Taken from my Blog (with some variation!!):

On this particular evening in cool, rainy Derbyshire, an amalgamation of people who had braved the elements gathered together in a dark room eager to hear some good songs, drink and socialise and (the majority) ready to dance.

For the past 5 years and 8 months Chris and Barry have managed to stick to the same basic aesthetic.: Keep the good music flowing and keep the people dancing.

The night kicked off with Chris playing some outstanding tunes and from the very first people were on the floor: dancing their hearts out!

Clearly one of this soul nights biggest attributes is the residents ability to instantly bond with the crowd, a quality so many DJ`s strive for. These are not DJ`s filling a spot by playing a few records, It is more of an ongoing conversation between a man and his like minded friends who appreciate the same music and have a passion for each record played. Very often full of memories and heart felt nostalgia

The result is one of the most enthusiastic crowds you could ever wish to see at a soul night

Sam Evans and Andy (Guests for the evening) were as reliable as ever. Some of the songs we all know and love mixed with some not so well known but all equally as soulful and dance worthy! Last night could easily be called a soul music extravaganza with these two guys showing how much they appreciate the opportunity to show the crowd what soul sounds inspires them.

Overall the night was one of great atmosphere with the crowd (who ranged from more local to as far afield as Rochdale and Nuneaton area etc.) dancing and boogalooing to the special blend of soul music played. It truly didn't take long before the vast majority of the 130 + crowd was feeling the atmosphere and letting loose!!. I am not talking about `hype` here but true enjoyment.

The night was nonstop, the music never failing to please and it was high energy soul with lots of sweat. (Not all of the 100 mph stomper variety however I might add!) At Pilsley it seems to be the interaction between DJ`s and the crowd that makes a memorable night. It's soul nights like this that lets you know soul is alive.

Thanks to Chris that despite sounding like Barry White (chest infection produced husky tones) he managed to play two of my great loves: Broadways; "You just don`t know" & Life; "Tell me why"

Right back now to assignment marking..................................

Great turnout last night at Pilsley on such a wet and miserable night, cracking atmosphere from the start, loads in, a mixture of our regular good friends and new people some who had traveled from far and wide.

Thanks to Andy for his spot ( hope you get your new venue sorted soon ) and of course thanks to Sam Evans, as always she got her spot just right with a great mix of music.

Well done to my Brother Chris who could hardly speak because of this bad throat, but got through it anyway.

Great mix of across the board music the two that stuck out for me were:

The Temptations - That'll Be The Day

Betty Lavette - You Made A Believer out Of Me

Pilsley is on the 3rd Saturday of the month Next night is February 16th with guest Mick Boyle.

I think alot of them celler full cd tracks never got issued, which is why some of the tracks sound so freash and there are some fantastic tracks on them.Bestwood saturday am always on early,im on till about 8.45-9ish.Dont think Austin dare let me go on after that  .Not sure what the turn out will be as this is an extra one that steve is doin.Im sure if people want to hear a decent mix of music then they will turn up,as they do at your event.I think the midlands needs places like pilsley and bestwood to keep the scene interesting

Thanks for the comments: We are hoping to make Bestwood, its a place that we have not been able to get to often as it has sometimes been on the same night as us or when it hasn`t been other things have got in the way: Can`t recall hearing you do a turn on the decks but we will try and get there early enough  We do try and keep the scene in our neck of the woods `interesting` as you say: Thats what we looked for in the old days and thats what it should still be about IMO.

Hope Karen Brown is ok as we know she hasn`t been well and the dancefloor missed her last night! (she was there but didn`t notice her dancing much) Perhaps Steve can let us know???

Yes Jim there are some great tracks on the celler full cd's, but think I'm on thin ice having them carved got a couple more I'd like to but I'll wait and see for now, at least to my knowledge they have not been issued.

Re keeping the scene interesting don't you find that in the East Midlands it is soooooooooo hard to do just that, what I find is that you play anything different then your in trouble, few months back I played Sweet Three "That's The Way It Is" completely cleared the floor, so it was good to hear it again played at Annesley last week by one of the guest jocks.

What we try to do at Pilsley is to play the odd different track here and there so people do hear something different mixed in with the regular stuff.

Hope to see you on Saturday.

Be nice if you could make it,ive done a few spots at bestwood but its always an early because i tend to play the underplayed and forgotten stuff and not the predictable floor fillers, which i know have to be played sometimes but i choose not to go down that road.

As for karen, steve did say she was not well, will have to find out.My Di partner (fatius bumius) has not been well and we have not been out since BIDDS alnighter which was the 22nd dec.Hope to see them at bestwood

Carvers are ok of un-issued tracks, cant see nothing wrong there. Some good points made...its very hard in the mids to do anything but i will keep doing what i do because i get more enjoyment out of it.Makes me laugh when you see a floor clear and its a good tune thats done it.Thats the soul scene now im afraid.I think though places like pilsley, attic, bestwood will shine through this year as more and more people realise that these places play good quality tunes

Morning all,

Yep Karen wasn't 100% on Saturday as she had been in bed most of the week ,but still enjoyed the night ( as we all did ) she had one or two little shuffles on the the dance floor but just ran out of steam.

She's getting herself fit for Bestwood now this coming Saturday

All the best
