Soul Tattoos, What Does Your Say?

i remember years ago some stoke guys had the black fist with wigan casino rules o.k around it, the problem was the tattoo guy really didnt get it, he spelt wigan as wagan on all of them and they never realised till they got home :P

OK lets get this right  The tattoos were done in Plymouth,Aug 74 by a back street tattooist came by the name of Phil(Huge man), who plied his trade "marking"the Navy lads.

Been at the time on holiday in Newquey it seemed a good idea to pop over to Plymouth to get the said tattoos. So one bright(might not be the appropiate word to use in this thread  ) sunny morning both myself and Morgan my good freind at the time landed in Plymouth.

We then set about the said streets to find a tattooist to suit our needs. First shop we came to we popped our heads round the door and asked the big question "aup duck cust reproduce this on us arm" in our best Stokie accent. To which he replied %$£^ &*^ )(*& in and £"$ %^^$ down. (translated come on in and sit the sen down) Not wanting to up set the very nice 6foot 10inch 25 stone gentleman we did.

Whats want lads said he. can you copy the design from this badge but put WIGAN instead of the Torch, so reading WIGAN CASINO (top line) RIGHT ON (bottom line) yes said he, roll up your sleeve and of he went never saying a word. To say it hurt would be a understatment, so with hand bridged over me forhead he carried on. Only looking at what he was doing for the breifest of moments, to much ink and blood to see to much, so thinking every thing is ok he carried on.

On finishing he said there you go all done covering it with a bandage told me to leave the bandage on for a day and keep it clean. absolutley delighted he had done i could not wait to get out of the chair so that Morgan could get his done.

When we were both done we payed and left.Walking back to the train station like two peacocks with our newly gotten plumage, all still covered up to keep it clean like the nice man had told us to do.Once on the train there was talk of "do you think we are the first to get a tattoo like this"and"i cannot wait to show the others" and the "Wigan lads will love this ".

After getting back to the camp site we just could not wait to take a look, off came the bandages F£$%^G B%^^KS the fat t***s put WAGIN CASSINNO WRIGHT ON not only on mine but on Morgan too :D

It took days for us to tell anyone else but it had to be done.Ribbing that would be an under statement.

PS I left Cheddelton mental hospital last week after34 years

Thanks to Dave Everson ive been reminded of it at every Stoke home game ive seen him at since.

Ric tic is that you Ian Popple?

Nice one! biggrin.gif

I recall many, many moons ago - a good friend of mine went to get an obligatory Northern Soul fist tattooed on the top of her arm. On first revealing it to me, still fresh, we both thought that it looked all right...but...on the second glance I suddenly noticed a slight problem...it had five fingers and a thumb. Oh dear! How do you break that gently to a good friend?!

Never had a tattoo, but if I had it would have to be something related to the music I love, so I am curious to know what others have had (but not where  ) have you had song titles, artists names?

Mine,s just a boring SOUL done in indian ink at school on left arm in 1969, now fading with time.

  • 3 years later...

A black Soul Fist on my left forearm, with the date I met my partner scribed beneath it...'Heaven must have sent you' above my eldest daughter's name on my right inside arm, being it has always been her favourite record since she was a little girl... :hatsoff2:

I've been designing a tattoo for a bit now, used an owl I found which I've pipped on the Birmingham background from the old Out Rigger flyers, so its Brum circa 84, obviously I'm from Birmingham...no where finished but its allot of fun doing it, even if I decide to shelve it all together and not bother, which I might having read the above horror stories.

Good selection of alternative owls as well, I like the ones that smoking..

Not strictly on topic but on the subject of tattoos ...round our way in the 70's there was a bloke called Dill Dudding who fancied himself as a bit of a Hells Angel (never had a motorcycle or anything like that)

Anyway he had a tatoo of a Swastika on his face which ,because he'd done it himself in a mirror, was back to front and was in fact the Buddhist symbol for peace and prosperity.I don't suppose he was that bothered ...f*** the future eh Dill

Was the Guy from Grantham by chance, i remember a lad from round Town who had one just like that, couldn't understand why for the life of me.

I've got a couple of Soul related Tattoos on the inside of my forarms, inspired by Junior Walker.

Left Arm has "Nothing But Soul" By Junior walker & the Allstars put onto a line of music with stars & notes mixed in as well as the SOUL label name, date which was 1966, the yr i was born incidently & record Number. Theres also a little figure playing the Sax.

On the right arm theres a banner running down my arm with the words "How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You," again with Stars, Notes & a music sign dropped in behind the banner.

How sweet is probably my fav Motown record of all time & nothing But Soul Sort of sums it all up really.

looking at some stage to get an image of a soul singer doing his thing further up my arm some time this yr hopefully

I never really fancied one myself.......but if i did, i would find it hard to pick something that i would want forever, my fav record changes depending on what mood im in & i love all kinds of music from the 20s to the 60s.......there is only one thing i can think of that i would want to keep forever & that's my cat Mr. Tinkles, lol......

I must just say that i have enjoyed looking at all the various designs on here.......but im afraid Dundedavie has still won the contest for the best one's....fantastic design's.

I did some myself on my left arm when i was 14, it said Northern Soul - Ian - OK on 3 lines on a bit of a funny angle !!, my folks went balistic so off i went to Rhyl and paid £4 to have it covered with an eagle that looked 10 times worse !! needless to say my folks went even more balistic !!

years later i sat in a tattoo shop in London having a panther fighting a snake on my right arm to match things up and he had just finished the panther when then old bill marched in and closed the shop due to a bomb threat !! Never did get it finished lol

Had a horse done on the Isle Of man inside right arm then 4 years later had the horses ears added while out in Belize, also have the ex wifes name on my ass so everytime i take a dump i think of her lol.

so now at the tender age of almost 53 i am still undecided on what NS tattoo to have, it's going to get done but what to get i have no idea yet !!!

Did have my Dad's initials & dates put on my back in Skeggy last Sept and boy did i suffer !!, it went all manky and oozed puss and white crap for months, only just settled down to normal !!

Ian.

Hate Tattoo's Especially when they cram them all on one arm , to the extent it looks like a Graffiti vandalised S*ithouse wall

And even worse on the "Older generation" IMO LoL

"tramp stamps are a real turnoff" !

Got quite a few

northern soul on left forearm, done about '84ish

long after tonight is all over on inside left arm

tamla motown, design off british label, right forearm

life is just a precious minute inside right arm

wigan casino all-niter, nite owl design on right shoulder

northern soul probably the best music in the world on right calf, same design as off the label on the lager bottle

i've got MFSB on top of my right arm as it fits in with my family as i've got one brother and one sister and of course ma and pa.

top of left arm i had SWFC done years ago, but if anyone asks me now, it stands for Stevie Wonder Fan Club.

allways loved tattoos, wish i could have more, but due to illness i can't.

All the best, Barry, KGB, KTF.

I wasn't being nasty; it's a well known fact that tattoo's fade with repeated exposure to daylight/sun. Don't read 'bitch' into everything I write.
