Don't remember that one. The one I had was a large square one in a dark red/maroon I think.

The above design was C.July 1973, originally square as you describe, but intended to be cut to shape. It was screen printed onto a blue nylon fabric, and subsequently fell apart after a wash or two! They were later changed to a different design I believe, and printed onto cotton.

I really like the colours on the Carlton one. (The Carlton was in Warrington and situated above Woolworths!)

Them's the ones! Blue nylonish stuff, just fitted the back pocket of me Karmen Ghias, first wash gone!

I bought two, intending to put one onto a holdall (though tartan bowling bags were the thing in those days!), but I never quite got around to it. As I've mentioned before, by the end of '73 wearing badges was considered to be a bit naff, (at the Cats at least), so the other Va-Va badge survived unscathed, along with several other badges I bought later as souvenirs.

PS. I bet not many of these things survived either! (mid-1974)

The lapel badge below was a more discreet alternative for the Soul fan C.1972

In respect of " rare " patches , I think this one takes some beating .........

Whether it can be classed as collectable , is debatable ........

Hi Rob & Karen - its a while ago since you posted about this - did you find out the answer?
I can remember way back in 1970, the older brother of a good friend of mine was a regular at the Wheel - I can always remember seeing him dressed in white Levis Staprest trousers, gingham checked Ben Sherman shirt,a navy blazer with a gold threaded military style Twisted Wheel Badge & a pair of black loafers, he looked the dogs b*llocks.
He also had a huge collection of early British labelled soul 45s, that me en Louie used to spin when he was away at the weekends.
Now whether or not the Wheel Badge was the first of all soul badges , I could'nt tell you but that limited edition wheel badge did exist.
I believe that Louies brother passed away some time ago & unfortunately I have lost track of Louie, he for sure would have ended up with his brothers collection of records & probably the blazer too.
Last time I ever heard, Louie was an ambulanceman in Bourne Lincolnshire & if you read this Louie please drop me a line ya.

PS: I have been trying to locate a photo of the original VaVas badge mentioned in this thread, I had mine on a jacket that was ripped (rolled) off my back by a gang of skinheads in Arkright Street Nottingham on one of my regular visits to Selectadisc.
Its ok it was only a jacket - at least they left my bags in tact !! rolleyes.gif

Am I right in thinking the origins of the Soul Badge lie in The Twisted Wheel ?

I seem to remember talking Bo***ck's to some "Old Boy" at Wigan one night who was telling me about having clothes made, the trousers, bowling shirts and having a BLAZER made (when did you last see anyone wearing a BLAZER who wasn't at school ?)

I am pretty sure that he told me they had the badges specially made for the Blazer breast pocket, (which is akin to those Royal British Legion ex-servicemen you see marching in the Rememberance Day Parade ) I'm sure he also told me someone had some Twisted Wheel one's made in Limited Edition with REAL GOLD THREAD included ohmy.png

Anybody know if this is true (come on old boy's we need you) If it is anyone got a picture or scan or even their original "Blazer". Surely this would be "The holy grail" of all Soul Patches biggrin.png

Go to Soulmotion.co.uk for a picture of the original HOWARD MALLETT CLUB BADGE as mentioned in Reg,s book. Not many of these exist as they used to come apart in the wash.

Ive still got one the original black background and crossed mallets used to be known as the dinner plate and looked ace on a Barathea blazer.
