"Wigan casino" so called revisited!! thmbdn.gifthmbdn.gifthmbdn.gif So what did you think of it?

Here,s what i thought.....Travelled 80 miles down there with my husband, daughter and two very good friends,my daughter Gemma and mate Patch each bought the so called V I P tickets!!:lol: With the promise of photo with "Dean Parrish" and the dj,s which i hastened to add did,nt happen. thmbdn.gif Champagne more like "pomagne"!! And this was supposed to take place as stated on the ticket between 8 - 9 pm,we were,nt let in there till 8.30 pm!! Got in there expecting this fantastic wooden dancefloor,as Patch was told by Russ Winstanley would be there and was,nt!! And also it was mean,t to be by ticket only and they were letting people just walk in off the street and pay on the door. Musically "brilliant" but what a complete "EMBARASSMENT" to the much loved "WIGAN CASINO" They made a mockery of it,needless to say we could,nt bring ourselves to stay on till the end!!:lol:

what were the accoustics like Helen?

Why does this not surprise me?

When are people going to realise that all these "revival" events are overblown, overhyped, overpriced nonsense.

"Keep The Faith" ? - think it's more a case of "Keep The Money"

Could,nt agree with you more!! Would have been much better idea to have held this event at "KINGS HALL" after all it practically resembles it!

I was listening to the radio last night and Russ Winstanley said there were a couple of thousand in there and " a bit of a queue at the Bar " which ties in with Helens account of them letting people in off the street.

Our friends went along last night , no reports from N Wales Soul Intelligence agency as yet ( all probably wiped out in bed )

I passed on the idea of attending as I wanted to remember the Casino as it was and couldnt imagine myself dancing in front of Boots shop window trying my hardest to convince myself I had travelled back in time to the magical days of the Casino- best to remember it as it was .

I agree somewhere like Kings Hall would certainly be a better type of venue if one is trying to recreate the nostalgia of a 1920s Dancehall full of Northern Soul Dancers, rather than the glass and concrete of a modern shopping arcade.

I hope people did enjoy themselves and I dont want to come across as a sniping bugger taking the p*ss out the event, just seemed a bit of a tall order trying to create that kind of special atmosphere in such a modern building.

Did Mr Parrish's trapped nerve impede his performance, as last year when I saw him he was superb.

Can,t comment on that cause we did,nt stick around long enough to find out,to peed off to stay on any longer...or more to the point "EMBARESSED" But to be fair he,s performance at Prestatyn was FAB!!

Went over last night for the hell of it and i got a free ticket which helped, not that it mattered!! i walked in without anyone asking me a dickbird so i felt sorry for those who dished out 12 scoops or more for the event... it was all a bit wierd having a shuffle in front of specsavers on a tiled floor!! i thought there were gonna get some wooden one layed down??

thousands of people? no chance, good few hundred but maybe im wrong about that, but it didnt seem like that many.... not a fan of the live act though i have seen some great ones in the past, but singing to a backing track on a cd sounded pure pish in my opinion and a little embarassing....

Was nice to meet a lot of friends from around the country in the one venue...

My highlight of the night, heading off to the all nighter at the cricketers club with the lads (and ladies) and hearing Steve Thomas play some top notch SOUL... Cheers Steve!

You have got to be joking, call yourself an "old school" soulie no way!!!!!! you cant be if you thought that the nite was brilliant are you on another planet? And what do you mean "only 33"? I am only 22 years old and I feel like people like you give a false impression of what a good soul nite should consist of. The only thing I agree with you about is the class tunes, shame there was'nt a proper dance floor to go with it. I was so embarrassed to be there and I feel sad because I expected

Whats this about laying some ghosts to rest and having a crakin night, it must have been a long time since you have been to a proper Northern Soul nite. I can't believe that you thought it was good. Im only 22 years old and I am sooooooooooo passionate about the scene and I love dancin so much but last night made me feel like giving up, if you wanna keep the flame burning you should respect younger peoples views because we are the ones that gonna keep it burning. Why is it any large retro events are fair game for negative lookback? yet all other events seem to get virtually total positive feedback reports?

I didn't go, not my cup of tea (no pun intended) really, just a little curious as to why its very rare to read such adverse reports on most smaller events, they can't all be all things to all men/women!

Ok i,ve read all the threads....................Sue and i attended last night....what did we think....Musically yes all the memories were there..........as for organisation of an event CRAP utter crap.I waited 40 minutes to get served at the bar !!!! at one point a bouncer said to me "go over the road mate to wetherspoons and bring your drinks back,it will be quicker"

We also had (supposedly) vip tickets,,what did we get for that,a glass of yellow liquid that was quite frankly undrinkable and that was it !!! No meeting Dean Parrish, nothing.I actually felt like i was in an airport lounge waiting for a flight - all expectation with the flight being cancelled.

The only saving grace from the night was meeting and talking to,for about 20 minutes,Richie Pitts who was quite clearly, like the rest of us freezing his nuts off.

To sum up.....i feel like i have just bought an Ian Levine cd expecting to hear top tunes but finding it all synchopated music.....Sorry but i do feel like i,ve been ripped off.

