Soulful Shack, Culcheth

Recommended Posts

At the risk of sounding repetitive I have to report yet another great night at the Soulful Shack. This venue really must be one of the friendliest out there .

Excellent spots by all the DJs who keep coming up with the goods in terms of quality underplayed/little known sounds. Jane - you must take responsibility for adding to my 'wants list' and Johnny Fingers - so good to meet you mate - I was so touched by your act of kindness - the Hi Tensions will occupy a special place in my box forever!

Only 4 weeks to go until the next one - start counting the days!

Hi to everyone who was at Soulful Shack last night! What another CRACKING night. Mike & Steve let me loose behind the decks with MY TUNES and I hold my hand up , I did play quite a few unknowns but the response I got from everyone was great.

The time behind the decks went so quickly and I had much more to play, here's my playlist, in no particular order:

Big Mama Thornton - wade in the Water - Arhoolie

The O'Jays - Whip it on me baby - Imperial

The reflections - Vito's House - ABC promo

The Clovers - love potion no.9 - UA

Bretha Tilman - lovin time - Brent

David Ruffin - You can get what I got- Check Mate

Marv Johnson - come to me - UA

Debbie Dean - don't let him shop around - Motown M1007

sherri Taylor & singing sammy ward - Lover - Motown M1004

The Temptations - check yourself - Miracle

Mel Torme - Comin home baby - London

Freddie Houston - Chills & Fever - Old Town

el Gran Combo -clap your hands - Gema

Mary Winslow - Abba Cadda Ba - Bagdad

And a few others which I aint telling !!!!! laugh.gif

Nice to finally meet Johnny Fingers, fantastic tunes: and Dean, great quality soul & RnB. And Steve & Mike for keeping the flag flying for all those people who are sick and tired of hearing the same old same old. Keep it up chaps, stuff everyone else :shades:

Thanks all for you support without you it wouldnt be possible

I agree another top night with some fantastic sounds played by all DJs

Thanks to all the DJs who came and entertained, surprised and educated us all, Jane playing top R&B Tunes and even managed to blow one of the speakers  , Dean played some fantastic soul and some Stafford sounds I hadnt heard in years and Johnny who travelled a long way to do his spot, we really do appreciate it, played some fantastic rare and soulful sounds. Thanks all of you from me and Mike :shades:thumbup.gif

If you enjoyed it tell your mates and drag them up for the next one, I know the venue is in a little village and not in a town centre but I'm sure that anyone who has been will say what a fantastic little venue it is.

We will keep on playing what we play and I'm sure that with the friendliest crowd I have come across in ages we will make this a top venue

Again thanks everyone for your continued support

Lou, I will see if I can dig out some old photos of Lorraine etc for the next one to see if we can spot you on any of them

Thanks

Steve

Hey Everyone, Thanks for coming and showing your support. I personally enjoyed all the music last night. We had some good solid not so worn out 60's dancers..nice new york city soul...soulful RnB...some low down dirty gritty growlers and some fantastic group soul sounds. All from the 60's except for a couple of latter 50's tunes.

Again, we matched our last two evenings, attendance wise, 40+. Which is not the best..but we're enjoying ourselves. In turn you may come along and join us, if not just for a break from the norm.

(I must add, a foursome came in last night. Now... i couldn't add up if they wanted to give up northern soul, desperately. As they were covered in patches. There cravings for the music were definately affected as they left after about an hour and a half or so. Apparently they had bags of Northern soul for sale...what?...oh...sorry my mistake Northern soul 'bags' for sale. I'm assuming that this is a greener alternative to using the plasti......What? Ooooooh sorry am i getting mixed up again.

Apparently you buy the Bags...you get a wigan Casino denim jacket, free!!

Including an ensemble of iron on northern soul patches, which I've just found out are not to help you kick the habit, but to show where you've been over the years...soul clubs and nighters etc. Except apparantly you can just pretend you were there!

Either way, i'm also told you get a free Northern soul phrase book and rough guide to! too. Within these pages you will find helpful tips and phrases to get you through. There is a long list of really rare records for you to remember, to use in conversations which help you get along with the natives. I heard one last night come to think of it. DO you hov..gootar ray..its worth ooooht hindrod ponds!! I didn't quite understand but at least they're trying to speak the language).

Joking apart, obviously these people love Northern soul..and have travelled(or are pretending to  ) far and wide for many many many years to listen to the same old same old same old same olds year in year out. And in there opinion they thought our clubs music policy was tosh. As they didn't even get to hear the vibrations, johnny bragg or ace spectrum...Lets go and warn all the others away before it's too late.

PLEASE!!! AND TAKE YOUR FOOKING BAGS WITH YOU!!

