and let me be the second:

the 'barrowby soul' crew moved out of their old 1930s nissan hut style village hall venue and have now set up stall firmly in the 21st century in a venue that is warm, plush, one may even say posh and appropriate for people of our age group.

i say this because i (and many others) feel that the days of northern soul being served up upon a 'spit and sawdust' style venue is or was a thing of the past, and era from our younger more carefree days.now situated at the grantham squash and racket club the same ethos that made people grin and bare the barrowby nissan hut (ethos of totally mixed northern genre and two extremely hospitable hosts) has traveled with the event.

when i first entered the building and got up to the first floor (forgot to ask if there was disabled access but i'm sure now that the DDA has come into force there will be) i didn't quite know how i would take to the set up.not because it had carpets and nice furnishings but because the lounge-seated-chill out area was separate from the dance floor.

there were a few chairs and table around the dance floor to accommodate those who like their whole evening contained in one noisey-shout-not-talk area) but mostly the socialising and conversing took place in what i shall call the lounge/bar area.i realise there are many venues that do have a seperate seating area but the thing that eventually warmed me to this venue is the seated/lounge area is just an archway away from the dance floor.

this meant one could see the dancers, hear the music but not be stifled by it due to the way the 'arch' held most of the volume within the dance area.hosts and resident dee-jays barry cooper and ian seaman were as dependent as they always are playing crowd pleasing northern soul from early 60s to 2KY.couple the play lists from these two with their dissarming and enthusiastic characters and one has a winning formula.

the guest was mick 'h' from notts.now the last time i heard a mick 'h' set was some time ago at the fleet in peterborough and to be honest i didn't enjoy it much but.... this night, in my opinion, the man didn't play a duff record in his whole set. i will certainly travel to hear him play again if he does more of the same, excellent sounds.

by the end of the evening my potential misgivings concerning the layout were totally dismissed, as a venue for us more mature (chronologically) northern soul fans it works, it works very well indeed. i shall certainly return to the phoenix soul because it rose from the ashes of barrowby on to a plateau of almost perfection.

here's a thing, out of about 150 people attending there were 18 known dee-jays. (i say 'known' because there may have been some i don't know), so... minus the three who were dee-jaying on the night that means 10% of the crowd were dee-jays. bit of a record for a 'normal' event. i.e. not a dee-jay's convention :D

Were you one of the 10% Mick? Why give folk labels? :D

As someone who is cacking re: our change of venue due to the backstabbing vitriolic shyte that seems to follow us wherever and whatever we do, I'm really chuffed the lads had a great night, long may they continue.

Hi Chris

I wish I wrote Mick 'H' set down, he played a great mix of tunes, don't suppose he'll see this this but if you do Mick.................. you can always ask Pete Taylor one of the tunes he played because he was up at the decks asking about one of them.

I was one for the first hour then for a short while later some of the tunes I played where:

Don't Ask Me To Forget - Jay & The Techniques

Sooner or Later - Alvarez

That's The Way It Is - Sweet Three

Color Him Father - The Winstons

Not Too Long Ago - The Uniques

Love Is Like A Itching In My Heart - Timothy Wilson

Everythings Wrong - Chubby Checker

A Lot Of Love - Homer Banks

I'll Never Forget You - Metros

That'll Be The Day - Temptations

Going Going Gone - Cody Black

That's What You Do To Me - Deon Jackson

I'm The Man - Albert Washington

You Left The Water Running - Barbara Lynn

Come Get To This - Marvin Gaye

House For Sale - Millie Jackson

Wade In The Water - Ramsey Lewis

Magic Knight - If You And I Had Never Met

Love Don't Come Much Stronger - Jeff Perry

Are You Ready For This - Jackie Verdell

Harold Melvin - Prayin' ®

Just Walk In My Shoes - Glady Knight

Fall Into My Love - Black Box

Crazy World - Kenny Thomas

Independent Woman - Jan Jones

Could be a couple more and of course they are not in the order they were played.

As you see we are 100% across the board ,maybe Ian will post his later

I would like to add my thanks to all that came to support us on our first night at The Squash Club, thanks go to the bar staff who welcomed us,very nice bar/lounge area and a bar with very reasonable prices, and thanks to Pam who as always was on the door with her smiling face.

Been round to see Pete Taylor this morning who informed me that I missed a great night. I wont miss the next one though, but he did warn me that I would have to put my best clothes on as it's a bit posh

See you all soon

If my mate Mick H was doing a spot then it would have been a top night & no doubt the craic before & after his spot would have been like bloody "Pheonix Night's", come to think of it he looks a bit like Peter Kaye?? Bloody hell it could be him moonlighting as a comic to make ends meet, what do you think Bish???

Take care, be safe & remember, "Life is a cabaret, old chum, come to the cabaret",

Spot.
