Hi there,

I'm just a whippersnapper of 26 and fairly new on the scene, although I'm slowly accumulating my favourite tracks and getting a few venues under my belt. I've been after a pair of soul bags for some time now and am having some difficulty 'sourcing' them, apart from one place on t'net that wanted upwards of £100! Do any kind folk out there still make them or know someone who does? Anyone who knows anything, please drop me a line on karim.adab@gmail.com...

Any cd recommendations while I'm at it? Most of the Goldmine stuff I've got is good (obviously) but as far as my limited knowledge is concerned, hit and miss. What tracks do I simply HAVE to have in my collection?

Advice more than welcome!

apart from wanting to buy the dreaded retro clothing  ...may i say how nice it is to see a few more whippersnappers coming onto this great scene...lets face it folks we need a few more young uns to push us round the dancefloor in our wheelchairs and help us out of our seats :D ...but seriously it gives us hope for the future of soul....

my CD advice would be steer clear of anything that says wigan classics on the front...

of course any CD compiled personally by any of us here will be the bees knees.....come on chaps give this youngster a few tracks to be going on with....

Welcome aboard.

You could always have a listen to some of the sounds on here  Just click on 'Sounds' at the top or have a listen to the ones people put up in the daily themed soundfile threads... if you particularly like a day's style then sure people will be able to recommend CDs with more of the same. Amazon also has a facility where you can search by song name if you want to find any of the tracks on CD.

https://www.soulclub.org/ is also great for hearing tunes - you can do a random playlist on there just by choosing a number of tracks which might throw up some you wouldn't have heard otherwise!

Hey it's nice to see the younger element joining our little fraternity & nice that they ask us wrinklies for advice, well heres some friend;

1. Theres 1000's of cd's for all tastes, so I'd just buy what i thought looked ok or go on sites like soulclub.org to listen to some tunes or on here Soul Source & hopefully this will give you some idea of your tastes & not other peoples.

2. There are NO must have records for any collection, just collect what you love & don't try collecting for others tastes, unless your Dj'ing.

3. The Spencer Bags you can still get, a couple of guys in Nottingham still make them & you can find clothing via some Northern Soul links but I think (personally) they look out dated & out of place now just like a fully draped Teddy boy would at your local disco.

Spot.

Google 'Oldtown', Willie, the designer there used to work for Demob in the early eighties who knocked out their own take on the northern 'bags' modelled at the 100 club and stafford by various london soulers.

Good on ya fella, you listen/dance to whatever sounds good to you, and wear whatever feels good to you,

Why what you wear/dance/listen to should be a pet hate of someone else is very sad indeed!

Don't listen to the preachers and do your own thing and don't be put off enjoying whatever floats ya boat!

You do your thing and let everybody else do theirs!

I think its time to pass on the pair that you had on in Cleethorpes :D ,give them a good home and watch the youngster swirl around like you did back in the old old days... ..Many take the piss sometimes regarding bags but they are perfect for dancing...Don't wear them on a 1st date though,it would be like Ainsley at a klan meeting

Stay off the bags and concentrate on the sounds ! You've a lifetime of stuff in front of you.Great way to get into it though.

Roxy Rob sells all sorts of retro clothing via the shop in Notts-right at the top end of Mansfield Road, they have also come to a couple of Prestatyns selling stuff.

Most of all enjoy it as most of us on here are still doing after 30 odd years at it !!

Could not agree more.

As someone who does wear bags, there's nothing better than putting on a great pair of strides, good shoes and hammering the dancefloor.

Would not go back to sweaty old jeans.

Yep think the still look great and make me feel all nostalgic when i see people wearing them...dont think i would cut it in them now....but have fond memories of badering me Mum to combine me Christmas , Birthday, Easter and any other money i might get , to have a pair made ( pre spncers bags circa 1975 i think) at a local tailors "Roadnights".... in light grey needle cord ,two lots of triple crown flaps on the back ,pair of double ones on the front and 5 button high waist band...wow how cool was that  ...trouble is i ran out of money to buy records and sold them to a mate couple of months later....shortly afterwards me Mum is standing in the post office behind this guy whos wearing them and accused him of nicking them....boy did i get a clip or two round the ear :sweatingbullets:

Two Cds that I have on quite a bit for their variety, but its knocking on for 1 in the morning and I'm not sure on the labels without looking:

'Golden Nuggets' and 'Eddy Edmondsons Soul in the sun'. Both have a good variety of tracks on them, from modern-ish to R&B.

Its also surprising what a trip to ASDA can turn up, there are some cheap compilations that have the odd gem hidden away on them. Just avoid anything with a picture of a soul patch on it

Hello

I did my own thing and got a pair of trousers made - didn't want the fully fledged Bags version so went to a 24 inch bottom (with the compulsory Turn-Ups of course). Cost me £60 which I thought was very reasonable. So you might find a little old lady tailoress locally like I did.

Not one for retro clothing, except during carnival time here, but if you're really interested in wearing gear like that, why not have 'em made at a tailors? back in the 70's, I used to go to burtons. you paid a bit more, but could have them exactly how you wanted them, specifying things like the cloth, sewn in pleats & creases, turnups, tunnel loops etc; I never bought a pair of spencers 'cos I always favoured a more conservative, simpler trew. I think the widest I ever went was 32", which is pretty wide anyway. my last pair were made of dark grey harris tweed and itched like hell. looked great with the old black brogues, tie & waistcoat though.

Imagine seeing a 50+ year-old "punk" complete with dyed mohican haircut, safety pins and tartan trousers walking down the high street, then look in the mirror and reflect how Spencer's Baggies would look on you now!