I MEAN, ITS THE SAME PERCEPTION AS JOE PUBLIC AND THE CHRISTMAS MOTOWN ALBUM SINDROME..IF IT AINT ON THE MOTOWN ALBUM ITS WEIRD SHIT MUSIC FROM THE SIXTIES...YET IF; DANCIN IN THE STREET, BERNADETTE OR HEAVEN MUST HAVE SENT YOU, THEN ITS GREAT..I'VE HEARD THIS ON THE RADIO...iT'S THE SAME WITH SOME SO CALLED "NORTHERN" FANS. IF IT'S NOT ON THE TOP 500 OR THEY HAVEN'T HEARD IT 50 TIMES OVER THEN IT MUST BE RnB, POPCORN THEM BELGIUMS PLAY OR ROCK AND ROLL. OH AND IT'S DEFINATELY SHIT AND ITS DEFINATELY NOT NORTHERN.

(RANT FINISHED)

Here's, in no particular order, my playlist from last night:

Bruce Cloud My Book Era

A Quirky tune using a typewriter as the basis for the track"my book". Bruce sings about his love for a certain lady and how, she, is the inspiration for this book, it's gonna be a best seller across the nation. A feel good dancer with a bass line which has you nodding your head in appreciation straight away. And then the catcy typewriter part..a rat a tattat tat tat tat tat ding!!!

Jay Busby Apple Cider, Apple Cider Bethlehem

A Moody Masterpeice of a track. Which within gives you the low down on how they make there own apple cider. Apparently you put them in a can, kinda cook um slow til the soldier expands, you cool it down baby, then you sugar it down, you bury for six weeks in the coool ground and the track continues with a small insight into the simple life of farm hands or "home help" where the one day all the boys have together to let off steam is in the "evening shed" suppin straight from the jug. The vocal is almost Jimmy Ricks deep and is almost hypnotic.

Utopians Ain't no such thing Imperial wlp

This track from somewhere between 60 and 63 has it all for me. Vocally there is rapping, a solo vocal and group vocal. All of which is slotted into a mid tempo up beat rythm of drums piano and bass hitting notes in sync giving off an infectious beat that has you tightening your lips, forrowing your brow and nodding your 'heeeed' in complete satisfaction of the punch the tune holds. ffoooooooookin fantstic!! And as for the other side!!!!

Turbans The damage is done Imperial wlp

Yet another Imperial up beat dancer with that doo wop feel and so soulful vocal. a flawless arrangement between vocal and instrumentation give this an immediate " what the f**ks this?" factor, a real reccomendation.

Frank Heppinstall Sweetheart polyphonic wlp

Bobby Guy Good Enough Apt

whhhoooooooooooooooooooooooooooo weeeee !

Sherlock Holmes What an argument Brunswick ylp

Well if i hadn't have seen it with my own eyes, i wouldn't have believed it. This one got Mike Warburton by the collar and dragged him up on the dancefloor. Again immediately infectious arrangement with the brass, piano and bass in sync then inviting Sherlock in with his lusterous vocal. Which he does telling us his story of how these arguments come about with his girl, so we can all agree on that one.

Del Vikings Confession of love Abc Paramount

Benny C. Oliver Make it now Ojobco

Now, this is probably considered the rubbish version, and being in my closet never realised it was. However, for me, this different recording to the 'Bridges' release(later, but not "too" later) Offers a more refined arrangement and slightly more pollished vocal than the earlier recording. If anyone knows anymore please let me know. Don't tell me its a 1.99 boot from whsmiths.

Stan Mitchell Lovin' Man Gone

o.k. Bought this off of Ted at the Hideaway, Not sure if this was the side he was selling it for, as i think he might have missed this one.(Or he has another copy) this just feels right. Right from the off, the sort of thing that's tagged Popcorn by some and RnB by others. But if you want to define soul to someone i cant think of a better example than this !!!

Junior Lewis Tears on my face Columbia wlp

Bobby Adams I think you want my girl Colpix

Cleftones Do you Gee wlp

A recent 2 or 3 dollar purchase. Which is amazing to think ,when you here the quality of this doo wop soul group vocal. with big orchestral production and arrangement. I simply love this.

Freddy Jaye Thinkin of you United Artists wlp

This creates interest everytime its played...If the likes of ginger or Sam were to play this in a main room slot it would go national overnight.

It's moody and mighty at the same time, But the storyline and the delivery of vocal gives this a big feel. FFFFF f foookin amazin.

Kenny Dana It's been so long Shell

Same as above for this, kettle drums and strings with a mid tempo beat. This is enough to break the strongest of testoronic wills...into big wet lettuces in the space of 2.5 minutes. Again causes a lot of interest when played. I know Ezzie has one for sale...One of three maybe four copies that we know about.

