Eighties Soul

Hi all,

Just wanted a few suggestions for some good eighties tunes I might have missed out on. By eighties tunes, I don't mean one-off seven-inch obscurities on minor labels out of Texas, I mean major label releases that I might stand a chance of getting hold of and,who knows, one day might fetch big cash - once the obsession for seventies releases dies down that is!

Of course i have no idea how good your knowledge is of 80s soul so you might know these but here goes:

Rockie Robbins "you & me" (A&M LP)

Switch "keeping secrets" (Total Experience LP)

Rick James "fool on the street" (Gordy)

Chicago Pete "i'm begging you" (Valerie)

Fatu "just one look" (Fire Mountain)

Linda Tillery "secrets" (411 12")

Narrow it down a little... ph34r.gif

A little tip. If you can use the internet to pick up radio, try a few USA stations offering R & B/ Soul etc. Chicago/NewYork stations have some great Oldies shows and its worth the try.

Even in the 80s, most of the records played at soul venues, especially Northern, were still oldies, and the Jazz Funk scene played - well - Jazz Funk with not much soul as I remember (Another brick in the wall - seriously).

Webster Lewis - Let Me Be The One - Epic £10-£15

Atlantic Starr - Circles - A&M £10-£15

Charles Mann - Sho Nuff No Funny Stuff Love - LA £10

Johnny Bristol - Love No Longer Has A Hold On Me - Hansa/Ariola £10

Billy Nichols - Diamond Ring - West Side £10

All very early 80's, I spose still sounding late 70's.

Cheers,

Jamie

(Can I also add that none of those will ever be worth anymore than that!!! ph34r.gif )

Thanks very much everyone for some excellent reccomendations. As is stated above, some fine soul music emerged during the eighties - just doesn't seem to be getting much of a spin at the moment. Looks like I might not be the only one who feels that way.

Some excellent tunes due some exposure include -

Intrigue - Let Sleeping Dogs Lie

Billy Always - Back on Track

Gladys Knight and The Pips - When You're Far Away

John White - Fooled Around And Fell In Love

Beau Williams - All Because of You

THS - Shine On

Anymore for anymore?

It was called Lola's Theme by the Shapeshifters. Have a look at the video/sound clip:

https://www.virgin.net/music/musicvideos/sh...astheme_hi.html

Not bad - apart from the dreadful synthey percussion backing.

Watch out for the tranny at the end of the video burst!!!

I think the 80s was more of an LPs period, especially in view of the slower tempo the higher quality soul tracks had. Other goodies that spring to mind are:

Broomfield

Vanesse Thomas

Stephanie Mills "If I Were Your Woman"

By All Means

Anita Baker

Chapter 8 (both)

Perri "The Flight"

Miles Jaye "Irresistible"

Always liked this one from 85.

Absolutely sublime record. I'd definitely take that as one of my desert island discs. If anyone out there hasn't heard this try to check it out - and it shouldn't cost much more than a few pints of lager.

Bert Robinson only put out 2 lp's and they are fantastic, got some great ballads on there, first one has a track on it called something like Never Gonna let you go (nothing to do with Rick Astley) and its sublime as i recall. Also check out John Whitehead album I Need Money Bad. Think these were all coming out on Capitol at that time, Beau Williams was another, Willie Collins, HUSH productions i think.

Stanley Williams quality, got Coming Back Home on the other side aswell.

Just played Jennifer Holliday- Heartstrings, that sounds good, was on first (?) ever cassette derek pearson did with SOS.

Bigsoulman

I've tried looking around the web for one - but with no success I'm sorry.

I've got the record but I've never transferred one onto my computer before - so would probably take for ever to sort it out to send on a soundbyte.

Hope someone else can help - Hippo or Billythe boot are good at posting up sounds.

If you see it out this weekend buy it blind - I'm sure you won't regret it. It's very much mid tempo, not an out and out Northern dancer by any stretch of the imagination; but if you're into nice catchy tunes and top lyrics you just can't go wrong with this.

But don't SHOUT at me if it's not your cup of tea!!

Just subscribe to Rod Dearloves lists.....banging tunes, some pricey, many not......

what about Bill Spoon 12" on Hense Forth think it was a 1990 release, tremendous two step genius, should cost around £25.....but be quick, cause i feel that price will jump in time (just my opinion.......)
