I decided to play a few from my 70s oldies box tonight.

These were never that rare (back in the day),but they're sending me to bed a happy man,(along with the bottle of Merlot);

Brooklyn Dreams-Never Had A Love So Good Casablanca

Kumano-I'll Cry For You Prelude

Sidney Thomas-Look Let's Make Love Parallel

Felix Cavaliere-Never Felt Love Before Bearsville

Oscar Perry-Main String Peri-tone

Rock Glazers-I Belive in Love Sixth Avenue

Does anyone play these out these days?.............What forgotten 70s tunes do you have hidden that you haven't played for donkeys?........

Memories of Snaith and Cleethorpes, proving it doesn't have to be rare to be good

These r gr8 choices of forgotten/unplayed 70's. And they r soulful. Give me these over rock & roll ne day. Kumano is probably the best 70's ever IMHO.

How about these too:

Kashif - Rumors (correct spelling)

Curtis - How Can I tell Her

King Tutt - You Got Me Hung Up

Harvey Mason - How Does It Feel

As I cant stand rock & roll I no longer attend soul nights anymore so apologies if they are being played

Rockgazers is terrific and never seems to get a mention, let alone a spin or two. Gotta admit that Kumano never did it for me but the others are all good. There are so many 70s tunes to play it makes you wonder why the Scene went backwards and started playing Rockabilly tunes  IMHO ofcourse!

Here's a couple that also don't get a mention

Patti Labelle - You Make It So Hard To Say No

Eloise Laws - If I Don't Watch Out

Love Commitee - I Made A Mistake

Cheers

John, was playing the Laura Lee only yesterday. Excellent. I'd forgotten how good the other side was too: "If I'm Good Enough To Love (I'm Good Enough To Marry)."

Records that might have sounded commonplace years ago are sometimes actually pretty amazing to revisit. To me there was a depth of quality in seventies soul music that we may have taken for granted in the past. The skills utilised in the vocals, production and playing on these tracks was sometimes breathtaking.

I agree Gareth , the quality of some x - over and out and out 70s are ace , a glorious period - the thing that has always amused(the soul scenes not supposed to be funny) and delighted me is that some 70s have the ability to start really poorly but halfway through you've heard something that makes you have a complete change of heart , as yo,ve mentioned earlier a great piece of production wizardry etc ,

Not sure Mikey, mine's on vinyl.

The stock number is the same, so that could mean a number of things whistling.gif

Who were Brown Door a subsid. of?? Haven't got copy with me at work  so can't have a read of the label!

If they're an Indie, wouldn't have thought they'd have pressed at more than one plant????

Styrene's the boot, isn't it? Reflected in the sound quality or lack of. That one got a few 'recent spins' a few months back when Keb picked up on it again, briefly, hence the slight flurry of interest around that time. Cracking record...gave it a listen again this morning.

Marvin Holmes & Justice - styrene and vinyl....

According to Ovenchip's it wasn't booted.... just an issue on each.... I too thought the styrene was a boot.... same reason as above.... the sound appears "low"....

So who's to say Ovenchip's knows best on this one rolleyes.gif ....

Remains one of them "is it or isn't it" questions I suspect unless anybody else can shed some light on it....

"(If You Want To Try Love Again) Remember Me" also came out on Invictus with "Don't Leave Me Starving For Your Love" as the "B" side.

The mix of "Remember me" is different on the Invictus release and IMHO better.

Here's a few that I suppose those not there at the time would be baffled as to why they were popular: (Other than they're infectious dancers)

Judy Freeman & Blackrock - Hold On - RCA

Babe Ruth - Elusive - Capitol

Billy Nichols - Diamond Ring - Westside

I think Billy Nichols is possibly early 80's - but you knoworra mean!!!

Jamie, the Judy Freeman and BlackRock has been a big revival darn sarf for a few years now, Ady C and then Greg playing the unreleased six or seven minute version via acetate. It's an incredible record, surely one of the most soulful records ever played on the Northern scene.

Pat Brady reactivated Judy Freeman around 76/77 and it became quite a big record.

Babe Ruth ??????????/ but very popular

Billy Nicholls, late Wigan/Clifton Hall. As you say, early eighties, same time as Leon Bryantt 'Mighty Body Hotsy Totsy' , 'Janice' etc
