Manship Auction Vs Manship Price Guide

Everytime John Manship auctions a record he reduces the authority of his price guides. Discuss. whistling.gif

Don't get me wrong with this post, John Manship has always come good for me with his auctions, both when I win stuff at low prices (yes it does happen!) and when I have sold stuff through him. He's also always been very helpful to me with information about records, even ones I am not buying off him.

This post is in no way a swipe at him, as he has done nothing but good for me! :)

Read post James but as I don't see JM's book as an authority.... only as what it is.... a guide.... then again that's not the case with some when he publishes the latest price from his auctions as a guide price rather than a more reasonable one.... nothing else to it than that really sleep3.gif:) ....

I'm being too serious for a Monday after a weekender. Bugger, wish I could get rid of this hang over, and my guts hurt.

Not really mate.... I know some people do use the "guide" as an "authority" on what a record is worth....

How about an "hair of the dog" whistling.gif .... might work :) ....

As an independent, Mr Trouble correctly states the widely held view that the Pigs are not a big club.

I found it an interesting concept, that by auctioning more and more records he is making his price guide less relevent.

I would have thought that a top dealer like John Manship would benifit from stable prices, which could be why he started his price guides in the first place? By auctioning records he encourages price volatility.

hair of the dog sounds a good idea, but I'm not sure my blistered feet can carry me to the pub! sleep3.gif

Although if the 'market' is on the up at the moment, the auctions could be a good way to get prices up, and when things calm down a bit you can reduce the number of auctions (to disguise any possible slow down in the market) and stabalise prices at a higher level with new price guides? whistling.gif

I put it down to the boom in prices of some of the amounts stuff goes for on eBay these days.... have noticed over the months that more of what I'd think was set sale items being put on his auction site.... not just him but people who pass him stuff to sell.... his auction end prices tell their own story on some items.... people still willing to pay big bucks often over his "guide" price.... so with that in mind I can see why he, and others who sell through him, put stuff on there rather than as a set sale thing....

But can they carry you to the fridge.... or is that bare....

Apart from the mega rarities and specialist items (eg French EP's) the majority of auction items are the latest 'biggies' getting played at venues. Always going to get inflated prices on current spins. Always have in the past.

James,

And there's the talk of his planned reverse auctions - he sets a price and lets the clock start ticking. the more the clock ticks, the more the price drops. and it's all down to who's nerve holds in hanging out for the bargain.

now thats one to flare up a few ulcers whistling.gif

a plan to get rid of some stock apparently

Thanks for the info.

The reason that United are called The Pigs is because they play in shirts that look like streaky bacon. Bizarrely they were also cursed with retatrds as their core support, thats why they called Wednesday fans pigs about 25 years ago. Not very bright but what can you expect from a pig but a grunt?

Price Guide = What John think's it's worth

Auction = What some punter is willing to pay.

End.
