ref extras

put my stats down on the form and didnt think id here anything to be honest..being a stocky guy so to speak

got my call (surprisingly) from the guys the other day when i was at Thorpe Park ...and have been asked to go along for 2 days..

bit concerned in one sense but what a chance to be in a movie about the venue ive drooled over for 27 years!

we'll see how it goes!

I reckon you'd pass for a young Brian Rae mate

200 fat blokes = 1000 young extras. It's a saving.

If people currently on the soul scene were to be extras, the rest of the country would be thinking how bad it was up North in the mid seventies. Teenage obesity and baldness rife.

 Didnt apply to me (not the last time I checked anyway!)

ah well ..have to make the most of it wont we...im practising at breathing in as we speak!

lol

This film is going to be hilarious, no disrespect Mark but i don't think you're gonna get away with looking like a skinny 16 year old speeding his nut off to 'Time will pass you by' excuse the pun.

The only possible way i can see this film looking authentic is to get 1,000 teenage dancers in & people like Keb etc to advise on the dancing, if there's loads of 40 upwards bald blokes it's gonna look a tad embarrasing no matter how good the make up department is!

HAD a real giggle about this thread on Sat night at the 100 club. How to transfer what we did then and some of us still do now to the big screen.?

THEN: travelled from Redruth in CORNWALL approx 10 hours usually in a transit van, spent half the nite chasing round the place, which was filthy, seeing and TALKING to friends, then dancing the rest of the time. Then 10 hours back in the van swapping DJ playlists and who bought what!!! Wigan Casino just another Saturday nite out!!!!!!!

NOW: travelled from Beverley, East Yorkshire, dropped into Selby to pick up friends then onto Milton Keynes to pick up another friend. Down to Oxford Street, LONDON, to the hallowed 100 club. Spent most of the nite chasing round the place TALKING to friends and dancing the rest of the time. Then 3and a half hours back in the car swopping DJ playlists and who bought what!!! 100 Club, just another Saturday out for us.!!!!!!!!!!

Whenever anyone ever asks me WHY? I just answer "ITS WHAT WE DO!"

NO ONE could be expected to understand quite what we do. But we have already made plans for next Saturday to meet up with friends and go from BEVERLEY down to the alniter at BERKLEY POWER STATION in BRISTOL to do it all again.4 and a half hour drive, most of the nite chasing ............ think you get the story of our lives!!!!!!!!!

You couldn'd make it up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By line: KEB flew out to the Phillapines Sunday after the 100 club so alas no dancing from him.

regards to all and see some of you Saturday. KAREN BURKE

Its gonna be strange with all these productions coming to the screen in the next couple of years.. Will they be compared against each other with the Northern soul theme running through them all???? or stand up on there own with the seperate storylines??? time will tell as they say...

This makes it more important to get it right folks because any that fall short on detail could be put to the sword by the people on this scene... ...Will this film benefit from being the first one out or will the others learn from its mistakes.. Its gonna be a real talking point on this forum and many others for a long long time..

The call for extras could become a real feature on here , maybe yet another section Mike :P

I hope this scramble of all the film makers will bring a possitive outcome.. But a possitive outcome could be the money made??? and to us it would be more about the portrayal of something that we love so dear... The best outcome would be that its make shit loads of cash and its a great story and soundtrack too..

Yes time will tell indeed...

I'm a bald, 40+ bloke, and that's why I'm not going (apart from that, I don't want to miss Northampton v Millwall). Mind you, I still weigh the same as I did when I was 20 so with a decent wig and sympathetic lighting and being shoved to the back, I may get away with it. wink.gif

Anyway Simon, this begs the question, will I be welcome at any of your do's?? :D

Of course you'd be welcome Maark, i am also 40 although i do still have a head of hair!

Nothing against bald 40+ blokes just think if this film is gonna try & reflect Wigan Casino then it should show it as i believe it was i.e. young people living for the weekend not middle aged people shuffling around.

