LP TRAX ET AL ON PLAYLISTS?

I think there has been a little debate on djs playing tunes from LPs.As always there will be mixed opinions as to acceptability on the scene, particularly as some sounds are album track only. Personally dont have a prob with playing tracks from Lps (not compilations as such) but e.g. Tempests - Someday. I also recently acquired demo Lp Laverne Baker containing the classic version of 'I'm The One To Do It' - try stopping me from spinning that!! The only problem with LP tracks is sometimes they can be a bit low and need a sudden surge of volume from the decks (oops! there goes that amp again!). Would like to hear other peoples opinions on this and also on playing legit 'issues' on Kent etc labels e.g. Little Ann, and other previously unreleased tunes (incl. test pressings). p.s Without having any snipe at any DJs!!!!!!!

Have no problems whatsoever with lp tracks being played and inc. many myself in my set at the Plinston and Fingers is always trying to play a 100% LP only set when he's behind the decks and more power to him. As a soul lover I have no problems with legal reissues either (Kent & Grapevine for example) as I am at the stage where it's the music that is all important and getting it out there to the masses (Have been and am still a collecter though) and I am happy to spin a rare original (Allen Sisters, John Wesley, Mind & Matter et all) alongside a Grapevine release of True Image, Eddie Holman unissued gem, Little Ann and so on.

It doesn't matter if it comes from a 45, LP or even CD - if that's the format it's on and it's a great SOUL tune - then it gets played!

(I have a curent Plinston Monster that is a CD only track and no-one cares about the fact it's a CD.)

TheBigO

Current Plinston LP spins inc: Sam Dees U/I version of 'Lonely..'; Mary Saxton 'Losing Control'; Various Ace Spectrun tracks off all the LP's; Beres Hammond 'Various'; Countless Motown gems and Little Mama 'Barefootin' (CD Only).

Some nice stuff there BigO. Its got to be said that playing tarcks from LPs (and CD only tracks) is widely accepted and does provide with an extra means of getting hold of certain tunes unavailable or even unaffordable or otherwise on 45.

Didnt know Losing Control was on an album mate.

Grant the Mary Saxton Lp came out canadian Beechwood, some other nice tracks on lp as well.

I wish more dJ's would go out and dub unissued tracks from all the latest cd's. Kent always have a few good unissued tracks on most releases. When i was at the CSC with Flynny we were always getting stuff cut and playing it,....don't ever here this kinda stuff played by any of the allnighter dj's. The odd grapevine acetate maybe but thats about it.

I do look at the play lists from dj's now and never seem to see anything from the current cd releases. The cd's are a great source for unissued material and dj's should be on there toes..... its also a cheap way to getting a great new original 6ts recording.

Thanks for the info on Mary Saxton, I'll keep my eyes open for that one, or have I more chance plattin' fog mate. I am interested in your commentings re dubbing unissued sounds from CDs - how did u go about that - or is it top secret?

If I paid good money to go to a soul do where so-called DJs were playing stuff from compilation CDs, i'd ask for my money back at the least - at most I'd stick the fruits of their trip to Tower Records where the sun don't shine. Keep yer comps at home, amateurs.

I do not think the point of this debate is about compilation cds. the point of the debate is about playing album tracks, not from compilation albums, but from original lps such as Danny Wagner,Rufus Lumley, Mary Saxton as mentioned above et al. What Greg is getting at is that is healthy for the scene to be playing unissued sounds from Cds - a sound that has never been pressed on vinyl, taken straight from some mastertape probably onto CD. I dont think for minute that he means lets all play tracks from say tHE tWISTED wHEEL sTORY vOL 2 - DO YOU ?!

Album tracks have and always will be part of a DJ's bag of tricks and quite right too. Spinning unissued CD tracks and compilations? Hmmmm. Can't really see how that's okay. Bit like going to visit the National Gallery and it's full of colour photcopies, isn't it? Apart from anything else it's riding to DJ glory on the back of someone else's graft - tracking down the unreleased cut, putting a compilation together, getting rights permission and getting it put out on sale. Some individual going on stage with the fruits of an HMV record token who gets a round of applause for playing, say, Lorraine C's You Only Live Twice, is a fraud, frankly.

