thumbup.gif That's great Harry, and I'm gonna try and get up to support it and I hope a few from this site, and certainly this thread, support it too.

It's maybe unfortunate that the Soul For Heroes (South) event is running so close to this one. With a venue in Chatham so near to the 80 acre Chatham Historic Dockyard, which is hosting events for Armed Forces Day, I saw it as too good an opportunity to miss. Gonna get down there and rattle a few charity buckets............or maybe more  - watch this space .

Are any of the guys on this thread coming down to Chatham for a bit of a re-union during the week long Armed Forces Day national celebrations at Chatham Historic Dockyard?

Entry to the site is free for those serving and for Vets sporting a Vets badge. Details, including how to get a vets badge are on www.armedforcesday.org.uk

I should be running a charity stand for Soul For Heroes, so throw a penny in the bucket and introduce yourself and we'll go for a beer!

I won't be there on the day itself, 27th June, as I'm doing the SFH Chatham Alldayer just a mile away (see the events thread if you're up for it).

Either way, dockyard or dancefloor, it'd be nice to put a few more faces to names.

Any ex Army people on here at all?

Be good to see where you were based and what clubs you went to.

Hi,just thought I would :hypo: 'break cover' and say Hello.

I was in the Sappers for 22 years and served everywhere and anywhere they sent me. Served in Iserlohn at first then came home for a good spell at 39 Eng Regt then 33 Independant Sqn, 62 Cyprus, Chepstow and 33 EOD both in Chatenden and Wimbish. During this time I met a few good soulies but the memory fades. Kev Villiers is one I recall, Dave Warr another.(anyone know of them)? I did the usual trade training at Brompton and went to lots of soul orientated dos around that area...oh aswell as the Brompton Stomp...hmmm!!!... KevinKent were you the Brompton Cowboy??:yes: ...lol I used to go to the Dockyard for their dos and always heard some Northern aswell as some good Jazzfunk so I guess that is testiment to the theory that squadies etc are responsible for the spread of this gospel that is Northern Soul.

I picked up some nice bits during my travels especialy from the states where all R'n'R was spent digging. Anyway I must tell you that I managed to get to the last Wigan even though I was on a Jnco cadre at the time..wasn't gonna miss that for anything. Almost got kicked off but managed to pass a BFT on the Mon morning in a Vgood time...cant imagine where the energy came from :shhh: .Glad I grew out of that though.

If anymore likeminded squadies read this please send a reply as I would appreciate the chat whilst sitting on a sandbag and swinging a light :)

Anyone going to the Army Navy game at Twikkers in May... be good to meet you for a wet. Ill be with the rest of the 'toffee wrapers' sporting my issue rugby shirt.

Cheers

Ubique...always

Paul

Hi Paul,

Always good to see another sapper on here mate!

I was at Iserlohn too - "Dirty" 30 Sqn, about '77 untill I got out in '79. Maybe a bit before your time.

Brompton Cowboy!!! Only time I was a cowboy was when I tried to ply my trade as a brickie  .

Where are you now mate, and where do you get out to? Ther's a few R.E.'s on here so I'd be surprised if some weren't close by.

Cheers,

Kev.

Ha, you're no sprog then Paul if you remember us moving down from Hohne! I was on a course at Brompton at the time and Pam had to move herself into new married quarters in Hamm. She cursed, but it was all nice and sorted by the time I got back to Germany.

Be great if you could get down for the 27th mate. Have a look at the thread on the events page - we've got Sister Dawn and Smudge Smith on the decks so there is a St Ives connection. Sapper Kev Such will be doing his bit too.

Paul,

I thought they always stood out, due to their lack of Soulfullness, you know not tapping their feet to the music etc...etc....

And it was really un-soulfull of them when they smashed in my front door, and took me to Wednesfield nick

wink.gif That's a big LOL mate, so I'm obviously missing something here.

Some squaddies i served with were deffo the most unsoulful lads on the planet. The one's that were soulful were real "defenders of the faith" - and still are.

Now, what unsoulful thing did you do to deserve getting your door kicked in? ........or were you just AWOL

Hi Harpo me old mate,

It wouldn't have been squadies that kicked your door in. It was more than likely members of 'the SQUAD' the collective nown, used effectionately by the soulfull youth of our nation, to describe a certain type of policeman durng the Wigan era.

They did look out of place with their lack of enthusiasm for the music especially in the casino, or in your case the 'Vic'. Always looking tired at about 4 am, not dancing, chewing or drinking copious amounts of water from the toilet sink taps, ferried to the tables in those little glass coke bottles...Times Guy!!

We,proper squadies, on the other hand were brimming with soul, paying silly money for records and spreading the faith all across the country. Squadies would enlighten the local populace, wherever we were stationed, of the gospel that is all things northern. As already mentioned on here the word spread by simple virtue of squadies travelling to the four corners of this land of ours and in some case to other shores, such as Wales Scotland and Germany. Although not proven it as more than likely a squady that was posted to Detroit and started the whole thing. This is a theory that is neither proven or refuted and could be researched by such great authors such as Dave Shaw etal. It is well documented that some of our scenes top names are indeed former member of the elite group known as 'squadies'. The scource of many soul tunes came from British based American 'squady' bases which gives further momentum to the theory of a british squady going over to Detroit because he would have told those Americans of the music in an exchange of information exercise. Typical of the American army, they would have copied and tried to expand or better what they had been told. I must admit they did a really good job and they are still trying to get it right today.

So kindly retract your accusation of squadies being un-soulfull

Spot on!

You'll appreciate the opening lines of the promo vid for the Soul for Heroes (South) Chatham 'dayer:

"IN THE EARLY '70s SERVICEMEN FROM THE MIDLANDS AND THE NORTH CARRIED THEIR ENTHUSIASM FOR NORTHERN SOUL FROM IT'S HEARTLAND IN THE NORTH TO THROUGHOUT THE UK AND BEYOND......"

........"NOW OUR SERVICEMEN NEED A HELPING HAND.........IT'S TIME TO REPAY THE DEBT".

vid has just been finalised and should be on the thread next week, so hope you enjoy it.

Can any of you help me find some old mates who were all in the army at some time (and one Navy chap). I need them for my 50th Birthday Party!

  • Knocker Cole (Andrew) originally from Stroud - disappeared off the scene when he went into the army. We used to travel all over together
  • Gary Summersgill - ex RHA (Bramcote, Kings Troop, Kirton in Lindsey etc) Sorry not an army type so don't know all the right technical terms for the places!!! Was a PT instructor, chef, horseman - in fact always seemed to be taking on new things
  • Gary Steele from Barnsley - was at Tidworth for a while. Last seen at Trentham Gardens a few years ago.
  • Ginge Halvey - ex Navy - last known working in Thailand but believe he's back now. Features dancing on a famous record cover!

cheers

Judy

Hi Judy, Ginge Halvey moved back to England in 2003 and is currently living in Buckinghamshire
