a way - 2 known

Billy Wisdom - Handwriting - 1 Out-a-site copy and about 3 acetates... let me know when this turns up  would lve one

Gene tones ISSUE - just the one as far as I know

Gwen Owens "Wanted and needed" - 3 original issues (?) and a few more demos, or is it the other way round :)

Damon Fox - 4 copies?

Ernest Mosley DEMO - 1 copy, but fairly easy on blue label...

Walter Wilson - 3 according to JM

Ivorys on Wand - heard there were only a handful. Is this true?

'bout it now for me...anyone else??

Gwen owens & Melvin Davis

I think that Gwen Owens "Mystery man" on Oncore is rarer than her "Wanted & Needed" (of which at least about ten copies surfaced since she last visited Britain...).

The rarest of them all Melvin Davis has to be his Jackpot 45. I know of only two copies and most people including Tim Brown and Butch did not even know about this recording. A fab doublesider btw.

How do people regard 'rarer' copies on 'rarer' formats?

ie If there were a thousand and one issues but only 2 dj copies, or vice versa.

Or, a few 'local' releases, before going to a larger label?

How would it effect the values?

The record is "avaiable" in it's original format, either demo or issue regardless of scarcity of one or the other. It's not as tho' there are only two known copies full stop (demos), there would be a 1001 issues also so the record is more obtainable. Value of the 2 known demos would surely be reflected but the record isn't a 2 kinown copy is it in the same token as Margaret Little or Kell Osbourne (Highland).

What about Clyde McPhatter's "Please give me one more chance" Decca 45, was that real Mr Potts?

The rarest of them all Melvin Davis has to be his Jackpot 45.

I just typed Melvin Davis and Jackpot on google to find out more and I got a list of Michigan Lottery winners with a certain Melvin Davis from Detroit on the list. Wonder if it was the one we know? :)

OK so I go back for the hundredth time to my White Demo of Gail Anderson - Be Proud you are in love. Issues are very common, but I have only been able to find word of 2 other copies. Does this mean I am sat on a rarity that might be worth a few quid, or does the fact that since Stafford, hardly anyone bothers with it, so I am sat on a rarity worth peanuts?? :)

Tricky one Mikey and it appears you do have a rarity on your hands but as the issue is fairly common, seen a couple @ £150 recently I doubt this would reflect in the demo too greatly. Demo would be priced accordingly but doubt to the same effect as if it were a one copy record. Toughie really to price as not many others seem to have seen one.

great comment.

i've hundreds & hundreds of those type of 'toones' 'tunes'(i've a copy of that somewhere, try, try 'you're my baby', same geezer, and nightwalker-stalker or something or other, not the simco job, b sides differ, someone help my brain latch on to the right one, old soul age!) and 100's of other super rare worthless classic soul dance able records.

Re don gardner = 100's

we are all sat on a fortune, but would you sell them?

as for 'known' copies i feel thats a little ambiguous, who in their right mind presses 3 known copies? somewhere, my friends, there must be more.

I'll say! Pat sold one for £3,000 a while back didn't he? So it can't be a common record to sell for that much! But on the other hand the boots must affect the price.....in fact, think one sold on eBay a month or two ago fo about $1,200 (£700)....bugger! missed it!

Not sure if many know this, Gene Holiday - Scratch My Name Off The Mailbox on Johnson. I've heard there are only five known copies, two of which are here in Dublin; I've a Demo and my mate's an issue. Got mine from the states about a year and a half ago from a doo wop dealer. I've heard it ranging from £250 to £500 but price could be reflective of not being well known rather than rarity. In the right hands, could go through the roof.

Incidentally, Rob Thomas didn't know it and Carl Willingham told me the $100 I paid for it was a bargain.

Anybody got any info on this?

Regarding Gene Toones Blue stock/issue Simco copy and Mark White will be able to confirm this, he sold it to me in the early 80's for a snip compared to today's prices think i got that and a George Freeman demo for about £45.00, i then sold both that and an Empire's Candi demo to Carl Fortnum for £805.00 for the pair around 1989 ish, i think Gary Spencer had the Gene Toones not sure?

It was a blue lable printed directly onto the vinyl and the script/wording/title etc. was almost worn away, also it developed a slight hiss at the start, love to known who has this now.

Hope this helps, regards - Mark Bicknell.

Pat Brady had an issue when he was playing this at Clifton Hall/Wigan in the early eighties. I thought Gary Spence got his off Pat. (Swapped demo and other record). Long time ago though, might be wrong about it being GS. Are there two copies then ?

You could be one of the five Paul. There are the two in Dublin, and I've heard a bloke in Wigan has another but I don't know where the other two are. Incidentally, any copy I've heard of have been issues, mine's the only demo I've heard of.
