I liked it for years and then one day I heard it and I just hated it and have ever since. I didn't used to like Barbara Mason that much.....I know!!! And now I've come to realise that it's probably one of the best records I'll ever hear. I don't know why I didn't take to it originally, I think I thought it was a bit tinny and one dimensional. And then one day I heard it out at a venue and it sounded like Northern Soul really should - lots of stops and starts, a great vocal and a fantastic melody. Couldn't understand why mates had paid thirty five quid for it, which was the going rate at the time. Thought it to be repetative twee crap. To kick it off: Tear Stained Face - Don Varner Didn't like this from the day I first heard it (think it was the Casino) until many years later when Mark Bicknell played the original at home on his hi-fi and I heard the 'farting' background horns for probably the first time. Facinations - girls are out to get you, always thought this was utter turd, herd it on a decent sound system, completly different record! with regard to the four vandalls, i was not around on the scene when ther was some sort of issue with this record being an undiscoverd record from the 6ts........dont want to piss on anyones chips, but how did anyone think that this record was actualy any good, and an original......it sounds terrible, so obvious modern recording techniques were used....dont get it AT ALL??? heartache souvenirs?? my good, this is one of the best records ever......... But on revisiting recently, what a grower! I don't even hear the ridiculous intakes of breath any more, just the desperation that the guy's girl mustn't leave him. Can't stop playing it.