Robert and Johnny Brown, pretty brown eyes Sue.

And thats that.....Finally. A big thankyou to;

Jane, Dean, and Johnny fingers for playing a good variety of sixties soul, all within the realms of what we're trying to bring back to the forefront. Quality 60's RnB/SOUL music wether its 2 dollars or 200 quid.

We just need that few more of you to bring this night up a notch..so if you like it wholesome and sixties come and give us a try. Oh and Please leave your bags and vest at home, but bring your good ear with you.

Mike.

Finally !! It had Arrived. The weekend when my DJ bookings for 2008 really kicked off in earnest.. with three spots over two nights. My first being the Friday night trek up appx 190 miles of tarmac to Culcheth (near Warrington) for the Soulful Shack. The relatively new venue (this being it's third event) offering something a bit different to those like-minded soulies appreciative of early 60t's, late 50's even, R'n'B and lesser known discs of quality Soul Music.

After arriving in the area around an hour before the 8pm start I managed to secure myself a hotel room for the evening just a couple of miles from the venue. Time enough to freshen up, and then head out to the nights promise of musical entertainment.

The duo of promoters behind the Soulful Shack - Mike & Steve, had just arrived themselves - the sound system set up and the two aforementioned officiados began the nights proceedings with an hour of music that fit's in perfectly with my own 'personal music of preference'.

Meanwhile I wandered around this excellent little 'L-shaped' (almost) venue. exchanging greeting's with punter's as they arrived. It was weird how most of the eventual attendees seemes to congregate in the 'bit around the corner'.. a position I'm certain would be the first to be filled should this venue attract anywhere near it's capacity. I soon happened across the pleasurable company & conversaton of Pete Griffin and his lovely wife (?) Val (or was it Gale.. :P ). A chap with an incredibly, almost identical in every way, taste in music to mine !! Also had the pleasure of, for the first time, meeting Jane (fellow tune spinner for the evening) & Taff (?), her partner, Eric Healock and Steve Crooks (another man with quality taste) plus the other guest DJ of the evening.. Mr Dean Mitchell !! Just loved the Steve Flannigan you played - Top Tune!! Apologies to those other fine peeps I neglect (thru poor memory) to mention by name but who also contributed to my enjoyment of the night - even when outside in the Smokers Corner.

With the arrival of Mike Warburton - who I hadn't seen in 10 years !! the brilliant mix of tunes spun by all the DJ's of the evening, the sociable approach of all attendee's.. a great night !! One I hope Mick & Ste stick with - 'cos it only takes one visit & people soon realise that they are witness to a winning formula. Keep up the good work guy's !!

As hard as I try.. I can't remember all that I played !! (I took a pen with me, for the specific purpose of recording my set for this post - and forgot !!) With the hectic & long weekend I endured I knew my memory would fail me miserably without a written reminder !! The following is a list of what I can remember, and I just hope I've got those right !! (In no particular order..)

Hey there Johnny, A Big thank you, once again, for fulfilling your roll as furthest travelled soulie! And producing the goods for us at our do here in "downtown" Culcheth. the Next time you're on, Hopefully there will be a few more peeps in, to add to the atmosphere, and also to Merit the quality of music that you played.

Your actions on the evening show what a true gent you are...And feel it is a shame you live so far away, as i could imagine a lot of friendships being formed with the regulars. I understand Steve Crooks was left in awe of your generousity, and of your general friendly outgoing personality...which was received with the same, from what is, becoming our regular crowd down here.

Unfortunately i missed you at Middleton as i left early doors again, i hope all your bookings for the weekend carried on as succesfully as ours was fulfilled. WE'll see you soon, thanks old bean..too doo loo

Part of it all, for me Mike, is the social pleasure derived from the company of like-minded 'souls'. At least one can be guaranteed company they will enjoy - even if the people were previously unknown. Nobody as nice as us soulies on this planet !!

Good job I enjoy my driving, and don't consider distance to be a problem !! It was actually over 500 miles I clocked up in total for the weekend (not the four thought previous) !! But each and every one worth the effort.

Certainly feel you guy's should stick with it at 'The Shack'.. as the potential certainly is there. Look forward to my return, I know that.

Ooh !! Just remembered another spin of mine from the nite:

Dean Parrish 'I'm Over Eighteen' (Musicor)

Pete...I can understand somewhat, what you are about to undertake...i spent 12 months on crutches myself after having my leg fooked up. I ended up with an "external fixator"on mine...By the sounds of it you may well have had one of those on already. Either way matey i hope it all goes well for you, and it is all beneficial as to the moneys' you're spending.... hhmm leg sorted or more vinyl. (joking apart mate, good luck)

all the best Mike and clan.
