Most Memorable Live Soul Group

I was very fortunate to see live in the 60s some truly great group's Junior Walker. Oscar Tony Junior. Edwin Star. But my favourite has to be Sam and Dave the footwork and songs gave that wow factor and when i hear the records today the memories flood back. Who did you see and when. I saw most at the Twisted Wheel and some in Nottingham.

Believe it or not, one of the best shows I have ever seen was The Stylistics, supported by Candi Satton at Glos Leisure Centre many years ago. They were slick, professional and sounded bloody great.

Also saw Bobby Bland about 3 years in the Silver Dollar Room in Toronto, he did 2 shows, 8:00 and 10:00 and to be honest when he shuffled on stage in a Purple Velour Shell Suit I wondered what was going to happen but he was f*#king brilliant. He did a superb version of Bill Withers - Lovely Day as a encore and it was truly superb.

Some great names there Gav, but the one at the top is where it should be.

THE DELLS. Only seen 'em at Trentham Gardens but I'm sure they would have blown away any serious competition on this thread.

I've seen many artists over the years, eddie holman, gene chandler, j.j barnes, hoagy lands, velvelettes even frank wilson, but the one that sticks in my mind the most is jackie wilson, saw him at wigan casino in 75, he was'nt to well, and shortly after he went into a coma, so really lucky to have seen him

Don't go there about the issues at the Airport laugh.gif

Always end up in tears when I see a great live act

In that order but never seen my all time fave singer Bobby Womack.

You've missed nothing if both my concert experinces of "The (alleged) Last Soul Man" have been anything to go by - walked out on the first one, fell asleep at the second...

Anyway, since when was he a "Memorable Live Soul Group"?

My own nominations would be - and as long as we're keeping it just to soul groups -

Four Tops - Finsbury Park Astoria 1970

The O'Jays/Levert - Hammersmith Odeon 1985 (or thereabouts)

The Temprees - Memphis, about four years ago

The Mad Lads - Memphis, also about four years ago

The Spinners - Hammersmith Odeon, c. 1973

The Chi-Lites - Dingwalls, 1982 or thereabouts

The Stylistics - Kingston (Jamaica) Carib Theatre 1974 (supported by Tyrone Davis and Jackie Moore!)

The Dells - Trentham Gardens

...and above all....

Light Of The World - Brighton Top Rank, 1982 - quite simply the best show I have ever attended, by anyone, anywhere, anytime.

Plus probably loads more that I'll recall, as soon as I close this posting.

I have also fallen asleep at:

Maze - Hammersmith Odeon c. 1979 (although i do quite like them)

War - Hammersmith Odeon 1972 (asleep for 15 minutes and they were still playing the intro to "Slippin' Into Darkness"...)

Parliament/Funkadelic - Hammersmith Odeon c. 1978

...well, wouldn't you? wicked.gif

For energy and choreography Johnny Johnson and the Bandwagon at the Copa Mo Owestry in 1970.

For power and passion Edwin Starr (on many occasions), but first time at Wem Town Hall (1970) where I was DJing with him. Arrived early to set up, to find Edwin and his minder sitting in a Mini Marcos in the car park. Introduced ourselves and Edwin said 'Do you need a hand in with the equipment?'. Helped me with carrying in and setting up of the speakers, amps and turntables. Magical moment!

For hairs on the back of the neck experience - Smokey Robinson at the Symphony Halls, Birmingham (June 2007) until he started f**king around with Frank Sinatra/Andy Williams songs and finally turning the event into a Hi-de-Hi holiday camp singalong.

For wow factor Sly and the Family Stone and the Voices of East Harlem at the Isle of Wight Pop Festival in 1970.

1970 was a very special year.

Brian

Tony,

The Four Tops were a bit like Edwin Starr in that every performance of theirs was one of pure professionalism.