Leonard Whiting? Did you know he did a great version of Walter Jackson's "Thats What Mamma Said" a few years earlier on Pye...he only sounds like a young teenager but it's a great arrangement.

Oops-I only just spotted this! Yes, Leonard was my neighbour. Did he really?

Hello all

Today was our first day of shooting at Kings Hall. It's gone really well, everyone is hyped and equally mesmerized by the quantity of work we have to do over the next 5 weeks. The thread very recently has been full of mirth, and it's great to see that so many forum users will actually be on-set over the next two weeks. Fantastic!

In response to those who have been less than pleased with the idea of us making the film, and to those who are angered by the film's presence on this forum, I have a message from director Shimmy Marcus...

--------

A view from the trenches:

My name is Shimmy Marcus and I am the Director of 'SOULED OUT'

Following weeks of speculation, assumption, rumour, gossip, sniping, bitching, arguing, pleading, and some quite outrageous accusations, I have decided (against better advice) to break my silence and respond to some of the posts on this forum. Why? Because despite what some of you may think, we actually do care about this film. We're not a Hollywood machine only in it for the cash, we are a small, enthusiastic, bunch of independent artists, dedicated to our craft of making extraordinary films that move people on an emotional level.

Obviously I'm a little too busy to respond to each individual post (we start filming today) so I'm posting this general message in hope that it will put an end to all the speculation, and set the record straight once and for all. Here are the FACTS:

This is not a Documentary. It is a fictional drama.

I am not interested in making money, I am interested in making the most amazing film I can.

EXTRAS

Extras are not being threatened at gun point to appear in the film. They have freedom of choice as to whether they want to be a part of it or not.

Extras are not required only for the Casino Scenes, but for many other scenes in the film which take place away from the Casino. This includes babies, and pensioners.

DANCING

Our lead actors/dancers have been training 7 hours a day, 6 days a week, some of them for 6 weeks now. They have trained so hard we've had one in hospital, and another in physio, such is their dedication. They have two dance tutors (1 was a Casino regular) and two choreographers constantly putting them through their paces.

RESEARCH

In an effort to make sure all scenes or references to the Casino are completely authentic, we have consulted over 50 people who were regular Casino goer's as well as countless others from the scene. Russ Winstanley, Kev Roberts, Keb Darge, Elvis Davis (Costume Designer), David Barrow, Reg Stickings, Yogi,

Anton Ludwig, Dave Evison, Eddie Pillar, to name but a few.

Yes, we've seen all the out-takes from the This England documentary as well as plenty of other footage, as well as countless others sources for research.

We have attended numerous all nighters, including the recent one in the Kings Hall featuring almost 1,000 people.

MUSIC

We are consulting countless people connected with the music side of the scene, and the soundtrack is not finalised. It is NEVER finalised until after the editing has been completed, and even then, further changes are often made.

We have been in consultation with a major music clearence company for over 3 years, and are also working with various Major AND Independent labels sourcing and clearing music. We have a database of over 22,000 songs at present. Apologies if we've missed a few.

This film is not about the Original Artists. It is not a film biography. These Artists will be credited in the film where their music appears, and they will receive plenty of royalties under the strictest copyright laws, unlike the money they lost from countless bootleggers.

If the film proves to be a popular success, they will invariable encounter greater record sales. Hopefully all Northern Soul artists will get much greater recognition, and financial rewards which is the very least they deserve for giving the world such beautiful music. And they did give it to the world, for the whole world to hear. That's what artists do.

PUBLICITY

We haven't come on to this forum for publicity. You people are the first in the world to find us, we don't need to publicise with you. We joined the forum in the hope you could contribute positively. As crazy as it sounds we hoped you might even get behind us. Or at least wait until the film was out before baring your teeth!

AUTHENTICITY

If you believe that I shouldn't make this film because I wasn't at The Casino, then I guess Spielberg should never have made Schindlers List, Attenborough shouldn't have made Ghandi, and George Lucas should never have made Star Wars (I don't think he lived in the future.)

