I repeat for the millionth time Soul Police etc is just an excuse used by people with an inferiority complex, sometimes justly.

Or perhaps its just people with a sense of humour...a genuine love of soul music without the trappings of 'I know better syndrome' who actually have more emotions than hate, bitterness and self importance...but thats just an opinion...and like record taste...opinions vary wink.gif

How do you define the trappings of "I know better" could it be someone who comes on here cussing and swearing and telling everyone how much he knows and how he has forgotten more than anyone knows, and he knows more about black music than anyone else in the world, or are you saying that was just a sense of humour now.

Jocko...Jocko...how poor your memory is...if it wasnt for your superiority complex that arguement would have never materialised in the first place...he who casts the first stone...I merely retaliated when provoked...yet you have the audacity to berate me for it hahahaha rolleyes.gif:D:D

Plot schmot - all these points have been raised and questions asked in the other thread, why we need two, I don't know..

Yes there has to be a plot but does romance have to be the central theme?

As stated questions have been asked, but here's another - can you scrap this one and start again?

You want a different story? Write your own script instead of knocking those who have put in the time (7 years did he say?)

effort, care, and obvious devotion required to produce something like this. So easy to knock and criticise.. so much harder

to get up and actually create something.

You cant have people 30-40years old, portraying Wigan?! How can it then be historically accurate, if its got the whole demographic of its punters so wrong?

Who said the extras needed in the 30-40 years old group were to be used in the casino?

Was there nobody in England over the age of 20 in 1974?

Like has been said before by a few on here that probably went by the by, before it went off on a tangent,

It aint about bitching and backbiting its about making sure that just for once someone who wants to invest in a film about our scene does it properly with the right music for the right era with the right scenes and portrays it as it was.

Surely those that have a vested interest and have done for x number of years, can make comment, because after all they are the ones that have kept this scene going for as long as it has, they are the ones that have invested time, money and effort over the 30++ years, they are the bloody gate keepers and have the right to reply. Sadots original play once upon a time in wigan was done the right way the first time, this is why many of us respect what he did, because it was done with dignity and respect to a scene that many loved and still love.

All too often, this scene of ours has been shafted by those that want to make a fast buck off the backs of others, whom have had a life long interest in it, and if we wanna protect it then why not?????

Correct me if i'm wrong but as much as people want it to be a film 'about our scene' so they can play critic, IT ISN'T a film about NS, it's a 70's love story with some NS going on,

However it turns out does it really matter? Surely it's not the end of the world if it's a bag of sh*te?

I won't be losing any sleep anyway, i will have work to get up for,

Not really, how many sailed on the titanic? many many stories require few central roles with plenty extras, kinnell how many extra's in the millions of war films that have been produced where the main storyline was a love story?

There really is other things in life besides NS you know, :D

BTW Was Romeo and Juliet a film? maybe it was i'm no film buff but don't think i ever saw it,

The versions directed by Franco Zeferelli and Baz Luhrmann are the two best known.

My (much older!) friend was Romeo in the 1968 Zeffirelli version.....but I digress.

It sounds quite a tall order to get 1000 unpaid extras....but it is still the school holidays so you never know!

alledgedly on the remake of the titanic quite a few scenes were digically enhanced ohmy.gif Now can you imagine that in 'souled out' which interestingly enough by the look of the title might just have something to do with soul after all :D

Yep, but i bet ya a wigan patch it ain't a documentry about soul, i bet it's a love story, not intended to educate anybody about anything soulful, just to be a chick flick about love n soppy stuff like that, but a period love story, ffs it's a film, not a history lesson,

And it don't matter, good film - bad film - let's go to work

Doh! Yeah it was Zeferelli, of course. Polanski did Macbeth not Romeo and Juliet. I've seen the bloody thing a million times, all three in fact sad.gif

Hey Joan,

BRAVE.....very much so....to come on here and be slaughtered, from people who are griping about a FILM, not a documentary I may add....this man has tried to re-assure everyone that the production will be as real as possible to the era, when in reality he doesn't have to acknowledge this forum or anyone on it.

