The chap who plays (or maybe played, if he's not in it anymore) 'Bob Hope' in 'Emmerdale' is known to collect, and goes to dances. I saw him at the Jackie Ross/Syl Johnson show in Wakefield a couple of years back so I can back his claims up with personal evidence!

Away from soul, the former Cricketer Derek Pringle has a vast reggae collection. I often bumped into him in shops like "Reggae Revive" in the early 90s, buying obscure mid 70s roots tunes...

Not trying to be funny, but how many of these bods that 'popped in' were genuine afficiandos? And how many were just there for a late drink or to see what all the fuss is about?

For example I am reliably informed by someone who knows her that Anna Ford was never into northern, despite being "photo'd" in The Casino. Same thing with Freddie Starr I think.

All these indie / punk band members though?

As an aside I was watching a programme on London last night in the "ITV versus Eastenders" slot and that horrible weird geek that does the tax adverts was warbling on about the 100 Club. Mentioned it's jazz routes and it then having a new lease of life for punk / indie. No mention of it holding northern nights for nearly 30 years typical!

An amount of the posts I have read seem to be posts about famous people that have just recognised Northern - they don't really count - They don't - I bought a Culture Club record once , but I don't really hope that because of that I will be held up on a CC message board as someone who was prevalent in keeping old BG in dresses.

Is Stu Mc more true to NS tyhan KR because he has the option to spread the word over the Radio - I'm not sure.

It's about how YOU see it, live with it...and ultimaltely use it to live your life.

In the 70s he ran a mobile round the Coventry area playing soul, wrote a few articles about the (then new) Philly Sound, and then popped up in a documentary a few years ago about NS talking about miners holding hands as they danced at Wigan - must confess I never saw that going on . This to me makes him a one time fan.

Of course I don't know what he has in his living room by the record player, and it may well be some soulful delights......but these days Pete is more interested in model railways, and runs a company that makes them.

I am sure some of those lads on the northern railways circuit could fill in the blanks - Steve M, Sean etc?

I might need some help on this, but I remember seeing an article somewhere, about a top flight goalkeeper, (Might have been with Forest?).

He was photographed with his wife and a collection of 45s and LPs. All of them Motown or Northern.

It doesn't really surprise me Malc as I doubt that Ms Jones herself attaches a lot of importance to her Uptown recordings.

Some of these artists can't even remember cutting these tracks or are even a little dismissive of them. A good example is Garnett Mimms in TSWONS, 'it was one of those Ragavoy things'

& even Marvin Gaye, who apparently didn't want to spend the rest of his life 'shaking his ass', looking for witnesses.

When you're Marvin Gaye & have something to say, I can sort of understand that.

But then again, it has to be said that these two were established artists & not also rans.

If I'm not wrong, Bolan was a mod who later took too much acid got consumed by all that wizards, elves & goblins crap. The night Gloria appeared at St.Ives I didn't go & Bolan was rumoured to have played drums, but I think it's only a rumour. Can anyone confirm that?

it was "Bonehead", the drummer from Oasis who bought NS 45s. Didn't have a clue who he was until someone told me. Also the lead singer with B52's collects. He spent quite a bit on cheapies one dull afternoon

He's been down to NS do's in Brighton a few times, never stays that long though, maybe our dos are cr*p!

Think he quite likes the music, he asked me to play The Elgins - 'Heaven must have sent you' at one Do, think i remember him saying it was his fave track.

I know Steve (fellow Brightonian) very well, he doesn't go to NS dos but does like 6ts Soul music pretty much across the board, he spends a lot of his time recording still, really nice chap.

I once read an article that the late Ian Curtis of manchester band Joy Division was a fan, 'apparently' the track on the Still LP called The Kill is their version of Keep On Keeping On by NF Porter....its sounds f#*k all like it.

As for Paul Daniels being a fan.....he's reportedly been heard telling his wife 'You'll like this, but not a lot'

Dunno about it being on here before, but 'The Kill' (keep on keeping on, hybrid version) was produced by Martin Hannet & as Ian Curtis died in May 1980 with the album being released very soon thereafter I would think it very unlikely that RS had anyting to do with it.....unless of course this was way after Ian Curtis hung himself on 'yet another' Joy Division 'Let's make money out of him 'cause he's dead' album.
