Well as per usual it looks like I'm the first to chirp up.

Got back about an hour ago, still buzzing from spending a great weekend in brilliant company.

The venue was awesome, I loved it.

Thanks to Julian for taking me on as his apprentice for the weekend, glad to see that I boosted sales on Saturday afternoon  , the pay was crap, but I loved every minute of seating behind your stall people watching & gossiping.

Lovely to meet the Mexborough lads,Mags, Joy & Yocky (the photo will be appearing soon) & the bosses wife.

Big thanks to Rob, Rob & Karen

Photos in the gallery soon.

See you there next year.

Big thanks to Rob, Rob & Karen

Quite simply it was fantastic. The venue was made for this type of event and the dancefloor was magnificent. Three rooms of soul music spanning the decades had something for everyone.

In my opinion, this venue has got everything you will ever need at a soulweekender. My only gripe would be the 2am finish. Any chance of an extended opening time next year or even one all night session??!!!

Top event. Thanks to the promoters for serving up such a fantastic weekend.

I'd just like to thank Rob & Karen & the rest of the Brid weekender crew (including the Spar staff who were cheerful & helpful all weekend) for producing a quality event. The venue must be one of the best in the country & is perfect for a weekender with three excellent rooms.Couldn't agree more with the earlier comment that a nighter incorporated would be a great addition if possible, even for one of the nights?

Whoever's idea it was to have the rare room I'd to thank them as I spent most my time in there & the standard of tunes was top class.John Parker & Tony Hatfield just blew me away with brilliant tune after brilliant tune, the rest of the dj's I heard weren't far behind either. We've booked for next year already on the strength of that room alone.Didn't get to spend much time in the modern room but the few times I did get in there seemed a great atmosphere with plenty of dancefloor action.

So couldn't think of a better way to spend a weekend.

Til next year.

Cheers Martyn

Hi Kirsty,

I thought i saw you doing a bit of moonlighting on one of the stalls Saturday afternoon.

I must say that the whole weekend was perfect , and that includes the venue , the music and just as important , the weather ( my heads like a beetroot )

I really enjoyed the Friday afternoon drinking session at the Southcliff, meeting people who are regulars on here ( hello Hurry up  )

George ( my dog ) was loving all the attention and all the treats being fed to him ( thanks to Yockie & Joy for the goody bag for him )

Already booked the Hotel for next year , and if I could I would book the weather again too.

Well done to all involved

Tony Hatfield and John Parker (York Soul Club www.yorksoulclub.com) stole the show for us 2 ...they and the other DJs in that room delivered the top notch quality rare soul to an appreciative crowd.

Yeah i would have to agree, it was a funtastic soulfull weekend & the Spa is tailor made & has to be the No1 venue in the UK now

The Spa is right in the heart of B&B land & most folk could get to the venue in about 3 strides  , the Southcliffe hotel right opposite made for a top warm up session each day & even had soul music playing loud & happy hour prices

Hey Steve your head has always looked like a beetroot according to Roy

Personally i think a 2 or 3am finish is just right, any later or allnighters tend to loose folk that over indulge for the next day's session.

dJ's played top spots inc Yocky ( & i have to happily admit i never saw him naked this weekend thank fook  ), Pete Taylor, John Parker & last but not least Pat Brady.

The 2 other rooms ( modun & 70's/xover/rare) could have been a tad larger ( well have you ever seen Martyn Bird dance  ) but i suppose this helps create that fantastic hot sweaty atmosphere we all love :sleep3:

already booked for next year and i would advise you all to do like wise !!!

The music was absolutely mind blowing and without a shadow of a dowt 100% was given by every DJ. (Think it was the shirts !!!!!) Well done Alex, stepping up to Team Brid.

The Southcliffe management have asked me to give a BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG THANK YOU to all, and said what lovely people you all are, they will gladly open their doors for the cheap beer and good food next year if you all care to join them. Yips the Chinese next door also thank you all for your custom too and are very grateful.

I suppose all venue,s will have something different Kev, it was after all the 1st one, must admit considering it was supposed to have a £1M sound system the sound was awfull on a number of occaisions, then again with every DJ being a knob twiddler what do you expect :lol:

Think next years will be 10 times better, always room for improvement mate

"It's 1966 and this is..." Stop...(exit main hall and into the rare room) "Chester Pipkin, and it Must of Been a Broken Heart Attack!"

Anyway, I've asked Gina to do a review of Bridlington Weekender, she is a true music fan in my opinion, enjoying all genres and styles of not only soul, but also every type of music from 1950s to 2008, and her knowledge is vast. Music is huge part of her family life with her father being a well recognised vinyl record collector himself with Blues & Jazz 78s. She is also very aware of the Casino days studying at Lancaster University in the 70s, having friends that regularly attended. She has only been on the scene a few short years while we have been friends, here is her review:-

Impressions of Bridlington

The venue was excellent, with a massive dance floor & plenty of seating. What I liked was that everything was close at hand, with the rare and modern rooms just off the main hall, no hiking up and down stairs. There were several bars, reasonably priced drinks, a caf open throughout serving excellent value food, friendly staff, plenty of toilets. The small rooms had sea views as an added bonus.

My overall impression was that one of the down sides of having a separate rare room this year was that the stuff played in the main room was more well known and obvious. My recollection of last year is that the music played was more of an across the board mix.