That 1973 comment about the Detroit Spinners at Hammersmith Odeon, was that the Atlantic package with Sister Sledge, Jimmy Castor and Ben E. King, They were absolutely stunning and if my memory serves me right ended the show carrying off Philippe Wynne still singing 'Mighty Love'. The Spinners were real entertainers and did some great spoofs of other Motown artists.

As for Bobby Womack, there's some confusion here. When he came over in the early 70's I thought he was dire. He seemed to think that all we wanted to hear were different versions of 'It's All Over Now'. I thought the concert was crap, BUT away from Sly Stone and on the back of the two Poet albums his mid eighties return was simply phenomenal. Those concerts were some of the most exciting I've ever witnessed, and like yourself mate, I've seen a few. (Some with your goodself)

dells, full stop. i actually saw people topple over when marvin junior hit those notes. yes got to ask was there a video. about that time some one being interviewed in a mag said that their wish was to be the 6th dell. being at trentham that night he was in a line of thousands. the previous sunday i had the joy of speaking to the dells on radio derby and trying to pick out a playlist from them. i asked about "wear it on our face" and they said that they could not remember the tune.i was then passed onto their representative. " hi this is otis leaville, mr love uprising. i replied ,, hi otis are we going to see more of you than we did at the torch when you came on the stage and asked if everyone was ok?? then you were gone. hey you never know??? was his reply. thanks to chris burton and dev daly(radio derby/radio one) for that. i thought that this question was going to be easy, yes dells at number one but what was the next.

blown away by the precisions.

Not a big live act fan either, curiosity value and sentimental support for me . . . . .but one that always sticks in my mind was Chuck Jackson at what was the Sherwood Rooms (now Oceana) Nottingham, absolutely great performance, not sure of the year - just the girl I was with to date it! (1982/3?).

Got some tapes somewhere of Edwin Starr at Wigan, Jr Walker too, must have a sort out.

Temptations at the N.E.C.

Most memorable performance by an artist not a group (went a little oscars there) - Lorraine Chandler at Stafford.

Honourable mentions to Little Ann Cleethorpes, Masqueraders at Prestatyn and Dean Parrish Cleethorpes.

Most eye popping, what the hell do we have here award goes to the Velvelettes at Hinkley in 'THOSE' dresses that gave the ladies no dignity at all. Anyone have any photos ;-)

The accolade to the best live act that I have seen , goes to The Stylistics at The Torch ......

Totally out of context with the live acts Chris Burton was putting on at the all - nighters , but it worked ......

Most memorable for me, although perhaps not the best, was James Carr at an all-day blues festival in Brentford in about 1996. His voice was worn and it wobbled badly on one of the songs, and he looked haunted, but it was JAMES CARR!

Other than that, like Tony Rounce I'd pick The Temprees and Mad Lads in Memphis, but from the same few nights in April and May 2003 I'd have to add:

Rance Allen - simply the finest performance I've ever witnessed, and it's a real shame he only sang the one song, but what a song;

The Soul Children - J. Blackfoot screaming his way through the set was something to see;

The Masqueraders - perfect three-part harmonies but I wish they had sung more of their own songs.

And then:

The Dells - Trentham (of course)

Laura Lee - Blues Estafette, Utrecht, 2004

Roscoe Robinson, Barbara Lynn and Clay Hammond - Utrecht 2000

Sam Dees - first time at the Jazz Cafe, early 90s

Bettye LaVette - Jazz Cafe, early 90s

Lee Fields and the Dap-Kings - Jazz Cafe a few years ago

With you there, Salv - If I was picking just one song, by just one singer, Rance doing "That Will Be Good Enough For Me" would unquestionably be it. Nothing I've ever seen, or ever will see, could even come close. And I've seen a few decent songs, sung by a few decent singers, down the years...

...Was it really as long as 5 years ago? Blimey!

5 years ago this May.

And whilst we were at it I will also go on this one. I don't think anything could have prepared us for how good that performance was.

I'm not sure anyone could have taken more than that one number!!
