New Releases for AUGUST 2003

from Ace Records..

STRAIGHT TO WATTS - The Central Avenue Scene 1951-54 - ACE - CDCHD 868

To the north and west of Los Angeles' famed Central Avenue and to the south and east of Hollywood is where trumpeter/producer/ songwriter Jake Porter ran his little Combo label out of his home on a tiny budget. more

THE LAURIE RECORDS STORY VOL 2 - ACE - CDCHD 883

Almost from its inception in 1958, until its demise in the 1990s, the name of Ernie Maresca looms large in the story of Laurie Records. He wrote or co-wrote every track on this collection. A man for all seasons, the Bronx-born Italian-American songwriter, singer, producer and sometime hitmaker started out hustling his demos to Dion and ended up running the company's publishing arm. more

B.B. KING / King Of The Blues - ACE - CDCHM 897

KING OF THE BLUES was the sixth of B.B. King's twelve Crown LPs, and if there were no other reason to be cheerful, we should congratulate the Bihari brothers for resisting the world's most obvious title for so long. But while it may be obvious, as a description King Of The Blues is no hype; rather, it's an accurate assessment of the man, his music and his status, both in the early 60s and now. more

DOC WILEY TRIO / Wild Cat Boogie - The Complete Sensation Recordings - ACE - CDCHM 899

As "Great Unknowns" go, Arnold "Doc" Wiley is both - great and (relatively) unknown. Indeed - until fairly recently, almost nothing at all was known about his personal life. Intrepid bluesologist Paul Swinton tracked down Wiley's niece Irene not so long ago, and it's thanks to Paul (who provided the notes) and Irene (who provided the only known photographs of her late uncle) that we are able to present this CD with an attractive booklet rather than a blank square of card! more

TERRY CALLIER / The New Folk Sound Of.. - BGP - CDBGPM 156

As I walk into a rehearsal studio in North West London I am dreading hearing a clapped out guy who hasn't sung in ten years mauling songs that I was beginning to hold very dear to my heart. A bearded figure clad in jeans and a sweatshirt, with a woolly hat on his head - surely Chicago was colder - was strumming his guitar. "Well here's a mystery / And maybe you can help to make it clear to me". more

THE SONICS / Psycho-Sonic - BIG BEAT - CDWIKD 115

One of the best selling Big Beat releases of recent years has been PSYCHO-SONIC, a comprehensive collection of all the sides the much-feted kings of garage rock recorded for the Etiquette label in 1964/65. Only the most cloistered of music fans would be unaware of the mighty Tacoma combo's influence and importance, now stronger than ever thanks to young bucks such as the White Stripes, Hives, Vines etc constantly dropping the band's name. more

THE PRISONERS / The Last Fourfathers - BIG BEAT - CDWIKM 223

THE LAST FOURFATHERS is unarguably the best set of British rock'n'roll (not to mention garage punk, psych, mod soul and general Hammond-fuelled frenzy) of the past 20 years. For once, objectivity don't come into it. What would you match it against, anyhow? The Stone Roses' debut? Don't make me laff! Oasis's first album? Oh, pleeze! more

CHET BAKER / Do It The Hard Way - The Riverside Years - BOPLICITY - CDBOPD 022

It's the 1950s and rebellious film stars are a bit of a must. Mean and moody, like James Dean or Marlon Brando. It gets both the boys and the girls interested, mostly, but not always for different reasons. It is in this context that Chet Baker first came to fame with a series of records on Richard Bock's Pacific Jazz label. And all it takes is a look at the cover of our new CD to see how it would have worked. more

THE FROST / The Best Of - VANGUARD - VCD 79708

Hailing from Saginaw, Michigan, but an integral part of the 1960s Detroit rock scene that also spawned Iggy Pop & The Stooges and the MC5, the Frost were a testament to the twin effects of electric Chicago blues and the British R&B invasion groups upon the emerging 'heavy' sound of late 1960s rock'n'roll. more

THE GREENBRIAR BOYS / Big Apple Bluegrass - VANGUARD - VCD 79723

This urban bluegrass group first came together in 1958 and, initially, comprised guitarist John Herald, banjo player Bob Yellin and multi-instrumentalist Eric Weissberg. Herald can be heard as an excellent support musician on numerous Vanguard albums. In 1959, Weissberg left the group (he would go on to work with the Tarriers and record the much-acclaimed Duelin' Banjos for the highly influential soundtrack of the film Deliverance). more