As for publicity GOOD LUCK to him.....maybe some extra publicity from the Nationals about all the negativity on here might be helpful also, the numbers at venues are dropping, just like us older ones, so maybe this will entice some new blood through the doors to keep this scene alive when we have all gone.

I really dont get it...why people are so angry and negative about this....ffs its only a film not a personal biography. Why cant everyone accept that, go see it and then if it fails to impress....feel free to slaughter it.

With respect

Phyllis

You think they are brave - I think they're not.

You think this man has tried to re-assure everyone that the production will be as real as possible to the era - I think he's done nothing of the sort.

But does that matter?

I think not.

You think this film will entice new blood onto the scene - well, you could well be right.

Won't we have fun when they turn up to their first 'proper' soul do expecting to hear Duffy and Paul Weller! laugh.gif

You say you don't get it why people are so negative about this film?

I don't think people are being negative Phyllis - people are passionate that's all. Some a lot more than others it seems.

I couldn't give a toss what the story is about to be honest.

The only thing I care about is whether they use the ORIGINAL RECORDINGS by the ORIGINAL ARTISTS.

Something I thought everyone would care about.

Boy was I wrong on that one.

this duffy /weller shit is getting tedious !!...how many times are they gonna have to tell us they WANT to use original recordings for the dance scenes but its all legal shit you cant just pick your fave songs and use them....

i dont think newbies will go to soul nights expecting to hear weller and duffy(although i can remember people saying she had been played at some) anymore than you go to a scooter do and ask for 'the real me' by the who !!

we all want the film to be 'real' and show us in a good light but even if its shit its not gonna stop those already going to nites and however bad it is its not gonna make youngsters laugh at us anymore than if they go to a nite today and see there overweight bald dads shuffling around the floor tring to a spin or backdrop without falling over !!.....wont be surprised if some see the film ,like it,go to a do and think maybe not....especially if they make it as good as you all say wigan was....most of todays nites will be a bit of a dissapointment to em

well thats my head out of the trench...let me have it !!

Leonard Whiting? Did you know he did a great version of Walter Jackson's "Thats What Mamma Said" a few years earlier on Pye...he only sounds like a young teenager but it's a great arrangement.

It's really sad to hear so many angry voices on this board. I guess this is often the way with fans of one particular musical scene, when other people use that scene to create something. Everyone on the production is working like mad to make a film which everyone involved can be proud of, and which brings enjoyment to as many people as possible without compromising on the experiences and wishes of those who created the scene in the first place. I really really hope you guys like the film!

To answer someone's question earlier about costume - approximately half of all extras will be costumed, all absolutely fantastic pieces - a mixture of vintage and custom-made items. Elvis Davis the costume designer knows his stuff!

Thanks for answering that question and sorry for any disparaging remarks. Just that unwarranted media interest can spark initial feelings of trepidation and mistrust. When I think of folk like Robert Elms and Trevor Nelson given license to speak with what what seems authority on a subject they have little or no knowledge of. Even profiteers from within the scene selling our wonderful music down the river for a bucket of greasy fried chicken.

That said I wish you well with the film and I look forward to watching it.

*******************************************************************************

Think you are very brave to come on and answer peoples questions and in my book that warrants a bit of respect. Like others have said you could have just gone ahead and made your movie with no consideration for anyone. People as you are aware, are very passionate regarding the music and artists, and I think you have, hopefully, answered their questions honestly.

I am looking forward to seeing the movie and hope that production/directors and actors do this wonderful northern soul scene justice, ie in recreating the passion, atmosphere and lifetime friendships that went along with it, as Roddy mentioned in his post, demographs are also important as people travelled from all over the country to attend this venue, I am sure you are aware of this through your team. And last but not least, music policy ie original artists as previously mentioned.....keep it real and of course, credit where credit due.

*******************************************************************************

If you read my initial post (above) am sure you will see what I actually said. As regards the negativity, the whole bloody thing is drowning in it.... maybe if the attitude was more positive and less aggressive people might listen and take note.... nothing worse than bold statements. If people want it to be authentic, why not try helping rather than hindering....and why not do it for free, because as you say its the music thats most important !!! And I think you will find there are more people than you think care about this....but approach it in a more sublte way.

