Wigan - Circa 1980 - Who Hung The Fookin Banner

Right had a bit of a chat about this on Simons Cassanova thread...............

It's circa 1980 - Wigan casino. Modern Soul is taking a real foothold - Messrs Searling, Sam etc. There was a growing backlash from the die hards who hated all things modern which resulted in Soul Sam receiving his marching orders from the casino.

So, do you remember the night when the banner "Keep the Faith not the Funk" was hung from the balcony? Were you there? Did you see any suspicious fookers prowling round the balcony, lurking in the darkness with intent? Did you hear any whispers on the grapevine?

Just who did hang that fookin banner? If you do know anything you can post up here or pm Ironside99 in complete confidence. biggrin.gif

A guy I used to knock about with once confessed something very similar to me ... namely he'd hung a banner over the balcony facing the stage with Searling must go written on it, I believe it was about that period in time aswell ...he told me it was a protest at the amount of newer stuff being played at the time  .. not sure if this is the same event but sounds mighty similar to me .. or was this type of thing common place in those days

As far as I remember it seemed to be more aimed at Richard than Sam, as I remember the (Scots?) lads that unveiled it over the balcony did so at the beginning of Searlings set about 2-3am.

We can moan about the Scots for a lot of things, but I am not so sure we can lay this one at their door.

Just didn't think the Scots were in the Stomper club. Maybe some of them on here can shed some light then

I was in the stomper club! But living in Southport at that time so that gets me out of it. The Dundee ones were most dodgy out of the Scots crowd :D

Have found an old Blackbeat dated March 1981 in which Sam talks of his sacking from Wigan "for playing totally 70s and explaining my position in a letter to Black Echoes".

The pieces are starting to fall into place.

So it looks lke it was 1981 then - I thought it was a bit later than 1980. Had some very interesting pms.

A certain northern industrial city has been named by three seperate people.

It's funny Steve - I too can remember it just like yesterday. I 've a few strong leads that I'm following up.

Old Ironside is confident of nailing these fookers - it's just gonna take a little time.

wasnt the naughty crew from wolvo/telford

You could be right mate - I can't remember the actual year. My information to date is taking me north of the midlands.

The truth is always out there - I'm gonna nail the fookers.

As I said earlier, I always had it in my mind that the banner was aimed at Richard not Sam as it, in my mind, was thrown over the balcony just before Richard came on.

I remember it to be '81, which if it was, would prove it.

I'm as certain as my memory will allow that the banner appeared on Sams last night - I can't remember which year it was. I did think 81 - but someone said Sam went the year before?

Anyway, the talk on the night was definitely aimed at Sam so it followed that the banner was aimed at him. Hence me and my mate Mick Bradbury from Boston at the time, doing the petition.

so do YOU know who hung the banner! me thinks it came from the pottewries!

I'm just struggling with the Scottish flag bit - my spot at Wigan, under the staircase on the right hand side put me right underneath where it was hung, so I'm opting out now, I've put my two penneth in and I'll leave it to the real investigators.

I'm not saying it wasn;t a scottish flag Barry - far too early to rule that out! Just that the culprits were not the scotts lads.
