Hitched back from Yate to High Wycombe one Sunday morning with him. Prior to Matt Bianco, he was in Blue Rondo A La Turk with Tony Gordon - well known character on the scene and superb dancer (is he still around?). I met him at Hinkley, at one of the live shows in the Leisure Centre. He said he was inone of those bands, and was ever so slightly miffed I hadnt heard of them. Someone told me that Kenny 'Settle down now' Goodwin used to go to the Wheel. I'm not sure if I imagined it but I'm sure I once saw Duncan 'Chase Me' Norvell at the Brit once - he was there with Sue Pollard who did some incredible spins if I remember right. Just Googled the band and they came up on some mp3 download site (none of their tracks available though). I'd forgotten that Tony Gordon performed under the stage name Moses Mount Bassie! Also forgot they did a cover of I Spy For The FBI which I'm sure I saw them do on telly, the Tube I think. Anyroad, you can find Tony Gordon's comments about the Northern scene in the back of Russ Winstanley and Dave Nowell's Soul Survivors book about the Casino. I certainly saw his Style Council sidekick and still a collaborator with the Weller collective, Mick Talbot - the original Merton Parka. Also used to see the chap from Jo Boxers stomping the floor down there at that time too. What about Dexy's frontman, Kevin Rowlands. West Midlander, said to have gone to Wigan. "Back in 68 in a sweaty club......O Geno!" Number of them here in sunny South Wales remember Steve Harrington, alias Steve Strange of Visage fame. Yes, Mick Talbot was at 100 club (early '80s) - only the once though I think - his brother was more of regular (at the time). Seem to recall Mick Hucknell talking about the Casino on TV once. Met Kevin Rowland once when working for a high st record shop, he was being dragged around by a record company rep to Gallup shops to promote his awful solo album - I was playing the Charley re-issue of the Randy Brown album which he took a like to and I tried chatting to him about 'northern' but he wasn't too interested - he was quite a misery actually! It was all charbusters Motown. I wouldn't had minded normally, but they took off my Pheonix modern tape to play his rubbish !! Maybe someone later told him about the Casino.. I assumed he had heard the words, but was totally clueless to what they meant. Which is obvioulsy fine. Apart from doing a cover of money's too tight to mention, why would he need to know anything. And the lad (sorry mate useless with names) who is in the orange adverts with the wise Oriental man. The Northern boy is the one who 'translates' the old boys words. He can be seen dancing near and sitting on the 100 club stage regularly. I think he is in some comedy prog, but if its on after 9pm, I am generally asleep. Opps is that the time. I do believe he did a radio show in the 70s from Wigan. Who can confirm? Any details on the show - format, tunes, stuff like that? John Peel fronted a Series on Radio1 in about 1973 about underground or "cult" music scenes, or something. One was about Northern and a certain Mr Levine was interviewed as the expert, and some tracks were played. The only two I remember were "Love On A Mountain Top", which became a hit soon after, and the sublime "I Just Can't Live My Life". Peely later declared the Northern scene the only true underground, and he became a momentary Northern, and Linda Jones fan, playing tracks by her quite often until he discovered something else. Also saw her again at Walthamstow where she guest djed. She lives in the next road to my cousin and he says he sees her and never says hi, but will when sees her next.
