Is there proof of an authentic link to all things NS (praise be to god) and this rather under performing Scottish league 1 club or this just another sickening case of Youtube youth messing about with something that thEY CLEARLY DO NOT UNDERSTAND AND CHERISH AS THEY SHOULD?

Don't remember anyone from Perth, but there was a big Dundee crowd at Wigan. We got our (moody) tickets for an anniversary from them in the car park - 4th, maybe 5th. Something at the back of my mind says they were from the Hilltown (Hulltoon). It was a long time ago.

I know, I cheated a bit. My dad comes from Kinghorn Road and my mum comes from Rosebank - are these streets still there?

Come on you Arabs!!

Yup, Kinghorn Road and Rosebank are still there - the city is steadily changing though. Student accommodation replacing tenement blocks almost weekly. Bloody students are taking over!

There was a guy from Perth called Ken McDonald who went to all the nighters 'back in the day'. Never knew him personally, however, I inherited his wee soul book of cuttings/patches/signatures from his days of travelling down south - Samanthas, Casino, Torch, etc, etc. Best thing in it was a Casino pass signed by Jackie Wilson.

More recently, there were a group of four or five I used to pick up on the way through to Shotts - Kev & John O'Neill, Mad George, etc. There's an informal mod/soul night runs at the Stagger Inn in Perth which attracts a few of the "I went to Wigan me" folk. I've not been yet but will probably go to the next one.

Thanks for the info - I left in 1958, so it's all a bit vague , but my grandad used to run (I think) The Atholl Arms and also one at the foot of the hill (near the Wellgate?). Then just before he died, the new one (in 1962/63) on the edge of Fintry.

I do and I can name the four Perth guys that were at the opening night at Wigan. The badge that newer post is by a Saints fan club called PSJ who are mostly into soul and indie. Its the same cover as the old Perth City Soul Club which existed at the Corrina, before any of the Dundee clubs (local tiff). If any of you remember the late Ned Jordan from the Dee, he often came to Perth to DJ northern in his youth. British Rail were kind enough to put on an Inverness to London sleeper train which stopped at Wigan Wallgate at a very convenient 12.35. Alas the soul train did not stop at Dundee. C'mon Da Saints.

Well, well Mick, didnt know you were from up that way!! That probably explains your football skills around the Cheltenham League.

Stuart Cosgrove is a St Johnstone and closet Cheltenham Town fan.

..not so closet anymore big Cheltenham fan as its happens...

...although its a small town Perth has a significant soul legacy originally based on a club called the Ingle Neuk which was on the same

management booking circuit as the Twisted Wheel in Manchester and was one of the big original mod clubs in Scotland. I was too young but my sister went and used to come home with US imports, which is where I first got the taste. The house band of the Ingle Neuk was the Vikings led by Alan Gorrie, who along with a couple of Dundee guys morphed into the Average White band, the first white group to top the US soul charts. The 'northern' clubs started later after quite a long period of fighting between Perth and Dundee gangs - Pack, Fleet, Shimmy etc. The biggest scraps were at Perth City Hall when 60s bands like Love Affair, Kinks etc played. Before the northern scene happened, the other venue was the Sally, a hotel/club which featured Midge Ure's band, who did a great cover-version of Archie Bell's 'Here I Go Again (looking for My Hole Again) (sic). That was pandemonium most weekends. That's one reason why we opened the Perth Northern Soul Club, and tried not always successfully to ban the gangs. Perth had no catholic senior seconady school and several Perth guys who went to Wigan were at school in Dundee, at Lawside, so in the spirit of generosity we 'invited' Dundee DJs periodically, as part of the peace process. Billy McKenzie of The Associates often came to our club, and my mate Sparky and his band The RBs were also around too.

A few of us went into writing me to Echoes and then NME, another local girl Sylvia Patterson went to Smash Hits and a younger guy Craig McLean to the Guardian.

Interesting post...and I might add that in the short time on the NS scene I have to say that the Dundee crowd are still very loyal and travel all over Scotland and England to this day.

Also the info about Alan Gorrie was interesting as well, in the 60ts here in Edinburgh he used to come down and perform in a band called Dream Police, Julian Covey's A Little Bit Hurt was their showpiece for what I can remember.

Ned jordan was a legend , though i never knew him from his soul days but rather his football days ...

i believe ned jordan and phil jordan would be one and the same,

i worked with phil for a couple of years as a commercial d.j. here in newquay,i have such fond memories of him, we had some great times together.

never a dull moment with phil, he'd get me into a few scrapes, always a cool dresser, avid collector, great taste in music,

could get you anything you wanted, almost a cool arthur daily, and pure babe magnet.

i last saw him in 1986 at a friends wedding here in newquay, i was devastated to learn a few years later he'd died.

i've shed a few tears over the bugger over the years, i've still got a compilation tape he made for me, on which he had kindly written, this will cost you many pints you miserable english bastard.

ned/phil jordan, my kind of guy.

He was a great house dj as well.

didn't he represent scotland at water polo, i think his dad was national coach at one time.

d..j wise he was all things to all men.

he was here in cornwall in the early 80s working he would like myself blend jaz funk, soul and current club sounds of the day, he once played james wells baby i'm still the same man for me at berties nightclub, announcing to the 300 or so bemused non soulies.

this is for my mate lee on his birthday, it's a great record so dance ya bastards.

i think they'd just been dancing to spandau ballet chant number one prior to that.

he used to get imports sent down from scotland,he was the top boy, way ahead of his time, he lined me up with work ata place called smokies in arbroath, and fat sams in dundee, i never folowed it up, though i wish i'd have accepted his invitations to the united , dundee derby games.

i can still picture is twisted lop sided mug now god rest him, he actually got his facial disfigurement here in newquay, he was dancing about on the pavement, he went into a spin near the curb and a passing volkswagon van caught his face with its wing mirror, removing most of his ear and part of his face, at least that's the story he swore by lol.

you never did know whith him.

My brother was part of "Shimmy" who were to my knowledge 60s mods, this is where I got my intro to soul music, from the records he would bring home, I also attended Lawside Academy and went to primary school with Billy McKenzie who was a good friend of another brother.

Ned Jordan....what a star, attended many soul nights in Dundee, Royal Hotel, Laings and Angus Hotel to name but a few, and who could forget the "Maryatt Hall" allnighters, which was massive to Dundee, Ned and Keb Darge played, they were great friends, and of course Fat Sams when he took over there. We used to all go back to Neds mothers at Quarryknowe when she was on holiday after the soul nights to continue with the sounds.

I also attended my first and only Wigan with Ned although at the tender age of 14, I had told him I was 17...had to, I had been attending soul nights over the last year...lol This for me was exciting and scary, I was petrified.... had to come clean about my age, he just laughed, but I was looked after. Looking back I can see I had a massive crush on him, he had the most gorgeous huge eyes...lol smile.gif

Ned is a very sad loss to the soul scene...rest in peace big guy. xx

With respect

Phyllis

Whilst watching Mr Cosgroves football show one Saturday afternoon during last season, I had a chuckle when his final announcement included the immortal phrase "It'll never be over for me" My Dad asked me what I was laughing at and was told it would take too long to explain it to him !!

Glad to see that you can be a Saintee and a Soul fan as well
