A big thank you to everyone involved in putting this together - and to all the people who said don't bother I'm glad I did'nt listen they must have been to the wrong shopping centre !

it was a superb night yet again....lovely people, great sound system , fab atmosphere...everyone well up for it..

the thing is so many knock it cos of where it is held ?? at the end of the day its huge.. open , and with a great chill out area because of the casino cafe, loads of room to dance, yes its a tile floor, but its really ok, better than some floors ive danced on for sure .... just people getting together for a good time , to have a dance and listen to great music.. ..... northern soul !...

I take it you didnt go last night - perhaps my wording was a bit wrong I know when wigan finished what I should have said was 35yrs plus of northern soul in general not only at the casino - never mind that now a brilliant night was had by the 100's of people out to celebrate the memory of wigan casino - gone but never forgotten !!!

I read the negative comments prior to the event and attended it with an open mind. For years Ive been to different events across the board ie. 100 Club, Wilton, Stoke, Peterborough, Burnley, Darlington, Skegness etc etc etc and have done for years.

If you are a football fan and enjoy travelling around its like going to away matches. Some games you win and some you lose but you go because you dont know what to expect but know you love football.

Basically I went for a night of Nostalgia. Went to Wigan as a youngin from 78 til closure. I thought the Grand Arcade designers have embraced the history of Wigan Casino with a themed eating hall called The Casino Cafe which does Wigan proud in my opinion. Whilst I agree that 'Time Marches On' in life and moving on is an integral part of everyday life, you should never forget your roots and the history that has gone before you.

Forget the politics, It was billed as a night of nostalgia and that was exactly what it was. I for one thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish and I think the 7/800 other punters did as well! (Be interested to know the exact attendance)

I didn't go to recapture Wigan Casino because that was never gonna be the case. I had a lovely evening and the Flirtations live were a pleasure!

After saying i did not fancy it i actually went with my mates from the clowne/retford area as they had a spare place on the bus.Enjoyed it though listening to frankie beverley 4 times and at least 12 other tunes that were duplicated on the night makes my blood boil ,thousands of casino classics and too many not played.the dance floor was surprisingly good though i did see one lass spill some 7up on the floor and rub her shoes on it to slow it down a bit.the flirtations killed it for me they were rubbish but i expected that from a 40 odd year old group,the room had just built up a head of steam then they went and spoilt it,valuable record time lost .no record stands which was a disappointment .bar expensive though no queue to talk of,a few handbaggers though they seemed to enjoy it.

Wow what a nite,

Driving up to the venue and some of the old buildings still there memories a bit better than I gave credit, had been bigging this one up and thought maybe could be left with egg on face but wasnt the case.

It was one of the best Northern nites I have witnessed since the origonal days, crowd may have been a bit older but all the handclapping and they went for it big time, you were just time warped back there, even hair stood on end again!

Top 500 stuff being played and floor full all the way through, djs under strict instruction to keep it as a party nite, a few doubles but will forgive the jocks there getting on a bit.

As a venue it is rather nice,Bit more like being in the 5 star hotels aboad with marble fixtures

lights are dimmed and it is rather palatial compared to many of the venues and the chill out area is the Casino Cafe, which is wonderfuly palatial and has some nice memorabilia on disply.

Floor was hard but shufflers paradise, no talc req

Bar was v fast ,Russ said he would put that right and he did ,£2.50 pint ,bit dear compared to club prices but not bad.

Circa 1400 in, I thought a few more but Russ may be avoiding the tax man on that one, I reckon it was made up of 75% old faces and a lot of youngsters , the ones I chatted to were mainly relatives of the older ones and a few inquisative handbaggers, fair play to Russ I reckon this will be the first nite of Northern for many of these youngsters, welcome to the scene

Flirtations are the most young looking attractive 60 year olds I have ever seen, they did come on when it had built up to an electric atmosphere and they dont really do enough Northern tunes and people just wanted to dance , they gave it there all and there still pretty good singers.

Was worried would the accoustics be any good and presently supprised around the dance area v.good but bit echoey near the bar and upstairs

Dance competition made me laugh, everybody entered, in otherwords everyone was a having such a good time they all carried on dancing, they took it down to final 5 and there was still a load dancing , was cracking up, Sam Evans walked it for me but given to another lad, who am I to argue with sandy Holt the judge..

I reckon to summarise how much we loved it we said we would head back at about two, but "just one more b4 we go" and we were on to 3 b4 8 and still a fair crowd in there, some with tears in there eyes as they remembered what wonderful times they were, and also a time to remember our good friends who are no longer with us

Mmmm.... bit of a difference between the 700 odd in as per two folk who attended and the 1400 plus perhaps some more from an involved person's perspective.... can expect some slight differences from folk, but double ....

I reckon one of the problems were that jocks were playing many requests, between each record you would see loads of people asking for tunes, poss they missed a record when having fag I dont know.

Never one to disapoint.........the whole thing looked absolutely shocking havnt laughed so much at a Youtube funny like that for ages, nearly as good as that kid with the Star Wars light saber thingy, altho' Im genuinely pleased everyone enjoyed it, horses for courses n all that, & if RW was smiling, you all helped acheive his aim, which was to line his pockets a little more, never mind, not much more blood left in the old 'Wigan' stone so make the most of it, when there's no money left in the nostalgia gigs, the promoters like RW will abandon you again, you guys will lose interest & then we can all get on with it properly.........

