i just got P.M. from film chappys and wrote them a reply wishing them luck . when i tried to send it back it failed saying it coudnt find any member of that name , this seems typical looking back . all they seem to have done is come on forum post adverts for extras and leave . they dont stick around long enough, even if only for a few minutes,to have a conversation re. this topic. is it any wonder people feel apprehensive and frustrated .

No Ballgowns Russ Just birminhgam bags with big square pockets. big enough to fit a school book in any way. loads of buttons to do them up, funny they used to melt when you put them anywhere near an iron.

Ah the 70s thank god for the music as the clothes were shocking.

what about me, i used to wear a pair of my older brothers green flares to the all-nighters, as we couldnt afford the spencers yet. puting a couple of soul patches on the sides didnt make it any easier! and yes, the buttons...the shame!

Despite you getting your message through eventually, I reckon you are bang on the money with what you've said.

They have come on here for one thing and one thing only - and that is to get the people they need to dance in their film - and to get them to do it for nothing.

They wouldn't give this site the time of day otherwise.

I did a lot of extra work and some acting back in the 80's and worked on a few feature films and did a lot of TV. All these people are interested in is THE MOVIE and getting it to the screen as cheaply as possible. Renting a gullible crowd for nothing is typical. If anyone thinks they are going to have a wonderful day dancing they are sadly mistaken. They will probably spend most of the day standing around waiting whilst dialogue scenes are completed those that are in shot will be expected to 'dance' with no music then they will overdub the sound after. At some point they will be expected to dance but more than likely they will have to go over the same shot again and again because of getting varied camera angles on the same action. They will condense this all down to a few minutes across the film as the story develops. This is not a movie about the scene it is a love story set against the back drop of the Northern Soul scene in the north during the 70's, think 'Kes' with some (Hopefully!) good music! Nothing we say or do will change the way they portray or produce the film. This has all been decided in pre- production meetings as was useing this forum to drum up interest.

i wrote a daft message to beeks in the style of a script and he posted it in the previous film thread . it was about media types discussing making a film abut northern soul at a dinner party in islington . i noticed that after beeks had posted it they started a new thread ,this one. it wasnt meant to be taken seriously,we where just having a giggle. think it hit a nerve though cos the "researcher' mentioned it in some f his posts .

Earlier on in this thread someone mentioned "getting the period right", if the film bods would like an example (IMHO and all that) of getting a period right they could do worse than watch "Control" - the film about Joy Division.

In an early scene they had some chap in wide kegs (not baggies), a tank top and a leather bomber, set in 1974 it was absolutely spot on.

edit: The hair cuts were just right too so can I suggest that all the freebie extras have their hair cut correctly before you film?

edit2: The scene in the chemistry lab woke me up, bloody spit of my old school chem labs.

Because you probably hit the nail on the head so they panicked! LOL biggrin.gif . If you think about it most of the people involved in the movie will be young and probably not even born when it all happened how the hell are they going to get it right? They can have as many 'advisers' as they like unless they were there it's gonna be crap! Like the man said 'Footsie revisited'....................

Almost wasn't going to make this but am now.

I was supposed to be emailed the details from the extras person but havent got them yet.

Anyone know what time and where we have to be in Stoke on Saturday?

Anyone reccommend a cheap but cheerful Hotel or guest house or b&b in the area?

if the film bods would like an example (IMHO and all that) of getting a period right they could do worse than watch "Control" - the film maybe they should employ anton corbin the maker of control his first film but been making music videos since early eighties mybe late seventies and worked with new order apparently he not only done the homework on ian curtis ,joydivision and life in general 1970,s northern england but employed a guy who wrote a book on ian curtis to virtually live with ian curtis wife so he got all the detail spot on form the horses mouth if you will , I guess im trying to say that to get this film right he should have as many people involved in the scene back then djs , dancers , etc etc giving him constant input from every angle otherwise alot of people are going to rip it to bits unfortunately imo ,and imho it is just a film its not real life real life is at the soul nights every weekend up and down this country and beyond for me this friday at dundee soul club my education continues

Soulfully Kieran

What the article or The Sentinel? (hey you thats the broadsheet we grew up with in our house! laugh.gif )

Have to say though the line "Souled Out tells the story of Stoke City fan Joe McCain"

gave me the shivers.... nobody from the production team mentioned that little gem when they phoned me the other day! Agggggh! I'm now hoping any shots of me end up on the cutting room floor!

We will be at the Kings Hall with flyers, looking for young dancers and people with the right feel.

We are not really looking for people over 25, although we can be a bit flexible with age. We are looking for young people into soul.

Next thing they know - filming is about to start and they've got no 'young dancers' or 'people with the right feel'.

So what do they do?

They come on here pretending they want to hear our ideas and are keen to take on board any suggestions we may have - when really, they don't give a toss what we think and are only interested in using this site and its members.

But at least Elvis Davis gets it

The key was to stay cool while you danced, sometimes for about two hours non-stop.

I think we all know it started in Detroit, Chicago, Philadelphia etc. etc. and not bloody Wigan Casino, as the years go by the whole ethos of this scene is diluted and manipulated often to suit whoever wishes to jump on the bandwaggon, I'm sure the producers of this film have every good intention of making a decent movie but going by this thread they are up against it from the off certainly not gaining much trust or support from the very scene they are trying to capture, having met many media, television types over the years one fatal flaw that these people have is they jump into a project no matter what the subject full on with what seems on the outside a very genuine passion yet their true agenda is nothing more than at best a very narrow overview of the topic or subject matter, the passion is often short lived during their current project and as soon as it's done they move on to the next thing, the danger is they think they know best and this is often not the case.

These people have the skills and knowledge to make a film which we don't, it would be nice if we did and could tell it like it is but that's never gonna happen, all we can hope is that this production turns out to be an enjoyable well made authentic tribute to the period and the scene, it's in their hands if it's gonna be a hit or something which goes straight to DVD, time will tell but remember it ain't real it's a movie as we all know what the real deal is....see photographs.

Regards - Mark Bicknell.
