Bazm
Hi All, Just thought i'd post with a brief overview/review of Lowton last Friday. I'll leave it the Joan and the guys to fill you in on the DDA cause I spent most of my time in the main room on Friday, just to say though it was great having them back doing what they do, in their adopted home (the back room at Lowton) after an extensive world tour First off Kev McQue, a guy with great taste, did an extended early doors set which allowed him the flex his musical muscles which he did very effectively, with many people passing comment on his selections. Just waiting on a playlist from him which i'll post up later. Next on was Glenn Brierly, who many of you will know from his record stall at Lowton, Brighouse and Prestwich to name a few. Glenn is another who likes to throw in some left fielders from is extensive UK collection and some sounds from the Twisted Wheel. Friday was no exception with Jess and James, Ray Anthony and the Blendells sounding very good, along side the likes of Danny White, Little Richard, Jimmy Hughes and Spencer Wiggins and with the room now filling up Glenn had the dance floor filling up nicely. Next up was the omnipresent Dave Rivers. I asked him where he'd been recently and the reply was "everywhere" which made me smile cause I knew it was a simple fact that Dave had indeed been to pretty much all of the bigger gigs in the North West over the last month or so. So with that said Dave gave us a cross section of some of the records being played around the venues at the moment including Voices Incorporated, Freddie Scott, Holliwood Flames and two of my all time favourites Yvonne Vernee and Gloria Howell. By now the room had filled up nicely with over 200 in and the floor was very busy. Next it was my turn and by this time I'd amassed quite a few requests so it was onward and upward with Jimmy Seals, George Kirby, Anne Heywood, John Bowie, Tony Clarke, Parliaments, Lana and the Deltanetts (for Mike Cog) Al Gardner (for Les) and The Magnetics. A couple of bits being featured at the mo and getting great reaction inclued Rosco Gordon (bait) Perk Lee and Gladys Tyler (Bitty Girl) finishing with Clarence Jackson and The Volumes. Really enjoyed playing on Friday and hopefully (as it seemed) everybody was having a good night. That just left the final hour to Karl Rhodes, a man with impeccable taste in music and who delivered in bucket loads and who kept the floor filled till the witching hour of 2am. I'll let Karl fill in the blanks with what he can remember from both rooms later. Thanks to everyone who came to Lowton and the DDa on Friday great to see Steve T, Chico and Mark from Funky Feet Records (cant wait for the website guys) Ian C, Jayne and Shaun, Mal, Flanny and Debs, Mike and Janet, Kev B and all the Warrington crew Hope to see you all on Jan 11th 2008 when Mr Murphy will be back from his vaccation in the U S of A Edited December 17, 2007 by BazM Link to comment

Paul-s
WOW. What a weekend! Friday was exceptional, words really cannot describe the night. Kev Cane, superb sets and loads of beautiful tunes. Even better the guy plays LOADS of £5 and £10 tunes, that absolutely blow the expensive ones away! Proving that you dont need to be a millionaire to be a TOP dj!! You Just need a soul! Talking of which....Kev Johnson..WELL, this man excelled himself, absolutely fantastic sets, spot on . I love the guy! Joan, is flying at the moment! suprise tunes everytime ive seen her lately! Im proud to have her as my legal guardian! And Karl, well, he was doing great spots, BUT then disappeared into the main room at 1am! We can't have that again. I missed his mischievious soul! The room was not packed with people. BUT the people in there (some had travelled from Scotland), packed it with SOUL! One of the best nights for me! Thanks to ALL who came. FACT, you dont have to be the "biggest this and best that" or have "30 dj's", or categorize and sub categorize your music into genres and 3 or 4 rooms! ALL you need is inventive and spontaneous people and dj's....who want to relax, have fun and explore! No ego's or pretention. I loved it! Thanks. Link to comment
Val (Chunky)
This was the first time I had attended Lowton. I must have spent 95% of the night in the DDA room. Well what can I say......it was absolutely brilliant, the music was top notch, the atmosphere was great and full of friendly people. I'm not gonna' praise any DJ in particular as I thought they all played fantastic records, my wants list has certainly grown. Give yourselves a big pat on the back lads & lasses. I'll definitely be back...... Link to comment

First visit to the DDA and it was even better than what Baz and Gaz had described. There is a genuine warm and hospitable feel about the place but thats hardly suprising with the likes of Joan, Paul, Karl and Debbie running the show. There is no politics, bullshit or ego,s to contend with. There were some rare tunes played but without compromising quality. Quality was the name of the game where the underplayed and even unplayed are met with even more enthusiasm and appreciation than some of the better known quality sounds. I think it was Paul who played The Holidays "I,ll love you forever". Ill be honest and say that I have never heard It played out at a venue before and I challenge anybody to say that it isn,t out of the top drawer, hairs on the back of the neck stuff. Kev played Bobby Sansom " Don,t leave" and Sandra Richardson "Stay here with me", both in need of more venue action, straight from the top drawer again and completely different records. I could go on but most people have been around long enough to get the drift. It was also great to catch up with the likes of Jock O,conner among others, one of the nicest blokes on the scene and still mad keen for it. The DDA is a diamond that must be preserved. I followed the wrong car for 20 miles thinking it was Gaz's Golf and didn't realise until we ended up on an Industrial Estate in South Manchester and about 12 junctions from where we should have been. Not to worry, we arrived in the car park at 9-27 and the first record was on the decks at exactly 9.30 !!!! I love meeting the DDA lot , as soon as you walk in they are straight over to greet you with big smiles and tons of enthusiasm that makes it all worthwhile. I can't remember all of what I played but tried a few mid tempo spins first off , chucked in a bit of x-over, some underplayed 70's and finished with a few 60's Stafford and Detroit gems. 1st Spot Howard Tate - Half A Man Magnificent 7 - Never Will I Make My Baby Cry Kenny Young - Aint It Funny What Love Can Do The Intentions - Don't Forget That I Love You The Ultimations - Would I Do It Over Bobby Sansom - Don't Leave Jackey Beavers - Lover Come Back The Pretenders - A Broken Heart Cries Sandra Richardson - Stay Here With Me Marva Whitney - Ball Of Fire The Casanova Two - We Got To Keep On 2nd Spot Jesse Fisher - Your Not Loving A Beginner Bobby Foster - If You Ever Need A Friend Rotations - I Can't Find Her The Clovers - Try My Lovin On You Occassions - There's No You Marke Jackson - Since You've Been My Girl Jackson Brothers - I Gotta Hear It From You Mr. Caldwell - Love Bandit The Vontastics - Never Let Your Love Grow Cold The Hesitations - We Can Do It The Four Sonics - Easier Said Than Done Johnny Dixon - Where Are You The Hesitations - That's What Love Is A big THANK YOU again to Joan, Karl and Paul for inviting us down to Lowton to spin a few it was an honour and a pleasure to be there on Friday guys. Hi Kev, it was great to have you lads playing on Fri. Always top draw stuff from you lads. When we were in Seattle last month I had a chat with Mr. J. J. Barnes about the Holidays track. I had been told it was J. J. Barnes, Steve Mancha and Edwin Starr. But he put me right telling me that Golden World asked all three to sing it separately, after doing so they chose the Edwin Starr one. So the lead on this track is actually Edwin Starr. Just a bit of trivial information, nice to know though. It's a great tune and should get more plays. All the best Karl Link to comment
