I'd much rather 'recycle' a record and get it to someone who will either play it or cherish it more than me.

At the time at my moms we didnt have a phone (only recently got leckky!) so people couldnt reserve over the phone so just hoped and sent their cash. This sometimes meant the tunes had gone. So instead of sending credit notes out i would send records of more value, on approval, so as Tim had sent me £3 i sent him a Edwin Starr "Mellow/My kinda" which promptly was returned by him with a letter of disapproval.

Saw him some time later and he asked if i still had any Edwin Starr's left, regretably just the one of my own and sighned by the late great man.......

Any how things improved when i paid to have the phone put in and i left my old fella (RIP) to answer when the next list went out while i was out at work.

Trouble was, as a lot of people will recall, he was all but death after years of working alongside the drop hammer in the forge at SPT Sheffield.

So most people now phoning up were greeted with a "eh", "cannie 'ear thi cock can tha shaat up"

"Alan phones been ringing all bloody day, i cant get mi tomatoes seeen too in greenharse"

sad day when i found out he also sold at bargain prices , chandlers 20 quid , dean courtney ...etc etc

I think that qualifies as someone's bargain of the century Pete. Got to be the winner to date in terms of regret surely.

Current book price on Lester Tipton is £3,500 whereas that same 4g's of whizz will probably still be £40 I guess.

So that's a net loss of £3,460 over 30 years. Difficult to beat that I reckon........

And the record's still massively rare!

I've always loved this instrumental, and it's a cheapie too (15GBP). If you flip it over though, and play the vocal, it's just plain awful. How is this possible?

I let a copy of The Valentinos go a few weeks back but, as I got a Ringleaders in return, I wasn't that bothered. But let's not talk about the stupid swap I made for my Carol Jones and the Soul Reflections (RMR) ouch...

Del larks (Got £62 for that) Most of the Canadian epic stuff Oh God it would take too long - Surfice to say I got just under £1900 in one night and was left with 6 records including Pete Warner which I sold to Pete S in 2000 The other 5 which included touch of venus on awhite Champion demo i swapped for a couple of Rock lps in a second hand record shop in reading.

I still have nightmares of what it is all worth now. I could never attain the same level of rarity /cost factor today.

A brand new Motorcycle / leathers helmet The lot and had a holiday and bought some clothes and a fish tank

In my time I have sold 30-40 thousand singles via record lists,personal deals and obviously many of them would bring nightmares with todays prices but business is business so no point in getting upset (at selling a £1000 sound for £2 thats business)

What this post is about by the evil man who started it is what causes pain WELL

After all my record dealing I saved about 6-8 hundred of my favourite sounds 80% english top tunes from the Wheel etc including A.lexandra patten,B obby sheen,Ray Pollard,Vala reagan,art freaman,dean parish,Invitations,Incredibles,Garnet Mimms,loads of demos like Helpless ,everybody loves a goodtime,sweet thing,unsatified,hoagy lands and lots more including later big tunes such as you satisfied my needs and more beat ballad stuff plus imports of the Baby reconsider quality etc.

They were causing nobody any trouble lying and totally forgotten up in a spare bedroom until I met up in some cheesy disco in about 1981 asked have I got any tunes left by 2 well known jocks I said yes (bad answer).

I didn't get railroded into it I didn't even need the money but I let them go at a very weak moment for about £200 but my comfort at the time was they would make better use of them than I would.

I had no regrets untiil 1999 when all of a sudden Richard Searling phoned me and 2 hours later Ian Levine knocked on my door with some cameras and I realised what a twat I'd been.AND WORST WHAT A TWAT IAN (FRANK) IS I HOPE THIS MAKES HIM FEEL BETTER because I have to cut it short to get it over and done with even though I am half pissed.

my pain dosent really compare to others (My pain is more that i didnt have the money in the eighties and ninties to really buy the tunes I wanted) but around 1980/81 i decided to get rid of all my pressings bootlegs etc in bundles of ten for a fiver to finance my collection of originals. as well as the usual crap in amongst it was a Billy Watkins era 3183 and a pink prince ella both of which i was convinced were boots.

Some young mod bought about six of the £5.00 bundles I have never seen him in Edinburgh again and wonder what happened to them.

And Ian you are wrong I dont feel better for writing it all down.

Well, it's happened to all of us hasn't it?

At some point most of us have had a record in our hands that is very special. Then, for one reason or another, you allow the record to leave the cosy comfort of your collection and then spend the rest of your life regretting the fact that you'd allowed it to slip through your fingers.

It may have been for a number of reasons. Possibly there was another fresher record that you wanted and in order to get it, you may have had to trade that special one, thinking that you'd be able to get it again in the future.

There's gotta be some GREAT stories here, so let's hear 'em!

