The first Empress of the year and what a fantastic night, but then again I've come to expect nothing less from this fantastic venue.

A constantly packed dancefloor was a testiment to the quality of the DJ's, all surpassing themselves, providing belting spots.

I've already got my ticket in eager anticipation for the next one in May. What an exceptionally high standard you've set yourselves.

As they say a picture tells a thousand words:

The Empress in Mexborough, Easter Sunday March 2008..... Northern Soul as it used to be

A venue packed with people, people out to dance, to socialise, to reminisce, to share a night of northern soul

Why was it such a good night

Why were the tickets sold out well in advance?

Somebody please answer these for me.

I can guess some of it....

Mine hosts Yocky and joy are very, very nice people, unassuming and both friendly and welcoming to the 'inth' degree.

The venue, practically perfect in every way (just slipping in a Disney quote which seems apt to the 'Disney' event.)

A Disney event (or maybe a J.M.Barrie event to be more precise) because the whole place was filled with Peter and Petra Pans just going straight back to their youth, immersing themselves in a northern soul night as they always were and always should be. No pretence, no politics just a big fat dance-dance-dance of a night surrounded by friendliness and soul.....

I personally found the music spun by Woody, Nellie, Ian Gee, Mick 'H' and Yocky not challenging enough, that's just a personal opinion but believe me it was a veritable A to Z of Northern Soul Memories infused upon the vinyl of our lives. When I know almost every word of almost every song played I often feel that it's too comforting, not 'challenging' enough but.....

I can't argue with the footfall upon the dance floor, I can't argue with the way these standard sounds were embraced and expressed to by the majority.

So if you are lucky to get a ticket for one of these Bank-Holiday Sunday events in Mexborough then don't go expecting something different musically then standard classics mixed in with up-tempo R n B, because THAT'S what's played, and it's THAT which makes it a perfect evening of Northern Soul, just how it used to be.

Excellent night,

excellent venue,

excellent crowd!

I will certainly be going again (if I manage to get a magical ticket to the Willie Wonker-esq factory on Northern Soul Heaven in Mexborough, south Yorkshire.

Early off to Empress for Jonah,Rachel,Gail & I so we can deliver young Pete for his warm up spot & to meet Mick H & Mandy for aperitif's & canape's in the foyer. Upon entering I thought I'd stepped into "Ashes to Ashes" as we were greeted by the spectre of M.C.Hammer-Goddard & all I could think was, "Can't touch this, can't touch this, can't touch this, my music hits me so hard, makes me say, Oh Lord, thank you for blessing me, with rhythm and two hyped feet". I was looking round for the De lorean back to the future car & Christopher Lloyd whom I was sure had sold Nell half a zoot suit when I was snapped back to reality by Joy (with Big Mama hugs), Yocky & Jean & a typical warm welcome. :D

So introductions made & off into main room, by 8:15 the place was chocker & buzzing with the dancefloor never empty, infact so full that decks kept getting an odd nudge from people sat on or attempting to get to the stage to request music & of course this made the Dj's a little anxious & fractious to say the least.

Anyway it's Oldies all the way here Coops & woe betide anyone who has the audacity to play anything too modern or different, because besides being booed off they'd most likely be lynched but you know that when(if available) you buy a ticket, it's a big social gathering on a holiday of drunken Soulies (unless your a designated driver for the evening) dancing the night away & enjoying every minute & long may it reign. So from that prospective the music was bang on & Ian Gee & Mick together with the residents did what they are paid for, to entertain. Also I know that Mick & Mandy thoroughly enjoyed it & said it won't be 12 months this time before they're back. thumbup.gif

So get your ticket now for the next one,cos most will have already been snapped up on the night & you don't want to be a last minute Larry. no.gif

Take care, be safe & remember,"It's Hammer time",

Spot.

p.s. Yocky I'm never lost for words my friend, you should know that & anyway nothing Nell does ever suprises me.