On the Saturday night there was a storming double header with Tony Hatfield and John Parker in the rare room. I've got no idea who was on in the main hall at the same time, (thanks to the bottles of Soul Time real ale, I didn't think to find out), but I also enjoyed that couple of hours. I had a great time drifting between the two rooms.

The Sunday afternoon raised some questions in my mind. Was there a DJ competition to see who could play the worst instrumental? Why do you never see the people who wear comedy northern soul costumes in the rare room?

Good isn't it! She may be a little influenced by me on the rare stuff, hey, but that's called progression.

Many Thanks to Rob & Karen and all the DJs connected, and farewell to Mort - 'Shooting From The Hip' wonderful point of view. I've had many a spin to your excellent tunes at Scarborough over the years.

Hi everyone

once again a quick thank you to all who attended the 2008 Bridlington Weekender.

Its almost like starting over again moving into the new venue, but boy what a move it was !

the 2007 weekender gave us the "blueprint" for what we want to do in the future, 2008 gave us the tools and the felxiability to provide the music you've asked for.

The modern room was just right, a room that holds 250 with an Ocean view and located within 20 metres of the Main Floor, as is the "Rare and underplayed ", but that room is slightly larger to allow for the extra bar space. Both Rooms were "Banging" on both nights and we would like to thank Martin , Errol, Tats, Sean, Mad kev, Gazza, Eric, Tony and last but not least the brilliant John Kane for providing some outstanding quality tunes and a brilliant atmosphere. In the other room Mick & Mo for friday, Tony Hatfield, John Parker, Mark Etheridge, John "Travelling man" Alden, Glynn "Mr Versitile" Sissons & Bob the Builder.

I'll talk more about the main floor when i have time, but with nearly 400 of the advance tickets already sold for next year it looks like its heading for an early sell out event !

Pete Taylor, Yockie , Joy, Night Nurse, Pat Brady & Ourselves Rob & Karen Will all have tickets with us at the weekend, we are at East Kirkby friday & Julia's party saturday. If you need them PM us

More later

Just like concur with what most people have said about a cracking weekend in a tremendous new venue

Hopefully the management did not have too many reasons to complain about old folk chucking talc on thier new dancefloor!

Fully understand why it was played safe(ish) Fri in the Northern room with so many to cater for (there were about 30 of us, all with likes and dislikes musically) it's impossible to keep everyone happy, and the floor was packed most of the night.

The numbers were just about right, full but not overcrowded

Hopefully this event will go now go from strengh to strength and not be oversold

Well done to all the organisers for all the hard work, and, we all hope you get well soon Rob

Maybe it was because Mags held him down & made him get his wallet out to buy me & her a pint each, that he owed us from last year.

There was much grumbling & cries of "Bring me the change, bring me the change".

It was much appreciated though Rob, hope you are better soon

PS whilst you're doing nowt get typing a revue up of the weekend, that will keep you busy ! :D

Rumor has it you asked Wicksy if he fancied going in't Modden Room for 1/2 an hour & he had to get out of it somehow

Get thee sen back on thee feet soon ya hear mucka

Anyway what can I say about the Brid weekender - simple really. If you were there you know how good it was & if you were'nt just get booking for next year as it's going to sell out well in advance for sure.

Quite simply a stunning venue & musically everybody got exactly what they wanted.

All 3 rooms were buzzing all weekend & it was a joy to be part of it all.

Thoroughly enjoyed both my spots in the Modern room & it was nice to spin a few late 70's things in there that I normally don't play out.

Also enjoyed the Friday spot apart from the 5 minute tumbleweed moment thats still baffling me (Rob, you know what I mean).

Know John Kane sometimes lurks on here so if you see this tell ya mate Graham he'll have to offer more than his car for the Muthafunkaz remix

On the subject of John Kane he really took the roof off the Modern room on both nights but so did everybody else involved.

Also enjoyed Mick & Mo's Friday spot in the underplayed room. Did'nt spend as much time in there as i'd have liked to due to DJ'ing in the Modern room but when I did venture in it was heaving.

Same goes for the main room. Still no finer site than a full floor in full flow & what a floor.

Saw it on Friday afternoon before the crowds did there stuff on it & got to be honest & say it's without a doubt the best dancefloor I have ever seen.

Did spend Sunday night in there & even ventured onto the floor a couple of times & anyone who knows me also knows how rare that is in a Northern room so it must have been a bit special.

Roll on next year,

Mart...

 Well what a weekender - thoroughly enjoyed the whole event - all 3 rooms with excellent dance floors - music to suit all tastes - something for everyone. What more could you possibly want. I wanted to be in all 3 rooms at the same time so as not to miss anything  We had a great time and all for £20 bargain or what.:lol:thumbup.gif

A GREAT BIG Thanks to ROB, ROB and KAREN always ready to greet us with a smile - thank you all for a great weekend - Enjoyed the sing song on Sunday, but its not easy hitting them high notes :D Next year we should get everyone in the room in front of the stage for a school photo (so to speak) - something to look back on when we are much older (we could then have a session on soul source to try and name everyone).

Met some lovely people - will never be able to remember all their names ----- sign of middle age...............

We've got our tickets for next year and looking forward to it already. :D

Rob - Sorry to hear you missed the finale - hope you are feeling better and are on the mend now. Will see you soon.

ps. The bouncers said what a nice crowd of people we were

Thanks once again mawahhh :D
