Around 4th Avenue on the East Side there's a couple of places last time I was down in that part of town late last year....best thing is to look in Yellow Pages and see what looks interesting, and is NOT located in Greenwich Village.... THE SOUND LIBRARY is arguably the best 2nd hand shop in Manhattan. Frequented by the Hip-Hop crowd, they stock lots of original soul, funk, jazz & latin LPs. Not many 7"s though. Can be pricey, but I've found some great bits there over the years. ACADEMY RECORDS. Good selection of stuff in this 2nd hand store. I picked up a 12" booty of Tommy Stewart's "Bump & Hustle Music" last year for $4. All sorts of stuff in here. Lots of other stores, but many tend to focus on disco, so may not be your bag. Do you agree on Grenwich? - the last time I went there I was in a shop and the guy detected my accent and snapped "no northern soul" without working out what I might be looking for. He was in the process of selling "Fish ain't biting" on 7" to some heavy Def Jam type DJ guys for $50 or something ludicrous. At that point I made my excuses and left. At that point I made my excuses and left. link Yeah Steve, agree on Greenwich Village (i.e. West Village). Most of the stores in that area are either over-priced, or just rubbish. A lot of the stores in the East Village are more specialised to modern Black music - disco, funk, soul, hip-hop, jazz, latin, reggae. If you can appreciate stuff outside the typical Northern/Modern Soul boundaries as well, I'm sure you will find something good. As I tend to go for a lot of disco, it's great for me. Saying that though, I buy anything decent - soul, funk, latin, jazz, hip-hop, house and even rock. I have only been to NY a couple of times and I thought it was good for albums etc, yes pricy but then the day of cheap records is almost over I think we agree. I found that for a little bit less than you would pay here you would return with a decent amount, although you are right in that you are not going to get the big 70's albums as Americans are now chasing them. I also had the comment "no NorthernSoul" here, inoldies museum, but again if you are prepared ehre you will gert some nice general soul stuff (ballads etc). For West Village I assume you mean around Bleeker St etc, which I actually thought was okay, again pricy but enough interesting items. For disco 12" (the real stuff not the Bee Gees etc ) I think NY is good but you then have to compete with local collectors (Dance Tracks etc) but for Prelude/Salsoul type stuff it is there if you look around. I did have a couple of adresses in Brooklyn for shops allegedly full of soul but was told in our hotel not to go around these areas. Who knows. Some of my recommendations have already been mentioned, Bleeker St and around that area. Lots of little stores around lower east side 13th/2nd. Picked up a few nice bits of Northern last year and plenty of Jazz/Motown/Latin. Two tips: Don't tell anyone you're into Northern Soul as they are wise to the prices - 'gospel soul' works great for me. Keep looking. You never know who's just sold/bought a new collection - happens all the time and you might be in the right place at the right time. I diid get a few pieces but nothing spectacular apart from Ann Perry orig Ohio Players LP- I got about 20 12" and Lps Did get a Esther williams twelve inch- You gotta let me show you which goes for a fair bit these days. House of oldies is expensive but you will pick up some good lps there/ Academy records is good for LPs but very lttle singles although they have a shop in Brooklyn I didnt get to. Apparantly the best way to get some stuff is to wander the streets looking for garage sales( i got a fablous Joe Simon lp with a wondeful track called "Dreamin" for $5 or their is a big fair in April sometime. Bleeker Street is probably the best area and in the same street as House of oldies their a modern soul shop but the power went when I was there so couldnt listen to anything. I've been a couple of times and managed to pick up a few things, mainly albums cheap. There's a flea market at the weekends on 6th Avenue I think somewhere around 20th - if you're lucky you might find something there. I picked up a pile of 45's one time, nothing mega but for example some Colossus stuff, Jean Dushon, gene Chandler on Chess or Cadet or one of those, some Jackie Wilson. Condition though was a problem on some of it, some perfect as always. Sorry precise details of location are a bit sketchy I might have some more details at home. Great LPs and usually a big selection of 45s too. It seems to be pretty overlooked by most that know NY. If you go make sure it is some time after 1 as he opens kinda late. You can take the J, M, or Z to Essex and should be able to spot it as you come out of the subway. Unless he's changed it his sign is something like "Vinyl Wanted" written on it, kinda ghetto.
