Martial Arts & Northern Soul In The 70s

Recommended Posts

I've seen plenty of reference to martial artists influencing northern soul dancing in the 70s. Just wondering if there were any girl dancers that were also martial artists at the time and if so how did their style differ?

thanks

Hi Wendy, I did martial arts at the end of the 7Ts but my dancing's still crap lol. There weren't that many women doing martial arts back then....maybe judo but not karate. I knew the ladies world judo champion and later the ladies world kick boxing champion but they really were in the minority. Circa 78/79, my class consisted of me vs. 20 bricklayers/ scaffolders who all thought they were Bruce Lee  They hated me as I was more bendy  Does that answer your question? Jo

Thank you Jo for your sensible answer. The reason I asked was because I had a conversation with my mate Pip & he reckoned the martial arts werent that big with girls at the time. Which made me wonder if girls were doing the more demented moves on the dancefloor....I guess there wasnt much room for them anyway as Billy's ego took up so much space.

I'm just kiddin' !

Billy, was she mixed race and did she wear a leotard with a circular skirt - I think she was with the Scottish crowd. Always used to stand/ dance/ twirl round/ leap up in the air and touch her toes near the front of the stage. I only remember seeing her from about '78 onwards. She probably did gymnastics rather than martial arts...I recognised some of the moves from the B.A.G.A badge charts wicked.gif:thumbsup: I was jealous of her as I only got my 4, 3 & 2 B.A.G.A badge and could never acheive the bendy excellence needed for Badge One :shhh: Jo

Wendy, spinning was always big with the girls....specially if you sewed metal washers under the hem of your circular skirt. That gave a much better elevation and undulation of the skirt.....and view of your white drawers wicked.gif:thumbsup: There were VERY few girls who did the backdrops and kicks with the power of the guys 1) because you'd get even hotter and sweatier than you already were in the 130 deg temp of a full floor at the Casino and 2) those moves over an 8 hour period required stamina and bucketfuls of speed and 3) you'd get your skirt dirty and all the other feeble girlie excuses....there was only one girl who really looked the part and moved with assurance and that was Linda from Grimsby (?). I mentioned her in 'The Best Dancers' thread. She was a pleasure to watch and eclipsed anybody - male or female - for her dancing skills....beautiful  Jo

She was on Soul Nation or one of the recent soul documentaries. Seemed like a really nice person and was having a look back at her days on the soul scene.....

Good job she decided not to do a scissor split on you as favoured by Les Kellett....at least your ears would've been warm  See you soon Billy :wicked: Jo