Baggy trousers n vests n swirly skirts snnnnnnnnnniiiiiiiiiiiiggggggggggggggeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrr, oh dear, sorry shouldnt laugh, if people want to wear fancy dress ???? was there a fancy dress competition with a prize, ooooooppppssss sorry, that must have been the dance comp.

BTW I saw the Flirtations last year at the Kent anniversary gig & they were exceptional......so bad luck there also.

PS I was with a big crowd of Soulies having a good time too........the supreme Hitsville Weekender in Mojacar, my god thats what its all about & not a vest in sight, so it couldnt have been a 'real' NS event, mind you it was advertised as a Rare Soul event, so should have been crap apparently

re flirtations sound. me and my missus went because we dont listen to what other people reckon anymore because everybody,s tastes are diferent .we have only been going to gigs for one year , but the northern soul scene is very varied nowadays .and we enjoyed the wigan reunion .i think the music and the people will always make it a great atmosphere no-mater where its held ,ive been to much worse places ?? i personally didnt like the music the flirtations sang ,but that sound bite on u-tube in no way does their set justice they sang their hearts out and it sounded great .wish more soul do,s could get that atmosphere

For some of us we don't need a monthly infusion of the 'scene' as you call it, or a debate about newies v oldies or CD v OVO cos we've always thought and felt the same. I went to this,Dave and I'd estimate there were up to 800 in but as Stef said it was hard to estimate cos of the size. The venue worked surprisingly well. If you ignored the shop fronts it was akin to a trendy club. As I don't dance in case I show the rest of you up I can't comment on the dance area but Clare said it was hard on the feet. Maybe Russ needs to think of temporary floor next time.

I was in from 9pm-1am and in 4 hours I only heard 4 records I thought were abysmal.

I can assure you that every other record during that time you've probably had,got or want and the same goes for most collectors.

My only moans are that as others have said there was quite a bit of repitition of certain tracks to the exclusion of others. I don't blame Russ for that but the dj's for not paying attention and whoever played the Etta James wants shooting. Can you imagine playing that R&B dirge at Wigan!! Russ needs to sort that too.

Also for me although the music was all Northern it did span a wide time frame and was not particularly reminiscent of Wigan to me. However I never went in M's so maybe what I considered pre-Wigan tracks were M's hits. No idea.

To be honest I hardly knew anyone and neither did Clare or Bart. But then I never budged outta Wigan record bar and Im guessing this event attracted those who spent their time on the dance floor.

I thought Flirtations were iffy. Started with "We are family" and went downhill but backing tracks they sang to were pretty poor IMO so they were hampered from the start.

Im sure vast majority had an enjoyable night and Im surprised at Russ V. to be such a curmudgeon just because it's not what he prefers.

Yes Steve, but there has been a tendency to single these Wigan revivals out from others. Surely Mecca,Stafford,Cleethorpes,Twisted Wheel revivals are equally divorced from what's happening now.

Hope you had a good time Mate. In fact I hope everyone had a good time. I've not taken part in the debate about the event itself, I just thought the uninformed. ill researched and blindingly ignorant comment about the 'death of soul' deserved a little bit of a 'shake'. Apparently though if you've been on the scene for 40 years in the West Midlands you eventually develop certain powers of clairvoyancy that enable you to foresee it all in full living color. My apologies as I wasn't full aware of these powers until now. Amazing what you can catch....even with no worms eh?

Hope you had a good time Mate. In fact I hope everyone had a good time. I've not taken part in the debate about the event itself, I just thought the uninformed. ill researched and blindingly ignorant comment about the 'death of soul' deserved a little bit of a 'shake'. Apparently though if you've been on the scene for 40 years in the West Midlands you eventually develop certain powers of clairvoyancy that enable you to foresee it all in full living color. My apologies as I wasn't full aware of these powers until now. Amazing what you can catch....even with no worms eh?

As for the others who attended and had their nostalgiafest- if they had a good time there - good for them.

Much as I despise these revival cash ins if people want to go to them, that's up to them -however daft and irrelevant I might think it is to today's northern scene

Yes Steve, but there has been a tendency to single these Wigan revivals out from others. Surely Mecca,Stafford,Cleethorpes,Twisted Wheel revivals are equally divorced from what's happening now.

Fair point but they tend to be "one offs", and feature a selection of the original DJs (I know Wigan had Russ and Steve W - but Russ is not active anywehere on the scene apart from WC revivals). To me there is a whole lot of difference between say the 1999 Mecca reunion one off and this event. But as I say I am not going to rain on the parade of those that enjoyed it. Just hope that a few of them will venture forth with open ears to somewhere like Lifeline. But I somehow doubt it.

I think someone who risks £9k to put an event on isnt "cashing in" theres no guarantee people will turn up

Speaking to Russ looks like its gonna be an annual event and Steve the co promotor knows some lady with about 10 square metres of the origonal floor, might smell a bit burn but there gonna put that down to dance on, wow how cool is that
