Yep totally agree with that sometimes it does seem that some people spend a lot of time getting involved in uneccessary politics or B******t and forget what its all about "THE MUSIC"....do have another pet hate, thats people who have sent me records i have purchased and cant even be bothered to put them in a paper cover let alone a card one .....tight or what! and has happened on more than a few occasions....hasten to add was'nt any fellow soul sourcers Link to comment Social source share More sharing options...

Another is, why do all the dj's play the same handful of tunes, especially at allnighters where yo end up with the the same thing being played 5 or 6 times by different dj's. Come on dj's you've got a box of a hundred or so records with you, for gods sake mix 'em up a bit. p.s. to all who took the piss when I asked about soul-bags some time ago, I've got them, wear them and enjoy dancing in them. At the end of the day "its whats in the groove that counts" whether its a £10 or £500 pound tune is irrelevant. In fact some big money tunes I dont rate that much and I like all styles of soul. Remember being at a Ritz nighter in the 90s, not sure if it was a Rarest of the Rare night, but there were definately some big guns on the roster that night dropping some big rare tunes.....Dave Evison comes on and starts his set with these immortal words......" NOT IN ALL CASES try some more adventurous up front places Admittedly Mr darcy there is a certain element of keeping the dancers happy by playing tunes that you know will get the peeps dancing. But once the dancing is underway and you've got them up, isn't it better to put a few tunes on that as the chap up there putting them on, you hope that they will keep them up and dancing throughout and that may be appreciated(when the scene IMHO is primarilly a dance culture). I have paid some silly prices for tunes that i seriously wanted, but in the same token i have paid very small amounts (i.e. a few $'s) for tunes that i would certainly dance to and hope that others would dance to also. However if the tracks chosen by the chap putting the vinyl on haven't got people dancing then what is incorrect with putting a well known dancer on to get them up again and dancing and then try again with something else once the dancing is underway again. I am not suggesting for one moment that this comes down to educating, but as you are well aware and have stated on previous occasions, there are thousands of absolutely brilliant tracks available that dont get the airing they deserve because punters dont know them. I am constantly being amazed by tunes that i hear and am always learning. IMHO i believe that a healthy balance between the two factors (well known and not so) is possibly the key, not an entire evening dedicated to one or the other. For instance i have just heard Gene Burks "You got it". I personally have never heard it before, and i believe its brilliant and would certainly dance to it should it be played out. Now i'd imagine that the tune has more than likely been played inumerous times elsewhere, by infanitely more capable DJ's than myself( not that i class my self as i DJ par se), but i haven't heard it. So consequently i shall endeavour to get a copy and play it when i am doing a spot somewhere and see how it goes down. If the track doesn't work, and god only knows why it shouldn't,i wouldn't give up on it, i will continue to play it to try and get a good reaction to it. But i will sandwich it between two other tracks that i know people will dance to that are of the same sort of feel. I have probably made NO sense in my post whatsoever, but i do feel that there is nothing wrong with playing some tunes to keep people dancing but playing others in a set to hopefully get them also appreciated. I travel around the country sometimes revisiting fav places and other times trying out new ones. INVHO for what it's worth I dance to the feel and beat not the rareity or the familiarity of the tune. I like to hear 30% well played classics 40% familiar tunes and 30% never heard before, well not in my memory anyway which is flaggin these days. I love to hear new tunes, thats what keeps the scene interesting. Anyway lost the thread.... My pet hates are the same as others namely drinks on the dancefloor and people standing chatting on the dance floor...no surprise there...but also people who think a record is fantastic just coz it's rare. Sometimes it's rare for a very good reason...It's c**p! Also people who take the piss if you like something commercial and overplayed. Mind you I'm guilty of that as i hate 'Do I love you', sit down on principle when it's played and berrate anyone who even taps their foot to it so maybe i sould remove the mote from mine own eye!!!! With regards Kev Such [/quote when l go to what l call serious soul nights usually oop north this is where I expect to hear a greater variety of soul music and pretty much always do, not just rare stuff but underplated and unknown. the reason for this is because the guy's playing these tunes are long time record COLLECTORS they buy records to COLLECT dj'ing is secondary to them, whether they pay 5k or £5 for a tune . this is a general misconception on this site that these fellas only buy rare expensive tunes to dj with. l know quite a few of em and to a man whatever they pay is because they want the tune in their collection.Some fine examples are KITCH , DEAN ANDERSON ,BUTCH ,CLIFF CAMFIELD, DICKY WATT, PAUL SADOT,AND CLIFF STEELE and quite a few more. Fun you should write that Stevie, I went to a long running local soul night last month that was held in a huge sports hall only to find 20ish punters in there and this coming month it is advertised as one of the best soul nights in the country . People who worry more about what a tune is worth (or rather what it costs) than what it sounds like Blokes who amble in to a soul night at 11.30 after a dozen Stellas in the alehouse and hit the dancefloor, sending all and sundry flying, only to retire with a John Barnes hamstring or asthma attack symptoms 90 seconds later People who are never knowingly wrong. Was at an allnighter many moons ago. Went like this; My mate: "Have you got that record Ain't a bit sorry, by Ben E King"? Dealer (deadpan): "Ain't by Ben E King". My mate: "Whose it by then"? Dealer (still deadpan): "Dedications". My mate: "Who"? Dealer: "Dedications". My mate: "You got it"? Dealer (practically scowling) "No". A little while later that night my mate managed to pick up a copy of said track. On passing by happy chappy dealer # 1, mate mentioned in a cheerful voice that he'd got that Dedications track. Looking at old sales lists from Soulbowl and JMs etc from back in the day and kicking myself for not buying every single 45 on there when I should have. We got health, good mates and family that love us, and music that means so much. All we need now is for the sun to shine and we will have a summer.