Respectfully

Don't worry too much about it, about 90% of the people on this site were still in their

nappies in 1974 (or not even born) members on this site fall into about 4 catagories,

those who only read the stuff written they are called "Lurkers" they make up about

75% an contribute nothing, then there are "Humourists" mostly very funny but for purposes

to be ignored, then there's the "Chinstroking Purists aka The Soul Police" who will snipe at

anything they feel isn't 10000% pure Northern Soul (in their narrow tunnel like vison/view) they

should be ignored even more so then there's the real soul fans, they'll be the ones

encouraging, giving positive advice, pointing out the pitfalls, etc.

I have to say if I was making a movie about NS I would steer 100 miles clear of this

forum, the ability of a minority to slaughter their conceived enemies is legendary !!

Good luck.

ps how's the Vaseline thing going ???

He missed the fourth, those who went to the Mecca, Torch, Casino (slot venue here) for 5 years - disappeared for 18 years and then came back to tell us how much of a mess we made of their scene in their absence

As a returnee myself, (although I did manage to last out until 1985  ) I can never understand the posters who believe that 5-7 years in the late sixties-mid seventies and then from say 2003 or so ( max 12 years for example,) think they have a bigger right to a say over current goings on than someone who started in the early nineties and has been part of it ever since. It doesn't make sense. Mind you, I never went to the Torch, so maybe my view doesn't count either

I hope its a great success for everyone involved in it and genuinley hope the kids who act in the film do there best to replicate what that great perioid of our lives was all about.

Some of the mid sixties mods Ive spoken to about quadrophinia have sugested it was ok, I thought it was a great film and without question in my top ten of all time, there was and still is something magical about the being one of them boys in the 60's. I wish I could have been part of it.

Then again I spoke to a thirty year old local boy two weeks ago who said he would gladly give up his right arm to have been around 1972/1974 and do the Torch and the Casino

To be accepted the writers need to ensure that all aspects of the era are covered, the gear, the music and the dodgy geezers who would hit you with a hammer rather than look at you.

It wasn;t baggies, badges and addidas hold alls it was Bombers, Bustaids , 100mph 60's black soul music and always/always making sure that eye in the back of your head was working correctly.

One question to the production team, whats the response been to the call for extras, surely if the place ent packed then basically you're fooked?

.

we've had cat food - kfc- nhs-wine adverts.. bloody mentions on corra , plays etc blah blah blah... there is this belief in the media that this northern soul thing is massive and they will attract shitloads of interest. With Who lol, the 2 0r 3 thousand active soulies today or the tens of thousands of people that pretended they went to the casino etc. the nearest this lot ever got to wigan was a bop to frank wilson in the local boozer.

so in other words its not the pot of gold they think it is .. laugh.gif

We would love to be able to pay extras, it's a sticky situation for all involved, and we absolutely appreciate that for some, working without payment is not an option. If we could pay extras it would make the recruitment process a lot easier. Sadly, the film is a micro-budget feature; if we had to pay 1,000 people the film wouldn't be possible to make, which is why we are asking people if they would like to volunteer.

The day will be really good fun, people will get to see the workings of complex dance and crowd sequences being filmed, meet the crew and cast, and get to dress up. It's a really great opportunity to have a bit of a laugh, and for performers to put it on their CV as feature film experience. For young people it will probably be their only opportunity to pretend they're at Wigan Casino too.

We could do with you guys' help to spread the word amongst your nearest and dearest. If you know anyone who fancies being in film, please tell them to get in touch.

Who the hell wants to pretend their at the casino again i went every saturday from 74 onwards and it want that good the high light was searlings set anyway why the casino the bloody scenes moved on where still here why not start the story line with the casino as the starting point and take the main character through till present day that way you could over come the age difference with the extra's . no one can still dance like they did back in 74 as much as i would like to appear in the film i aint gonna . the casino's dead and buried lets leave it that way

Ive applied to be an extra, all thanks to a friend who frequently compliments me on my dancing (thankyou Moddy Simon) if I get chosen, I shall make the most of it and dance my arse off like ive been doing for the past 25 years.
