Tunes You Dont Like

Recommended Posts

The thread that Joan initiated about playing records you don't like had a few titles dotted around but how about you didn't like either at first hearing or even for ages but then you had a change of heart perhaps. To kick it off:

Tear Stained Face - Don Varner

Didn't like this from the day I first heard it (think it was the Casino) until many years later when Mark Bicknell played the original at home on his hi-fi and I heard the 'farting' background horns for probably the first time. It was clean and undistorted and sounded fabulous and I absolutely love it now.

I don't care for any version of the old Peggy Lee "standard" FEVER (Little Willie John) - whether it's her version, Jazz-Funk (Ronnie Laws), Latin (La Lupe), Reggae (Keith 'Junior' Byles or Susan Cadogan) or indeed, LWJ's original :cheese1:

I don't know why.

On the Northern side, the first tune that springs to mind which has me reaching for the switch is Don Thomas's COME ON TRAIN

Guest in town Mikey

Started a thread like this last year

Cool Off - Detroit executives, all ways thought it was tripe, then years later heard it again ...loved it

Bazza

Same answer as on that thread Bazza

Salvadores - Stick By Me Baby

Couldnt work out why so many people reveered a mess like that. Then one night in 2005 Ady C dropped it at the 100 club, and all the pieces fell into place. It sounded superb.

With you on Murial (Sesame Street) Day!

But my all time pet hate is Judy Street - "What".....when I 1st heard it I thought it was utter tripe!

Now im older and wiser I hear it and think.....................UTTER TRIPE!!

I think some people didn't quite read the question properly, it's about records you used to hate but like now.

Mine is Sam Williams - Love slipped through my fingers. When this was first played I thought it sounded terrible, the intro and backing vocals always sounded out of tune. They still do, but I hadn't listened to the vocal properly back then. It only had a short lifespan as it came out on Grapevine, I really listened to it properly maybe 2 years later and loved it ever since, especially the Grapevine single which is 20 seconds longer than any other version

Was never really over keen on "Don't Take It Out On This World" - Adam's Apples even when I used to play it (completely contradicting my point on another thread recently) - I thought it sounded like a repetitive monotonous dirge and the guy's voice annoyed me for some reason..

But played it again just recently after 30 years of avoiding it and it sounded just great.

But I don't get how anyone couldn't like the Salvadores or even the Detroit Executives! Both killers....

But there again, that's what this thread is all about!

I was never keen on The Four Perfections. I dont know why. I used to avoid it like the plague. In fact when it used to come on I started comin down. It was weird. Now that I am older/wiser /better lookin and a good old egg in general, I love it to bits.

The Flasher by Mistura ft Lloyd Michaels. When I first heard it I almost throw my iPod away. WTF is this thing and how did it ever got played on the northern scene??? Then I listened to it over and over again. I love it now. Actually, when I always play it to people who doesn't know anything about northern soul and they love it to.

If I ever make a movie, that's definitely gonna be in the soundtrack

used to hate LENNY CURTIS ...DIRTY HEARTS hear it now and i'm on the dance floor, the same with the SATISFACTIONS ON SMASH.It's the reactivation of tunes like these and many more underplayed stormers that make venues on the proper scene so great. One last thing a lot of you have mentioned a lot of thing i:e gary lewis, david and the giants and I'LL add april stevens, barbera mills, nabay, joe jampot and j.d bryant. These records were shite years ago and are still shite, they have no place at soul venues at all

all the best tezza

I'm not to keen on "run to the hills" iron maiden :lol:

:wicked: ..Hey, that's a classic tune!!. lol. play it again, it'll grow on ya'.

There are loads of records I used to hate. When I used to listen to Richard Searling having guest DJ's on his show about 10years ago or so, I couldn't bear to listen when Soul Sam was the guest and there were 7T's records galore.. (Tent music I guess?) Nowadays most of them are on wants list and I always make the effort to go and listen to Sam if he's dj'ing at a venue I'm attending.

I bought the Brothers - Are Your Ready For this on recommendation years ago, and did not like it. Thought - whats all this about?. Kept giving it a play over the years, put it back in the box.

Then a few years back (Skegness butlins weekender I think) , heard it played out (don't go to many anymore BTW), and thought it sounded great.

So there we are , changed my mind, although got fed up of it now! smile.gif

Also did not like Milliie Jackson - House for Sale at the time (probably into more 60s stompers then), but its an ok tune now for me.

Sadly most mentioned up to now are down to one thing , being played out.......if rested they soon become fresh,to me anyway...its a vicious circle , a record is played and loads are up dancing to it so its played again and again month in month out....strange thing is some never seem to tire of em.

Then you have bums on seats when out fresh is played , i'm talking more the soul nights here and most have an element of "baggers" who are'nt serious as its just a monthly night on the drink with a dance thrown in hence repeats and more repeats !!

Now i'll name my choice and it has said group clammering for a place on the floor, millie jackson......house for sale......she can do better we all know that........it's cheeeeeese.

only my opinion lol.....what do i know !

Spot on Joe , It depends on where you go realy , I can remember a young lady DJ at the 100 club spinning Out on the floor a while back , It sounded great and the floor was packed , would have been just another played out oldie at the local oldies night .

Millie Jackson add that to my list :D
