Just tuned in to listen to the Supremes story repeat on BBC Radio 2 website and noticed a Northern Soul 2 hour programme by Mary Fox from Radio Stoke which is also a repeat of tonights earlier show. Thumbs up to Radio 2, at least they are trying to get the best music played at long last

Radio 2 has always had a leaning towards soul music in general Frankie, well more so than the other BBC stations anyway, keep listening

I have been listening to the re-run of this in Canada on the internet for a few months now. She plays a lot of oldies, youth club stuff but then she does play a lot of some shite as well.

The skip 5 minute button is a great invention.

The last few weeks she has been off and some other bloke has been playing a lot of quality oldies.

Mary's show runs every friday evening on BBC Radio Stoke from 7.00 p.m. - 9.00 p.m.

She plays mainly Northern and Motown, with a sprinkling of other soul stuff, and has local DJs and collectors on as a guest each week to play their fav 3 tunes.

She also advertises local soul events etc, which has helped local events boost attendance figures.

She's a good ol' girl with a heart of gold.

The other bloke who has presented her show when she is on holiday is Nick Marshall, who has been on the Northern scene for many years.

Mary Fox is a radio presenter landed with a Northern Soul show,. She has her own likes and certainly her audience has their prefernces. I just wish I had her audience. It's not a show to listen into for the rarest of the rare but it bounces along. Some of her guests do play some rare stuff and she does play requests.

I've listened to this and it's not for anybody who owns more than a couple or Wigan Cds and a copy of the Big Wheel of Motown To be honest Russ's show on GMR is better..not so much the music (well the music is slightly better) , but mainly the good old giggle you get listening to it guessing how many times he can mention the Casino in one sentence. Mark Bicknell's show's the best IMO But hey, each to their own

Have to agree with above comments.

Whilst not wanting to sound too 'up my own a?*e' and snobby most of the 'returning soulies' in this area of the land are perfectly happy to listen to their youth club spins and fried chicken theme tunes on the wireless and particularly at local do's. Some of us however, are not.

Re. Mary Fox Show, Friday 7-9, I've listened to this from the start and am doing so right now. She tends to play the more popular Ns & Motown tracks, but has slipped in some class music, and a few unmentionables.

Someone on another thread asked what songs sum up Northern Soul.

On this weeks show Mary Played.

1, Billy Butler - The Right Track.

2, Dells - Run For Cover.

3, Jackie Wilson - The Who, Who, Song.

IMHO these 3 are spot on.

Mary is actually in charge of programming, scheduling and presentation on BBC Radio Stoke.

I think I am correct in believing that she instigated the inclusion of a Northern Soul show on Radio Stoke, and decided to present it herself.

In all fairness, she has always admitted to having little knowledge of the scene, and relies on input from guests, listeners and critics.

The music is usually basic, with a few gems thrown in now and again, but I personally would rather have a local radio show with that sort of playlist than none at all.

She will advertise local events, run freebie competitions and give every willing soulie the chance to go on air with their choice of 3 tracks and have their 15 minutes of fame (well maybe 7 or 8 minutes, but you get my point!)

She also has no political or biased views on the scene....which is refreshing in it's own right...

And not only is it available to Stoke listeners, log into BBC radio 2 website and you can hear a repeat of the show ( I found it via The Supremes Show), IMO any Northern Soul on the BBC is better than nothing
