I`m a simple country boy so can someone explain the meaning of term popcorn which has been added to the northern soul classification by this seller.

Is it an american thing or has another category of music on this scene passed me by.

"popcorn" as listed in the Trevski concise soul dictionary- "Originating in Belgium the term popcorn, when applied to music, is a combination of the words 'popular' and 'corny'. Frequently used to describe any crap corny pop record that has nothing whatsoever to do with Northern Soul, but inexplicably gets played anyway. :wicked:

In last nights Neighbours, a lad expressed his displeasure at something by calling it 'Belgium'.

i do know quite a few tunes big on the northern scene were first played on the popcorn scene in belguim. Flipside at sheridan do a once a year popcorn special in the small room. I admit a lot of it is a bit strange but amongst that you can hear some nice stuff. especially beat ballads etc.

pikeys dog and maybe miss popcorn can give us some factual statements regarding popcorn finds etc. i think wade flemons that other place was one??

over to the popcorn specialists to shut these doubters up!

Nah, Wade Flemons was played at least as far back as '89 if not more. When popcorn was only something you heard rustling behind you in the cinema!

I don't know alot about the Popcorn scene, except that it is a Dance Scene founded on the mid-tempo side of things.

Was played and Booted on the Belgian Popcorn scene in the mid-seventies....

As were loads of Okeh label releases.

Tangiers - Let My Heart And Soul Be Free was also much in demand there in the 1970s.

or how about:

Betty O'Brien - She'll Be Gone - Liberty (This got a Belgian Boot)

Popcorn is like Northern in the fact that whilst there are some absolutely storming records, there is also a fair amount of shite played.

Making sweeping statements about any musical genre / style only means you end up missing out on the cream.

I'm sure Miss Popcorn could name quite a few tracks that were played out oldies on the Popcorn Scene well before Northern Venues picked up on them.

WOOF!

There has been some great popcorn find over the years which have crept onto the soul scene - it's all relative at the end of the day -

One of the best records I own is Kylo Turner - I'll keep thinking of you - sar which was and still is a massive popcorn sound