It was on the usa Mel Bay label if my memory is right sold it a few years back can't remember a uk 12" about when this was big!

I can just about remember, the deal was done in the record bar at the Casino so must of been late 81 with a few mates saying to me at the time "ho i would not let that go"

When I was young I did buy Fuller Brothers ..Time a wasting on soul clock for a fiver from a little secound hand record shop.However took it back didn t sound too good on my record player and got my money back............

Another was in a flea market in cornwall about 84 and a found a bloke selling a box of 200 orginal northern 45s but he wouldn t split the box up and wanted £80,I didn t have the cash and never saw him again .......... I still can t forget.

Haha LOL. If you had a "New Killer Joe" - Benny Golson on a label called Mel Bay, I reckon that's rarer than Willie Kendricks! I've never heard of it and I know about this stuff (mostly). I wasn't aware of a U.S. 12" - I thought the ONLY 12" was the UK one. I was under the impression that it was a Columbia recording as we first started playing it of the U.S. Columbia album and then it was issued on UK CBS on 12"........

Yep, that sounds like the one Kevin. Lightish blue with a black overprint and like a mini book I seem to recollect. Does it have a psychedelic-type picture of a vinyl junky on the front LOL? I'm sure there's quite a few future goodies in there but I can't remember what they were.....

If there's any obvious cheapo clinkers in there (and there will be) I'm sure you'll let me know LOL.....

Haha LOL. If you had a "New Killer Joe" - Benny Golson on a label called Mel Bay, I reckon that's rarer than Willie Kendricks! I've never heard of it and I know about this stuff (mostly). I wasn't aware of a U.S. 12" - I thought the ONLY 12" was the UK one. I was under the impression that it was a Columbia recording as we first started playing it of the U.S. Columbia album and then it was issued on UK CBS on 12"........

Are you sure you weren't temporarily mad mate?

Colin Curtis was playing a US Columbia 12 of TNKJ , along with the BG album , for the track " Hesitation " ..........

The album turns up now and again , but I have not seen a copy of the 12 since the one Colin had .......

I was gutted that i couldn't get all the tunes i wanted,many years ago...but when i started collecting records at 14 and stopped at 21,i had some nice bits that i now wish i had kept!!!!

(don't we all)i was getting records of J Manship,Richard S,J Anderson,Ian clarke.......etc....spending all my pocket money.

Had things like Professionals,billy woods jimmy mack,jades,eula cooper,shawn robinson,frankie beverly and so on,i would be worth a fortune now.....and living a life of luxury...

I stopped as i had several wants that i thought i would never get....i could if i had more dosh....they were Inspirations-no one can take your place & Magnetics-when i'm with my baby,the other was robby lawson which i got only to sell 3 days after getting...could also have had Don Gardner!!!!!for swop on robby.......and cash!!!!

Does anyone know what these fetch now?

Oh well i moved on into property and motorsport which is just if not more expensive as too collecting northern soul records!

Now living a different life of luxury in spain.....coming to uk to see old friends and sell a few more bits found in the loft......still gonna keep ISSUE of tobi legend.....how rare is it now!????its left in my will for Dave Thorley.....

Now i look at all the prices of tunes today,where does all the money come from,and its amazing J mansip is still finding NEW MINT records 30+ years old!!!!great man. ...well very rich man now....

Off to the beach to try and forget all those records GIVEN away!!!!for peanuts...

Given the choice of owning a Robbie Lawson but having to live in rainy old England (where it's 75 degrees as I write this), or not owning a Robbie Lawson and hanging on the beach in Spain, I know which one I'd go for LOL....

Anyway, too risky having rare records in Spain with the sun and all. Who wants a slightly sun-warped Robbie Lawson anyway....?

And I'll have that Tobi Legend if you like. Dave's rich enough LOL........

Stranger things have happened. I found a U.S. 12" of "Nightlife" by Blair on a small label out of Buffalo called Solar Sounds a couple of years ago so I guess anything's possible.....

I've not got the best memory in the world by a long way but i'm sure it was on Mel Bay "THE NEW" Killer Joe, only ever had one jazz funk track on the lable and i'm prity sure that was it can't recall my copy being on CBS at all ,........ saying that i've had a few 12" jazz funk tracks over the years

About 12 years ago I was new to this rare soul lark and chanced upon a Bill Brandon "Streets got my lady".

Didn't like it much at the time (must have been deaf!) and swopped it for Donnel Pitman "your love is dynamite".

At some point most of us have had a record in our hands that is very special. Then, for one reason or another, you allow the record to leave the cosy comfort of your collection and then spend the rest of your life regretting the fact that you'd allowed it to slip through your fingers.There's gotta be some GREAT stories here, so let's hear 'em!

issue Fat Fish, starting price $4.99. 1 day to go no bids (he'd listed in rock & roll) and I