I don't understand how some of you can complain that we don't know our arse from our elbow, when, judging by this forum, so many of you are fighting amongst yourselves, contradicting each other, and find little to agree upon. If this film takes off, it is you people the world will be coming to, to find out more. Show them some love. Isn't that what this is all about?

AND FINALLY

I want to thank those of you who have offered us good wishes, and are reserving judgement until you see the film. There are a great many genuine people out there who love this music and this scene, and believe only good things can come from sharing it with as many people as possible. Isn't that what we do when we hear a great song? Share it with others?

We will continue to work as hard as we can to make an amazing film. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm required on the set. See y'all in 5 weeks.

Shimmy.

Dont think anymore needs to be said from the Production team.

Why do I get the feeling that there still will be some who are unhappy with this response.

Still these people would win the Lottery and moan they had to count it!

I for one think the whole concept of the film sounds great, Good luck with shooting.

I think most people will appreciate the sentiments expressed by the director in his post above. I believe it was the right thing to do and has addressed many of the reservations people might have harboured about this project.

The comment regarding the soul scene tending to bicker amongst itself reminds me of moves to stop professional ice-hockey players fighting on the ice. One renowned brawler commented that "they could take our sticks away and give us feather-dusters and we'd still find a reason to fight." I think it's a bit like that on the soul scene too: it seems to attract a lot of abrasive contrarians who could quite easily start an argument (I'm not really talking about full-scale violence here) in a proverbial phonebooth with very little provocation or justification;

The scene has long provided a convenient backdrop (no pun intended) for sniping and one-upmanship. I hope this is reflected in the script as a lot of the fun to be had over the years arose from this very point.

Shimmy.

MUSIC

Hmmm.... you lot keep harking on about the soundrack never being finalised until after the editing has been completed, which may be true, what do I know about film making.

But no one has asked you WHAT songs you are going to use in the film - only whether you are going to use the ORIGINAL recordings by the ORIGINAL artists.

And from your reluctance to answer that simple question, its looking like it's going to be Duffy and Weller after all then.

On the bright side - if the film turns out to be a flop - why not turn to a career in politics, you are all very good at talking a lot and yet saying very little.

Well good luck to you I say and you do have the support of the majority of people on the site.

Yes I think the majority have expressed their support for this project.

My name is Shimmy Marcus and I am the Director of 'SOULED OUT'

Following weeks of speculation, assumption, rumour, gossip, sniping, bitching, arguing, pleading, and some quite outrageous accusations ..

Shimmy.

Where were you people the first time we debated this subject?

I suppose it is thoughtful that the writer and the production chappy have joined this forum because they care what people think.

Care in some part from the director also for his statement. However I feel a little unsettled by being judged from afar by a non member. Fighting amongst ourselves? I've always seen it as lively debate! Also 'little to agree on'? There are many forums and many aspects of the scene we discuss agree and disagree on. In the final analysis we agree we all love soul music!

As said and in conclusion best of luck with the film, I hope it is a raging success and I can't wait to see it. But don't think for a second you can show up out of nowhere, judge us and tell us what to think. We were debating all things northern soul long long before the Souled Out film and we will continue to do so long after it has passed.

Wear that flat hat of yours and they'll give you a whippet and a speaking part!

I hope you have a great weekend Andy.

Cheers, Ady.

There is a chance I might not make it now as the job Im doing at the moment requires me to work this weekend. I might have to pull a sicky for a few days I will probably get sacked as they knew I wanted this weekend off.

Im seriously tempted to just go and screw the job it's only a crap one anyway. How many chances do you get in life to be in a film about Northern Soul?

I will put on my cap and get thinking

Good luck with it all. Sounds like a wondeful project.

My only advice to you as someone on the Northern Soul scene is to not have the dance sequences at the Casino accompanied by the music of Duffy or Amy Winehouse as this would not go down well with the Soul fraternity.

You probably know this all ready but just thought I would say it as some people on here have voiced concern that this may happen.

All the best,

Andy