What saddens me is to think that the Casino was portrayed to the younger element among us in that way. Some might say "why did you go",,,because my wife did not attend the casino and i really wanted her to get a flavour of what it was like.........it didnt work, and yes she does feel let down

people go somewhere to sometimes to get a taste of what once was.. to do one more time perhaps.. to feel a something now perhaps only in your memory... younger soulies are really important.... i hope they too can have memories of a time they can make thier own....and understand that to go somewhere where once somthing was, can be a special thing that someone who was not there cannot understand ...i am glad you enjoy your northern soul, i know it will always be in your blood now.... but it was not the same then...we were 16 , 18, 20, or so ..it was our time....dont tell me im not a soulie, as i would not tell you the same, but give some lead to some who for a while are not 52... but 18 again ....

i dont think anyone went expectin to se the casino again though?

ps..i go soulin to great northern nites every week and am "old skool".. and am lucky enough to have superb venues to attend.... i don't give a sod how much money promoters make, or who they are....they put the work in, they take risks..live off northern soul and if they make lots of money .well ok... i had a mega nite, loved it and have great nites most weeks for a fiver or less.. and if it cost £12 measly quid well they can have it again,... guess its me stirrin it again lol

as for the event organisation, well perhaps not... for sure, if you paid for the expensive tickets you must be a bit miffed too.....

I could never get a good memory from an event that seemed like a nightmare to me. Yes you might think I dont understand what it was like at Wigan but I know why it all began and I can imagine what it was like. And last nite did not do justice for the Casino and the people that went there because most of the people there were not soulies and could not appreciate it because most of them were either too pissed or dancing around their handbags. I wore my badges with pride and took effort to dress typically soulful for the event, yet I felt very out of place. My friend Tom who is a Wigan fanatic was very disappointed and also felt very embarrassed, hes 50 by the way. Dont agree about the money issue, I paid 20 pounds and didnt get anything I was promised and i believe that the night was a stunt all in the name of money!!! You might think its ok to pay that amount but Im not especially considering that the scene was created and at its peak at a time when people had no money. Now I feel the scene is being dominated by greed like everything else in this world. And these are the people that are spoiling it for everyone else, (Russ Winstanley). If I knew I was gonna be dancing in a shopping mall I would have gone to the Merry Hill Centre with my ghetto blaster, I would have had a much better time and saved 20 squid. Sorry to hear it was a dissapointment mate, Sue did text Angela and say as much ,I just wanted to wait until you give your two penneth on here as to what you thought about it.

I suspected as much when I read about the intentions to hold this night that it would turn out a bit of a sad attempt at reviving something so utterably magical in its time, that nobody could really do it justice.

I didnt think it was at all achievable to try and create the same atmosphere in a building that, albeit stands on the site of the Hallowed Casino, has nothing either architecturally in common, not musty , old, dark and simply reeking of charactor like the casino was , but a shiny new light echoey building a shrine to consumerism  sorry that dont work.

Its all about setting the ambience isnt it and trying to pass that off as the Casino was about a likely as expecting the missus to allow you to mount her in Asda whilst she reaches for some fish fingers in the Freezer Section .

I think you would have to have your imagination working overtime , Plus a visit to a really special kinda Dealer to make that happen

Not getting mardy on ya mate, like you say everyone to their own ay!! Just felt as though there was a lack of " togetherness" there last night. Felt as though the night should have been more organised and should have catered for everyone. And it didnt cater for the true soulies, some travelling miles to re - live something that could never be achieved within the modern setting of a shopping centre. I confronted Russ Winstanley myself just before we left at about 12.00. Asked him why I didnt get my "VIP" POMAIGNE and photo with Dean. He answered It was the bar staff they got it all wrong and he said " Dean will be on in a minute. Think he expected me to jump on stage with him and get a quick snap as compensation, then he just walked off. It was apparent that he wasnt interested in pleasing the "customers", just his pockets. In my eyes everything should be right to create that special atmosphere at a soul nite, considering the room, the floor, the bar service, the people, good organisation and off cource appreciation for the people that pay for the evening. ok Gemma.. we had a nite of different fortunes it seems....i must admit i too easily look past the blemishes, the floor for one, it was never going to be the best, and a bit of talc made it toooooo slippery, and yes we travelled with a very open but slightly worried mind...and to be honest wondering if i had got it wrong...could have gone to mexbro ?.... but i did enjioy it ..had a wonderfull time, wish you and your mate had too  oh well .... there is always next weekend eh !

Gemma go and supp 4 cans of Special Brew, sleep and forget last night ever happend. For those that patronised the casino we all have memorys, I have some that make me tingle all over.

It was NEVER ever going to be the night that folk wanted it to be as dancing in a shopping centre no matter where it is will never work.

As for having the night at the Kings Hall in Stoke would they have a Torch Revival/Reunion night in Wigan?

Ps...did anyone play the Jades-I'm where its at? every time that record get playes I get flashbacks some so vivid I get a lump in the throat...The Casino was a very, very special place let it R.I.P, it's gone.

I think you would have to have your imagination working overtime , Plus a visit to a really special kinda Dealer to make that happen

see y'all soon

Oh and I bet the bogs wernt swimmin in two inches of P*ss either ..... see told you it couldnt be done

Jon,how long have we known each other....45,46,47 years ? you know me well enough to know i dont complain about owt ! Its the fact that we bought vip tickets to just try and give the girls, and originally you were in the equation,a little taster of what our youth was like.

we are at an age were we can pick and choose an event to attend, and it was on this basis that we went,ok it was a shopping mall and yes the music was spot on (thank god for Dave Evison and thanks for taking the time to talk to us) but Mr Winstanlys attitude towards us was just a shrug of the shoulders after Sue confronted him, with no explanation about why we weren,t treated to what was offered beforehand.

OK thats it,,,,went, done it,put it down to experience.....................but next time pull me to one side and have a word.Stroll on Prestatyn