See what u r saying dave. in nearly all places i've djd at there hasnt been a cd facility whether u wanted to play cds or not, and certainly the regular monthly soul nite i dj at we dont use cd's. i suppose cd trax are dubbed onto vinyl for that reason maybe? dunno never done it or got knowledge to do it - asking greg howits done purely for educational reasons mate. (anyway anything interesting or exclusive on a cd would have been long sorted b4 i got round to getting hold of a copy!!)

oh dear the poor guest who won't sign his real name is a bit upset...yawn! oh let me get you a bottle and a dummy...LOL. Come on matey chill out and relax its just friends having a debate, i couldn't care less if you stayed or walked.

If you read the post you would see that i was talking about unissued material. If you just go to hear original pressed records then fair enough but some people like to hear new unissued things and cds are providing that more than any other source. Its is the music remember.

A dj is hired to entertain the dancefloor and be imaginative where you can. Yes i say again if venues have the equipment then play the cd who gives a f8ck its the song that matters.

Now again to nappy boy/girl guest who uses the word Amateur...please explain why you would throw your toys out of the pram because a dj played an unissued track from a cd? Richard had been doing it for years at the Ritz. But is it ok if they get a cut on a dub plate (thats an acetate in lay mans terms)? and would you also would leave cause the dub was played? if so then you better get your coat and leave the CSC,100club,Ritz,Lowton,drunken Monkey etc.

hey nothing wrong in signing your name you know ...well at least your mother /dad was proud of it. Guys the person will probably sign it joe bloggs from ten buck two LOL

Well said again greg. If posts were read properly we wouldnt be going down the lines of this 'fraud' b******s again (refer to the boring bootleg posts that went on and on!!). No-one has mentioned playing stuff from comp. cd's!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yep u r right tht is too easy ... but please think about the subject in hand, dont veer off at a tangent. PLEASE.

Hi Elgee

can't see how cd's would be ok eh!! cd's have taken over from lps for years now as we all know. If Adey croadsell comes to me and says greg i got this cd and theres an unissued track on there thats brilliant will you give it a spin? too right i will. How do you think Spencer wiggins was found? it was found and cut from a cd just like many unissued monsters.

If no one had them cut we would never had heard them tracks played out. If you think about alot of the monster tracks spun last year then you'll find most were unissued and got spun on dubs ...ex mayfied singers, moses smith, temptones, hytones etc. you canot starve people from quality unheard material cause it never got a vinyl pressing. But then again what do i know! LOL

have a good w-end mate

hey grant

No of course i didn't mean playing that kinda comp lp's. i think i've only played one boot in my life and that was john and the weirdest on tie...then again theres a few big boys who also do that i can tell ya. i dj'd with a very well known face (top dj) who played a dub of Betty wilson cause he couldn't find an original. Don't be fooled that all the dj's play by the rules as they don't. i see what you r saying about sticking to the subject of lps.

take care

I dont see what all the fuss is about. Crumbs, I would not Jump up an down and get all hot and bothered if a reputible DJ played the odd unissued track from a CD or stuck it on an acetate. Whats the problem here? We are denying ourselves the pleasure of this great music with this very arrogant and selfish train of thought.

How would the deceased Freddie Butler feel, if we were to deny him the respect of a couple of his LP tracks? we dont have the arrogant and self righteous 'God' like status to refuse a wonderful track like Deon Jacksons 'sun'(just because its not on original acetate). Oh I forgot, the 25 mammy boy anoraks who do more harm than good may whisper to one another. Love the music and not the dumbness of a petty thought that shows no respect to the artists that have given us everything.

Grow up

Guest in town Mikey

If DJs didnt play LP tracks then I might never have heard Rufus Lumley_Stronger than me. It has been my fave record for the past 25 years. And Tempests is in my top ten Stafford tracks.

LPs are a genuine release by a label. If that track was never released as a single for whatever reason, why should the dancefloor be deprived.

As for frauds Greg I think the guy was outing you as a Man Utd fan really!!

Well at least nobody's turned up on the decks of the 100 Club recently with that lost gem 'Casino Classics vol 1' and its interesting collection of little-played and, indeed, almost forgotten tracks. Yours in impending terror of 'Joe 90' - El GP. And let's all have a good weekend.
