Hi all,

Not sure if this is the right sub-forum to post on, but is is regarding events (future ones)

As some will know I dj and run mixed era soul events (old and new soul and other stuff...)

We are considering some Northern and 60s Soul specific one off events and just want to find out how many of you would be interested in attending.

These would likely to be held at Hobgoblin, N1 on Sundays from Midday till Midnight - an alldayer if you like (yea i know starts midday lol)

There's good parking round there so we are thinking of incorperating a scooter element to this too.

Please post in this thread if you would be interested in attending such an occasional event in N1 and we will make the arrangements

Many thanks

Paul Aaaron,

Keep The Faith

Hi,

I am sure some of us will be interested in coming down from Walthamstow, only a few stops on the Victoria Line (dont make it the Sunday after our Walls of Heartache night - too old for going out two nights running)

Dont know your other events, so whats your format - vinyl, orignal vinyl etc

Hi D & M,

Thanks for the interest.

D - format for this event would be vinyl and CDs.

My other events are a mix of new and old soul with contemporary live acts performing also.

To any stallholders out there...

We would be able to offer stall space to anyone interested in selling records, clothing etc.

Yes - please do add any London northern dates to avoid (ie clash of dates or big nights the night before)

I know how the wrong timing of events can "halve the vote" at the door so to speak.

What are the dates of your events? and are they on a regular partern ie: every first saturday of the month etc.

I will avoid those dates if so if I can.

Also because it's a Sunday this is why we would have an early day / afternoon start.

Thanks again, Paul

If you really want advice - leave the CD's in your car. shades.gif

If you drastically change your music policy I might be interested, if you don't, well I wouldn't worry about clashing with any established do's.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

"STOLEN HOURS" 1st Anniversary, MARGATE 24th NOVEMBER.

2 Rooms + Accomodation + Free unissued Vinyl (first 100 tickets)

Where's the Hobgoblin? Angel?

I'd be interested!

I'm north London.

Hi Macke.

The Hobgoblin is closest to Holloway Road Tube. On the opposite side of the road, back towards Nags Head (away from Highbury corner). If you get as far as Waitrose you've gone too far.

Apologies if the pub has relocated, as they tend to do quite frequently in that part of the world.

As said - the music policy for these occasional events will be Northern Soul & 60s Soul.

Just to re-itterate these events wont be the same as my other events that have Soul from all era's on.

I can confirm CDs and vinyl will be used :D , i know some purists are not keen on that, but we will be consentrating on the music content of the night being good, not the format in which it's played.

Thanks for the views though, will keep you informed.

Thanks for the comments Mickie,

But I just need to redirect people re: Address and which Hobgoblin this is.

This is NOT the Hobgoblin previously situated in Holloway Rd.

I believe that Holloway Rd Hobgoblin is now called "The Study".

I know it's confusing as that part of Holloway Rd is technically in Islington (or the Islington borough at least).

A bit of background info on the Hobgoblin, Angel, Islington...

Till a few months ago the venue was called "The Jay Cubed". Although unusual it was a better and more distinct name IMO.

However, the owners of the Venue own a chain of bars & pubs and also the drink brand "Hobgoblin" this is why they changed the name in line with that brand etc.

Apparently more lettering will be going up outside the bar so it reads "Hobgoblin Angel" then we will be changing our flyers etc to say Hobgoblin Angel to match that.

It's an easy mistake to make confusing it with the previous Holloway Rd pub - but so no one turns up at the wrong address - here is the Address:

Hobgoblin (formerly 'The Jay Cubed')

73 White Lion Street

Angel, Islington,

London

N1 9PF

nearest tube: Angel (120 Meters away).

White Lion Street is virtually opposite Angel Tube.

Chapel Market is the road behind it.

Easy to find and also Parking near by after weekday restrictions end.

More info on this as we get it on this one.

It's likely we will try a one off and see how that goes and if there's enough demand we will make it a monthly or Bi-Monthly event.

But I will do my best to clearly label it so it does what it says on the tin as I know some are particular about era's, vinyl, etc., etc.

I can confirm for now this won't be a contempory Soul event.

Thanks again for the comments.

Oh, dear..............DJ's with no tunes................... & no money to hire the DJ's that have, if you are going to do it at least do it properly, by playing from CD you are alienating a large proportion of your potential audience & lets pleassssssssssse not go into all that boring, its musical content blah, blah, the music should be played from original format at a promotion, play it off what you like at home..............not my intention to be negative, so I apologise, but really, what is the point if you are going to play from CD.

^ thanks for the opinions, I know there is a sizable section who feel the same as you.

I don't want to go down the inevitable discussions on the Vinyl argument, but I accept your points.

My views one vinyl are I have walls and walls of vinyl, having come from a time when Vinyl was the main format (and largely best and widely available medium then) I have seen a lot of other formats too (cassette, 8 track reel to reel, Dat, CD etc.)

From my experience of running events it's mainly the DJs that are concerned with the format - for the people who want to go and dance to the tunes and music style they like - I have found it's not that important as long as they are happy with the music being played.

I accept Northern Soul specifically has a very strong and large "Collectors" following who also may be concerned with this too.

All i really want to do here is see how many people would like this event.

From the start I am making it clear what we are intending so people are not dissappointed if vinyl only is of paramount importance to them.

There is several new generations who have come into Northern Soul who I believe are also less concerned with the formats.

& indeed this event wont claim to have the top people or try and replicate the wigan casino down to every last detail.

On my own Keep The Faith events I have made a point of hiring no DJs on their BPM mixing skills or format choices - it really is about the tunes for me.

The event(s) will be to play the tunes for people into the music.

If the event grows we may well have some guests who are respected on the scene, and as said I am welcoming people setting up stalls and will give them stall space for free on the events - so vinyl is ver much welcome, just not the centre of what we are doing or planning for these events.

Thanks again,

Paul

"Oh, dear..............DJ's with no tunes................... "

PS - i am puzzled by this comment? how do you know the DJs have no tunes?

format doesnt equal guarenteed tunes IMO.

I could have a house full of rare Northern Soul on vinyl (only 1 copy found in the world etc) - but that rarity to me doesn't make a good tune automatically.

"& no money to hire the DJ's that have."

Highly paid DJs doesnt equal quality either IMO.

FYI a lot of my motivation in general for DJing, doing radio and promoting events is because I have been completely dissatisfied with the DJ culture here in the UK and also our Club culture - going way beyond Northern Soul.

I hated the "Superstar DJ era" of the 90s and I believe it played a large part in the dismal night life / night club scenes we have in London.

I also believe the pre-occupation with BPM mixing and to a lesser extent Vinyl format also distorted the values in the music away from content and into technique, DJ worship and other side issues.

I hope that sheds some light on where I am coming from with organising events.

& as said I will continue to label the events correctly so no one turns up expecting those aspects.

Thanks again, Paul.
