Soul+ Sheffield Friday 27th July

Recommended Posts

SOUL+

The Runaway Girl, Arundel Street, Sheffield (next to the globe pub) 0114 2706160.

Friday 27th June 8-00 till late

Previously held on Thursdays, this is the first of our monthly Friday night sessions.

Enjoy great food and great music in this tasty bar environment. Classic northern soul and motown, along with a splash of modern and R&B, all being spun by residents Lofty (Soul Republic), John Moffatt (Victory Club, KGB), along with guests: Graham Wright (Moke Soul Club- Sheffield), Jay (Pressure Drop, Chesterfield) and Algie (Wakefield).

Its a busy night for soul do's in Sheffield this Friday, with at least two other events on to our knowledge. We will be working to avoid such clashes in future, but if your planning to attend other events - why not pop along to us for either an early bite (highly recommended food served until 9.00), or a late night (if the bars busy we can go on beyond 2.00).

There is a food offer on of a free bottle of Cava for every party of four eating before 9.00. Just mention Soul+ when making your booking (or on arrival).

Sounds good, shame it clashes with the QUBE, can you tell me the music philosophy is it original vinyl only ? Would like to come and support any Sheffield original vinyl soul event.

Hi Bret

It is primarily original vinyl (one of our guys plays 80s 90s soul in other formats, and the odd second or UK issue gets a spin). The philosophy is a broad interpretation of soul (thats why its soul+), John favours 60s and RnB, I play a bit of underplayed 70s (and even complementary current releases- Nichol Willis etc) - and we both like the middleground of classic northern and motown. No cheese though (although, being a city bar youve got to expect the odd request for such from the casual punter). One of the objectives is to play interesting stuff that doesnt get an airing when a venue is all about keeping the floor going. Its all about the music, and the sound system is pretty good.

Because it isnt a dancehall event as such (although there is a dancing area) we can vary the tempo- and particularly in the early part of the evening there are people eating- so its background music. Weve been doing it on Thursday nights for a while - with mixed success, but this is the first of what we expect to be approximately bi-monthly Fridays sessions. Its a shame we clash with the QUBE, and will be looking to avoid that in future - but we had no options on the dates this time round. We are also happy to have fliers from anywhere (and the bar owner understands the principles of such like- some dont of course).

Hope you can pop down at some point, and say hello.

cheers

Lofty
